Dalai Lama angrily replies to peaceful nun

Or watch on server | download video (right click & save file)

Dalai Lama’s reaction in this video is quite surprising in that he is angry, with pointing finger and curt. Dalai Lama does not give much chance for the nun to speak nor shows any compassion or care towards this ‘enemy’. No dialogue is allowed regarding the Dorje Shugden ban by the Dalai Lama. Publicly Dalai Lama encourages dialogue, but here it is not allowed.

In the video Dalai Lama says:

This is not a matter of religious freedom. No, no, no, no. I know Buddha’s teachings. I know Lama Tsongkapa’s teachings. This (Dorje Shugden’s practice) is not a religion. This is worship of a spirit. So that is wrong.

During this demonstration a gentle and sincere Buddhist nun asked His Holiness Dalai Lama for dialogue on the Dorje Shugden ban issue and also to request His Holiness to stop speaking against Dorje Shugden practitioners which is creating violence against them. The Dalai Lama was angry, rude and not polite at all which is not the usual media-friendly Dalai Lama we are use to. He was pointing at the nun as he spoke with his index finger. It seems as if he was talking down to the nun. He was in fact very angry when asked to stop the persecution of Dorje Shugden practitioners by the brave nun. Towards the end you will see a Tibetan man telling the nun to stop bluntly.

Tibetans must realize if you want the help of democratic countries like America, you must also accept freedom of speech, religion and the right to protest that comes along with this financial and political support. Protest incidentally within the Tibetan communities against the Dalai Lama is illegal. It is blatantly not allowed. Any policies by the Dalai Lama is seen as divine and no one may contradict or risk ostracizing.

What the Dalai Lama does not understand is he just met President Obama (February 21, 2014) and he is in the United States of America which stands for no discrimination against any religion whether it is ‘spirit’ practice or not. Dalai Lama may wrongly label Dorje Shugden’s practice as spirit worship, but many millions more do not agree and are deeply hurt if not insulted by his ban. He should not desecrate Dorje Shugden’s practice and publicly denounce it especially when he is traveling in democratic countries like the US where religious freedom is part of the constitution.

Dalai Lama has met President Obama in order to rally support for his cause. He needs the support of the American people also. If that is the case, he should not discriminate against any religion whether he himself deems it spirit practice or not. Which it is not. The issue here is not whether Dorje Shugden is a spirit practice, but the right to practice any religion or forms of worship without denouncements from religious leaders like Dalai Lama. He has progressively denounced the practice of Dorje Shugden publicly creating massive schisms, violence and seperations. Also he has incorporated the Dorje Shugden practice within the Tibetan exiled constitution as illegal. If any Tibetans are to practice, then they would be not allowed to use Tibetan institutions such as hospitals, schools, or even get their traveling documents. It is outright religious discrimination. Dalai Lama’s negative view on Dorje Shugden has had a adverse effect on millions which should be stopped now.

Meeting at the White House between President Obama and Dalai Lama on February 21, 2014.

What the Dalai Lama needs to understand is President Obama and all democratic leaders protect their citizens in their rights to free religious worship without discrimination, bias or prejudice. Whether the beliefs are deemed a religion or not does not concern democratic leaders because they respect the rights to worship as enshrined in the constitution.

A puzzling question this picture invites is the Dalai Lama had stated officially he has retired from politics, so why is he still involved with politics and politicians?

To protect millions from the Dalai Lama’s religious persecution the International Shugden Community began its campaign of demonstrations in San Francisco, CA (Saturday, February 22, 2014). They are peacefully requesting Dalai Lama to stop his persecution against Dorje Shugden practitioners and stop insulting their worship of Buddha Dorje Shugden as spirit worship. The Dalai Lama should respect other people’s practices and religious beliefs and their individual freedom to practice.

The protesters represent millions around the world who asks Dalai Lama to stop the persecution against their worship of Dorje Shugden and allow full democratic rights within for these followers of Dorje Shugden within the Tibetan constitution. They are asking Dalai Lama to not persecute against them on the basis of their faith and open for dialogue. Protestors are asking the Dalai lama to accept and allow religious freedom and not condemn any form of worship including Dorje Shugden’s practice.

