The Dalai Lama was enthroned age 5 in Lhasa Tibet in February 1940. Since then there has been 68 years of unelected rule in which the Tibetan (and since 1959 the Tibetan exile community) has had ONE political and religious leader whose decisions can never be questioned.

  1. Interesting to prove a political point of view. But we can’t compare His Hoiness’ work and authority to that of a secular “political” head of state. I would quote a similar example.

The current King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej reigned since 9 June 1946 to present, he is the world’s longest-serving current head of state and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history.

Although King Bhumibol is legally a constitutional monarch, he has made several decisive interventions in Thai politics. He was credited with facilitating Thailand’s transition to democracy in the 1990s. King Bhumibol is revered by many Thais.

Thousands of flag-waving citizens cheered his car’s journey to the ceremonial Grand Palace from Siriraj Hospital, where the king was admitted in September 2009 with a lung inflammation.Shouts of “Long live the king” rang out as he entered the hospital lobby in a motorized wheelchair and headed to board a van, in which Queen Sirikit also sat.

On sidewalks close to the hospital, the crowd was five or six deep, with those immediately along the street kneeling reverentially. Police and soldiers lined the entire route for the 12-minute journey through Bangkok.

The Tibetans view His Holiness as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, hence the “god”ly status. Now, for 2500 years, we have been studying the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni, is it time to change Buddha? Christians, Moslems and Jews have been praying to the same God. Is it time to switch?

  2. There is always the good and bad side of anything. Talking about the leaders of a country like in non Tibetan countries U.S. has 12 Presidents with changes. The U.K. with 13 changes. Between China and Russia there were 13 changes. And 6 Popes in the Catholics. 8 Archbishops in Canterbury. Rules and constituitions can be changed by the individual rulers. But in the case of Tibet the Dalai Lamas who are incarnations of previous Dalai Lamas will have to pass away before the leaders can be changed. The next rebirth will have to be discovered to take over. And also they have to be emanations of Deities or Buddhas. Like the present 14th Dalai Lama is the emanation of Chenresig, the Buddha of Compassion. That is why he is called the God King. In this case whatever the rules the Dalai Lama has set will have to be abided until he pass away.

  3. The last slide really caught my attention – All because of the views of just ONE man. The arguable point is HH Dalai Lama is NOT a man, he is an enlighten being. Although his decision to ban the practice of Shugden since 30 years ago is still a big question mark until today but definitely HH Dalai Lama can not and should not be compared to the ordinary secular leaders in the world. No doubt that HH Dalai Lama had successfully bringing Buddhism to the world especially to the Christian strongholds in the West, his contribution to the Buddhist society is undeniable.

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
