Ven. Zawa Tulku Rinpoche

Zawa Tulku Rinpoche

The previous incarnation of Zawa Rinpoche was born in the Province of Kham in the region of Chating. He became a monk at Gaden Shartse Monastery in Tibet and was guided by his Root Gurus, the previous Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. There, he achieved his Geshe Lharampa Degree. This entailed countless hours of study and debate, passing through the various levels of increasing profundity of Buddhist philosophy and practice. After he had accomplished this superior training, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche sent him back to the Chating area in order to care for the spiritual needs of that community.

Using the meditation house of Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and with his blessings, he began many years of rigorous retreat practice. Having engaged in Nyung-nye and Chabtrul purification countless times over months and years, he developed the power of healing others. Never sleeping very much, only eating meditation pills and devoting himself to the Bodhisattva practices, he helped many recover from various illnesses merely by blowing on them and giving them blessing pills.

Much loved and respected by those who lived in Chating and elsewhere, he stayed within this region of Tibet until he showed impermance at the age of 73, on the eve of the special holy day of Zaga Dawa. At that time, he entered into meditation on the clear light of death and remained in this state for days, the body retaining heat and showing certain signs of accomplishment. At the time of his cremation, many ribus (sacred relics) were discovered. His devoted community, torn by their loss, wished to quickly find his rebirth. But due to conditions in Tibet, this was very difficult.

Ven. Zawa Tulku Lobsang Dorje Tenzin Yarpel – The current incarnation of Zawa Tulku Rinpoche

The people of Chating contacted Gaden Shartse Monastery in India for help. His reincarnation was discovered in India, born of his Mother, Lhamo and his Father, Ngawang.

Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche instructed his Father to send his young son to Gaden Shartse and he gave him the name, Tsering Dorje. Then as a gesul (ordained monk), he received his ordination from the illustrious teacher, Kyabje Zemey Rinpoche and was given the name Jangchub Ngawang by Venerable Lati Rinpoche.

From that time in 1982, being recognized by various Yogis and high Lamas as the incarnation of the previous Geshe Zawa Rinpoche, he started intensely his monastic studies. In 1997 during an elaborate and large ceremony at Gaden Shartse Monastery, he was enthroned and the title bestowed upon him was Zawa Tulku Lobsang Dorje Tenzin Yarpel Rinpoche. He had achieved the highest levels of oral philosophical debate during his final examinations.

Then, in 2001, because of frequent requests from the people of Chating and the monks from Chating monastery, he visited his old homeland in Tibet. There again, an enthronement ceremony was performed by his devoted community of monks and laypeople. This was a happy and melancholy visit for Rinpoche because of his past history and the current conditions in Tibet which had changed so much for his old community of friends and students.

Returning to the world outside of Tibet and at the request of many Dharma centers he has traveled extensively giving teachings, empowerments and constructing sacred sand mandalas.

Following the directions and advice of his teacher, Geshe Tsultrim, he is now residing in Chang Chub Choling, Temple Bouddhiste Tibetain in Montreal, along with his assistant, Gen Lobsang Tashi. As Resident Teacher he has taken in hand the responsibility for temple affairs and has given advice to its members.

  1. The current Zawa Tulku (pictured above)could not stay in Gaden Shartse Monastery anymore as he refused to swear against the practice of Dorje Shugden. So he has enrolled in Shar Gaden Monastery but residing in the United States now.

I pray Zawa Rinpoche lives long and brings immense benefit to many as his previous incarnation.

  2. Zawa Tulku Rinpoche the previous incarnation was a monk of Gaden Shartse Monastery in Tibet. He has two root Gurus Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Zong Rinpoche who guided him in his studies eventually achieving Geshe Lharampa Degree. Zawa Rinpoche was also a healer who heals by blowing. He passed away at 73 years old. After his passing away the people in Chating ask Gaden Shartze Monastery to help look for his reincarnation. Trijang Rinpoche ask the father of a boy to send his son to Gaden Shartze Monastery and given the name of Tsering Dorje. In 1982 Tsering Dorje was recognised as the reincarnation of the previous Geshe Zawa Rinpoche. He went back to his homeland in Chating to visit. Upon returning his Guru Geshe Tsultrim request him to be resident teacher in Chang Chub Choling, Temple Buddhist Temple in Montreal with his assistant Gen Lobsang Tashi.

  3. I knew Zawa Tulku Rinpoche how give me my Dharma Name in 2005.
I know also that at the time that i attend many meditation sessions at the Tibetan Buddhist Center, I had cancer.
I can say now that i am cancer free and i KNOW where it come from…Zawa Tulku Rinpoche.
He is also a wonderful person. We went one time with is assistant see a firework together and did a retreat also…
I will miss him deeply since he live in United states.
I pray for you soul brother.

  4. Biographies of these amazing Lamas give me true inspiration. It is however always sad to know that given the status of the ban that Zawa Rinpoche current incarnation cannot be in Chating to turn the wheel of dharma. I can only imagine how disheartening it is for him not to be able to be in Chating, and more sadness for the Chating community not to have their Teacher with them. I am also sure that they will not be able to go to Canada to receive teachings from Chating. May I pray that the ban be lifted so that communities like Chating be reconnected to their teacher.

  5. The ban on Dorje Shugen practice has done damage on many levels. To think that the current incarnation of Ven. Zawa Tulku Rinpoche cannot be resident at his previous incarnation’s monastery must be devastating for the people of Chating. They who so loved him so much that they went to extent of requesting Gaden Shartse Monastery in India to help in the search for his incarnation. And, there was even and enthronement ceremony for the current incarnation at Chating.

Ven. Zawa Tulku Rinpoche has kept his commitment to his Gurus and have kept his practice of Dorje Shugden and still managed to do great work in helping centers in Canada to grow for the benefit of many. This despite his heavy load of travelling the world giving teachings.

May Ven. Zawa Tulku Rinpoche live long and continue to turn the Wheel of Dharma both in Canada and the rest of the world for the benefit of all sentient beings.

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