Protestors for religious freedom in San Francisco

These peaceful protestors bravely represent the millions of Dorje Shugden practitioners around the world who are disappointed and hurt by the denouncements of their faith by Dalai Lama.

This man came from Japan to USA to join in the protests and has a few important questions for Dalai Lama.

Why did the Dalai Lama accept millions in donations from Shoko Asahara? Why does the Dalai Lama not aggressively speak out about the self-immolations in Tibet as he does against Dorje Shugden practitioners?

Dalai Lama and Shoko Asahara

Dalai Lama called Shoko Asahara his good friend. Shoko Asahara donated millions to the Dalai Lama and his causes. These are some of the questions the Japanese protestor had  and the reason he came to protest. Why in the Dalai Lama’s omniscience did he befriend such a person who is incarcerated for hurting hundreds in Japan? Did Dalai Lama’s promotion of Shoko Asahara as a genuine teacher propelled him to fame in Japan allowing him to have the circumstances for the harm?

Ms. Rebecca Gautier

Ms. Rebecca Gautier who is the representative for the International Shugden Community. She spoke clearly and accurately for major news stations covering the event regarding the undemocratic suppression of religious freedom against Dorje Shugden practitioners in Tibet, India, Nepal and worldwide. Dorje Shugden practitioners are not allowed basic rights within the Tibetan exiled communities in India and Nepal simply because of their religious beliefs.

  1. Dalai Lama and Tibetans, please contemplate this well:

Tibetans and Dalai Lama need the help of our Democratic USA. Therefore you have to accept the protests and media coverage against your wrong policies. American govt and the public’s money built up your refugee camps and gave you the opportunity to fight for your country. Your policy against Dorje Shugden is wrong and if there is backlash you should accept it and do something about it. Do not complain and try to divert attention Shugden practitioners want to harm the Dalai Lama. Why? It would be worth their while to actually have Dalai Lama alive and well to remove the ban. Think. If you don’t like protests, media, internet backlash on your policies, stay in India! Or go home to Tibet already.

  2. So what if the Dalai Lama got a bit angry? He wasn’t rude or aggressive, just irritated, and strongly opinionated about a controversial subject. Doesn’t he have a right to be human? A lot of people put this man on an imaginary pedestal —- which he himself rejects —- and then criticize him for “falling” from the pedestal in their mind!
Furthermore, he hasn’t “banned a religion”, or persecuted one. Only governments have the power to do that technically, and the only thing he has done is to exclude those who practice Dorje Shugden from attending his own teachings in the community. Surely he has a perfect legal right to do this, and it in no way infringes on the freedom of Tibetans to practice Dorje Shugden —- which he has explicitly stated (see link below).
I have no opinion as to whether Dorje Shugden is a divisive, chauvinistic, violent sect as he and others claim. In any case, it doesn’t make any difference as far as the ridiculous accusations people are making here, often based on total ignorance of the subject. People should at the very least do a few minutes of elementary research reading Wikipedia on this subject http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorje_Shugden_controversy before commenting here!

  3. Matthew 7:20
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. THe Dali Lama is good

  4. The Dalai Lama should be kind to everyone, even the nun whom approached him and he was displeased immediately and caught on camera. How come Dalai Lama can become angry so easily. Where is the results of his meditation of loving kindness, compassion and altruism. Were they just nice things to talk about to collect the tickets profits to his talks in stadiums? He should set a better example. The nun may be wrong, but she is not considered Chenresig or a Buddhist master is she?

  5. I understand your reaction, because I used to put sages and “masters” on a pedestal also. But real-life encounters with many sages have shown me that this is a dangerous illusion, for sages are human, with human failings. It’s true that we hold them to a higher standard, and I have no problem with that. But they’re still human, and I can’t find anything reprehensible about the Dalai Lama’s behavior. Yes, perhaps he could and should have been more open. He could have mastered his anger. But he didn’t speak insultingly, contemptuously, or rudely to her. What’s the big deal? And why are all these ignorant people who know nothing about the Dorje Shugden controversy getting involved and talking about religious freedom, which as far as I can see is absolutely not the issue?

