The Dalai Lama Respects Terrorists But Not Shugden Buddhists

On an evening in November 2015, Paris became the scene and target of one of the most brutal attacks against the city in French history. In a succession of deliberate assaults, terrorists from the group known as ISIS (Islamic States of Iraq and Syria) ripped the city apart and threw it into panic and chaos. By the time they finished, over 130 lives had been lost, and over 300 injured. In just one evening, senseless and barbaric suicide bombings and mass shootings in the streets shocked the world.

ISIS proudly claimed responsibility for this barbarity and showed itself to be most wicked when it revealed that the attacks were not in retaliation to any harm that the French had inflicted upon them nor were they part of an ongoing war between ISIS and the French people. ISIS set its destruction upon Paris because it wanted to terrorize the world and instill fear in the hearts of the people and Paris gets them this attention.

ISIS soldiers summarily executing their captives.

This callousness and blatant disregard for human lives has become synonymous with ISIS who regularly publishes disturbing videos showing its fighters punishing, torturing and killing scores of unarmed prisoners and civilians. This is after all the group that has not hesitated to post a video of its militia locking a captured Jordanian pilot in a cage, dousing him in flammable liquid and burning him alive. ISIS’s list of atrocities include selling captured women and young girls as sex slaves, massacring innocent people while they were praying, and throwing gay men off buildings as punishment for their sexual preference. At this time, it would be extremely difficult to find a more sadistic and cruel band of terrorists.

Pope Francis has condemned ISIS’s cowardly act and warned that “the road of violence and hate does not resolve the problems of humanity.” However, even as the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution declaring that all able states should join in the effort to stop this extremist horde of killers from inflicting further harm and terror, ISIS found a friendly voice in the 14th Dalai Lama who ironically has been touted for the last half a century as a man of peace.

The Dalai Lama insisted that the citizen states of the world, including those who have fallen prey to ISIS’s tyranny should listen, understand and have respect for ISIS.

To be sure, the Dalai Lama said in an interview reported on Monday by the Italian daily La Stampa, that the proper response to ISIS’s atrocities which have included beheadings, bombings and tortures is to try to respect them and try to understand them. In essence, the Dalai Lama’s statement endorses ISIS’s agenda of terror and justifies their extreme, cruel and coercive methods as legitimate tactics in negotiations. Not only is this completely insensitive to the thousands who have perished and suffered unnecessarily in the wake of ISIS’s tyranny, it is also an encouragement for ISIS and other terrorist networks to continue in their heinous, baneful and murderous ways.

An ISIS member slitting the throat of a man he captured. The Dalai Lama says acts like this deserve understanding and respect.

This is not the first time the Dalai Lama has stood with very dangerous people and criminal networks. In the past, he had also counted as his friend the shady leader of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, Shoko Asahara whose character and purpose the Dalai Lama had vouched for. The Dalai Lama endorsed the cult as a peaceful group looking to spread greater understanding and social wellbeing. Shoko Asahara’s group would later go on to kill thirteen innocent people and harm thousands in a Tokyo subway by releasing the nerve gas sarin.

What should be worrying to his friends, allies and supporters is how the Dalai Lama has consistently consented to terror being inflicted upon innocent people and oppressors and tyrants using heavy-handed tactics against others to get their way. He said of ISIS, that dialogue with the terror network is the only way and that “one has to listen, to understand and to have respect for the other person and that we have to do it with our heart [and] be compassionate…” If this speech sounds familiar, it is because the Dalai Lama has used and reused these lines for as long as the world has known him since he burst into the limelight. The lines sound very much like what a Buddhist saint might say, except the Dalai Lama doesn’t apply the same counsel he advocates.

The Dalai Lama himself is personally behind one of the most barefaced oppressions of human rights in the 21st century, a charge he denies but which was proven to be true as stories of his religious apartheid against a Buddhist sect began to emerge over twenty years ago. In 1996 the Dalai Lama unexpectedly announced that a Tibetan Buddhist deity the Gelugpas had been propitiating for almost four centuries was henceforth outlawed. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the exile government of the Dalai Lama went on record to demonize the deity and went as far as to criminalize its practice. No logical reason has ever been given for this radical move that is nothing short of a flagrant breach of Shugden Buddhists’ constitutional and human rights which the CTA should be protecting, not infringing since it professes to be a democracy. In a series of appalling moves, the Dalai Lama and his government suggested that all loyal Tibetans and Buddhists should set themselves upon those who practice Dorje Shugden as a mark of their loyalty to the Dalai Lama and hence the Tibetan cause.

To whip up negative sentiments against the Shugden believers, the Dalai Lama arbitrarily declared that Dorje Shugden is a malevolent spirit and its believers, demon worshippers. This is notwithstanding the fact the greatest scholars and spiritual masters of Tibetan Buddhism have historically recognized Dorje Shugden as an enlightened being.

The Dalai Lama preaches tolerance and yet he and his government-in-exile arbitrarily regard those whose religion they oppose as criminals.

There were no dialogues nor discussions for Dorje Shugden practitioners despite in-depth examinations and debates being the traditional method the Gelugpa school resorts to, to settle canonical disputes. To date, tens of thousands of Tibetan Shugden worshippers and up to four million Shugden believers around the world have been affected. Monks who refused to be coerced into damning Dorje Shugden were expelled and in the communities around the world, Shugden believers were shunned, marginalized, taunted and in a number of cases, physically harmed. The Dalai Lama’s illegal religious ban turned the streets in the Tibetan exile towns into scenes more reminiscent of South Africa’s apartheid and America during the segregation years.