  6. I agree with HHT Dalai Lama.

From people who had initially joined Dorje Shugden group and left it, it is a cult.

I don’t think in the US people or government view cults as part of religious freedom. The Branch Davidian cult and James Warren Jones cult leader led his followers into a mass suicide, which came to be known as the Jonestown Massacre. These are two cults that are well documented the peoples and governments reaction

The US has religious freedom but not Cult freedom. This is a big difference.

  7. Tenzing Kyitzom Rangwang,

If United States law did not allow freedom of worship, speech and the civil rights, how come the Dorje Shugden groups can protest for their faith?

Obviously it is not a cult and it is allowed by the US Govt.

What is a cult is the cult of the Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama is not allowed to enter many countries in the world.

  8. Tenzing Kyitzom Rangwang, You know nothing of our US laws. You should study up before you talk.

What is a cult or what is not a cult is not the point. In the United States everyone is allowed to worship whatever they like. This is called FREEDOM. Dalai Lama whether he agrees with Shugden or not, should not ban Shugden worship.

You need the help, money, prestige and backing of USA, so you better get on the page and release the ban as it does not make you look good. You all have no country. Why is that? Because you failed and lost our country. Don’t bring your politics and religious fights to USA. Or we will not back you up.

Ku Klux Klan openly dislikes people of color and other religions besides their own, yet they have the right to worship, gather and spread their doctrine. Google them and look them up.

  9. get me an unbiased link to the Dalai Lama’s ban on Shugden practice? Has he warned us against this practice? Yes, but just because someone said that cigarette smoking is injurious to health doesn’t mean that s/he is banning cigarettes, even if it was said by a great person. All the people working tirelessly here at the DS net, could you please post a link to an unbiased site which states that the Dalai Lama has banned the Shugden practice? Thank you.
It shouldn’t be any site with vested interest such as Geshe Kelsang’s NKT, NAGBA, SERPOM, SHARGADEN or this very site.

  10. Leave the Dalai Lama alone, if you listen closely to the video the nun calls him a liar. Most would miss this but calling someone a liar is wrong. The Dalai Lama is entitled to his opinion. He has a hard job being spiritual inspiration to millions of people. He’s the most enlightened person on the planet. Give him a break.

  11. best the dalai lama not talk to shugden practiices.they are welcome to do what they want.Althou its shamful of there disrespect off the dalai lama .people dont look at the dalia lamas actions and being angry.as he has been set up by these other rude people.we need to respect his wisdom which is far above those that are seting a trap to make trouble.Have a look at christians saying there religion is the one.example cathlics etc etc etc.then there is the muslims. And there koran. The origanal koran respect women.then it branches off etc etc etc.look at the exstemists religion in hong kong railstation muslims exstemists.Dont think for one minuet all muslims are like this they are not.I KNOW MANY GOOD RESPECTFULL muslims that condem this kind off thing.QUESTION IS WHO ARE THESE USA BUDESTS THAT DISTRESPECT THE DALAI LAMA?????????

  12. Namaste, I liked your video and am mindful with you right now with all your woes. Free will and love will reign supreme and anger and passion will end the wars in this world xxx

  13. Even the Dalai Lama has the right to be angry and point his finger ! Who told you that he can not ?

  14. A request to all who are disturbed or upset – choose peace, unconditional Love love and compassion for all beings . Its up to us. In our own hearts. In our own being. Bless.

  15. Your so Pity, don’t know about reality of Tibetan Buddhism.

    will don’t do sham-lies works.

His Holiness the Dalai lama is the Everything of Tibet. how much hard work for Tibet and Tibetans.

    have to think carefully.

  16. Maybe, the Shougden is the non-allowable creature like the Satan. Dalai Lama only performed his duty. He might be so angry against all enemies of human goodness.

  17. Hey Baagii,

There is no such thing as Satan ok? We are in the 21st Century. Whatever bad things we do is because we did it ourselves. Satan didn’t make us do it because he does not exist in the biblical sense of the meaning.

Dalai Lama can ‘perform his duty’ but he cannot encourage laws to ban Shugden people from basic fundamental human rights within the Tibetan community.

He does not allow Shugden people to go to school, go to Tibetan hospitals, get their travel documents or remain in their original monasteries. Many civil liberties are stripped due to their Shugden religious beliefs.
Much violence inflicted quietly on Shugden practitioners also.

    Tim

  18. It doesnt surprise me as he preaches peace and eats venison….

  19. This seems to me Communist Propaganda funded by the Chinese
Communist Party and promoted by clueless granola eating foot soldiers.

  20. I practice the protector, and I will never give it up.

His Holiness is a very beneficial in bringing people into the Buddhist teachings, and especially the lamrim, lojong practices of Gelugpa tradition.

If His Holiness said whoever practice the protector is “bad”…. so be it. Dharma is dharma. We just keep on practicing, and nothing can hurt us. All the protest and yelling is not helping anyone. It only hurt Buddhist image in the West, which is quite ignorant (sometime) and easily misunderstand Buddhism

Let’s be honest here…. how many of those protestors know a Tibetan person prosecuted because of the practice? Are they doing it to satisfy their own ego or trying to help someone.

Instead of spending money to create chaos, we can be more productive and actually reach out to anyone that is harmed because of they practice the protector.

  21. Is this the real personality of a Nobel Prize receiver? where is the compassion that Dalai Lama had been conveying all this while? Buddha never teach us to be rude to Sangha, furthermore as head of the Religion who is being worship and followed by millions of followers world wide, his action and rudeness towards the Nun is really shameful to the whole Sangha community!

Now whole of America and the world see the true facets of HHDL, discriminating Dorje Shugden Practitioner! If Dorje Shugden is spirit, then who is Nechung? Nechung is not even enlightened but is being seek for consultation, doesn’t that mean Dalai Lama is worshipping a spirit?

Thank you to the nun who bravely stood up and let our voice be heard in front of Dalai Lama!

  22. 99.99% of the Tibetan people agrees with what the his holiness dalai lama said, so if you guys believe in majority or democratic election then, think twice and his holiness has a heavy/ more than 2/3 of vote in favour of him so dorjee sugden cult should be banned in any shape or form. however, by the his holiness’s grace he has given you a complete freedom to practice what ever you like but never ever to attain his teaching.thats clear.

  23. Dear Tenzing,

I am Tibetan. And 99.99% percent of Tibetans do not agree with the ban on Dorje Shugden.
    Your facts are wrong.

  24. If the Dalai Lama was set up to look bad on this video, he should not fail and look bad. He as a practitioner of compassion should hold his composure well at all times not just in a controlled environment. How can he slip?

This video shows how angry he can be yet he teaches peace and compassion. Since this is the truth of the matter, we cannot believe his hateful and vengeful rhetoric against Dorje Shugden and the illegal ban. It is pure religious discrimination.

  25. Its time now you understand the fact and do not distort facts. At a time when Tibetan Buddhism is flourishing fast in the west most noticibally by the grace of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, the purity of the Tibetan Buddhism is at risk by spread of spirit worshiping which dilutes the purity of the real essence of the buddhism. Many of the western followers new to Tibetan buddhism have no knowledge or little knowledge about Tibetan culture and history are carried away by the misinformation given by few of the Tibetan so call Geche or fake lamas who have vested interest in their motives. These fake lamas and monks are in-hand with the Chinese communist who are bent on defaming His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Government in exile’s efforts and struggle for peaceful salutions to Tibetan nation. We know the Communist China is sponsoring the Tibetan Dolgyal members with money and good lives.
My advice to you is that if you have little knowledge about “Karma” (Leh-Gyu-dre)
Its time to change your mind and be remorseful for your negative actions.

  26. This is one fucking stupid site..bunch of crooks ..stupid asses..

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