For a spiritual leader and a Nobel Peace laureate to malign another person’s faith is delinquent to begin with. But to do so in private and yet presume to lecture others on how to resolve conflicts arising out of differences in culture, creed and religion is offensive, deceptive and makes a mockery of the problem the world now faces with the looming threat of ISIS. The Dalai Lama would have us believe that terrorists and murderers are worthy of respect and understanding, but not peaceful and benevolent Buddhists.

Shugden Buddhists have done nothing wrong or illegal other than to keep their faith for which they are regarded as criminals. In the meantime, those who are clearly criminal such as ISIS are upheld. This incongruity is revealing and says that the Dalai Lama is anything but a ‘simple Buddhist monk’, the tag he carefully cultivated and built a following on. If the Dalai Lama sincerely believes that,

One has to listen, to understand, to have respect for the other person, regardless

and that

there is no other way

and in addition, that

…those who are intolerant harm their own faith…

then his dialogue with Shugden devotees is long overdue, especially now that the Dalai Lama has acknowledged that the intolerance he fostered and spread worldwide for over twenty years has harmed the very religion he is supposed to represent and protect. For the Dalai Lama to refuse to do so puts him at risk of being regarded as disingenuous as he is increasingly being accused of.

  1. What? Why Dalai Lama that you could say to respect and understand ISIS but you can’t bring yourself to say the same for Dorje Shugden practitioners who are your own people? Why do you not try to understand us Shugden practitioners and call of the ban?

The dialogue with us is really long overdue yet we are still hopeful and we respectfully and humbly request for you to show some care towards your own people. After all isn’t religious tolerance, peace and compassion you are advocating here and teaching? The intolerance created due to the ban on Dorje Shugden has spread worldwide and if you or the CTA does not want China to use it against you then why keep the “ban” on Dorje Shugden? When there is no ban then there is nothing anyone can use against Your Holiness/CTA. It’s as simple as that.

What is puzzling and makes no sense is how can a man of “peace”, teaches peace yet does the opposite to His own people? What are we saying… this is the HUGE CONTRADICTION.

So yes why does the ISIS terrorists deserve understanding, to be listened and respected yet not for Dorje Shugden people, who are your own people, who do no harm? WHY? Just because they decide to follow their Guru’s protector practice, are they not worthy of your consideration at all??? Please stop this hypocritical game… it is so obvious.

  2. Oh yes BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR to all Shugden people around the world.. may this year be a year where the BAN on DORJE SHUGDEN be lifted and FINISHED!!!

No matter what obstacles we may face, may we move forward and preserve the pure lineage of the Ganden tradition. We are victorious!

  3. The False Dalai Lama would respect anyone or any organization if he could make the headlines. It’s all just propaganda and the cult of the celebrity.
His PR and media team are working overtime in an attempt to rebuild his credibility after the outrageous sexist comments that made him a laughing stock.

  4. Dalai Lama always metion that dialogue is the way but he never apply it to Dorje Shugden practitoners and encourage sagregation and discrimination on Shugden practitioners. How can that be fair and how can people respect this two faces act?

Siding the terorrist over devoted practitoners is what the Dalai Lama chooses and how can that make sense? Whatever the Dalai Lama preaching does not carry any weight at all and how would the world respect this?

For whatever reason the Dalai Lama want to show respect and understanding to the terrorist that is his choice but Shugden practitioners have done nothing like that and what we are asking is just to continue our practice that given by our guru.

  5. Is truly sad but is the true action by HHDL, Shugdenpas are urge to have a dialogue to solve the unreasonable DS ban in the peace way but yet receive any good news by HHDL hence HHDL think by this way;

“One has to listen, to understand, to have respect for the other person, regardless

    and that

    there is no other way

    and in addition, that

…those who are intolerant harm their own faith…”

We are strongly appreciate to have a peace dialogue soon with HHDL so the lift the DS Ban, may peoples around the world take a look in this matter that cause many suffered by this segregation hence stand out to voice together (with folded hands)

  6. What a wired and “out of planet earth” kind of opinion and suggestion? HHDL said that dialogue with the terror network is the only way and that “one has to listen, to understand and to have respect for the other person”….

Why on earth we need to respect the terrorist and murderers? We need to put all of them in jail so that planet earth will be safe from ISIS. Furthermore why HHDL for the longest time don’t have dialogue with Dorje Shugden practitioners to solve the issues and removing the ban? this is so double standard!

  7. Looking at His Holiness Dalai Lama’s stand in respect of ISIS, it is;

    (i) truly mind boggling that His Holiness Dalai Lama who is supposed to be the epitome of compassion can, without any prompting, voluntarily speak out to plead for tolerance in respect of a group of terrorist who are clearly driven by hate and responsible for punishing, torturing as well as killing scores of unarmed prisoners and civilians but yet blatantly turn a blind eye to the suffering of Dorje Shugden practitioners (which are evidently brought to the attention of His Holiness) who are just seeking to continue with their own dharma practice which does no harm to anyone.

(ii) even harder to reconcile why His Holiness Dalai Lama would so readily and proactively champion understanding and respect for such sadistic group of terrorist but yet not lift a finger in the plight of Dorje Shugden practitioners who are being discriminated and tortured solely due to their religious belief despite His Holiness clearly being in a position to put an end to such discrimination.

Granted, mere mortals like me may not be in a position to understand the workings of the enlightened mind of His Holiness but logic is highly valued even by Lord Buddha Himself and logically, if compassion is the objective, why can’t it be the case where such compassion is demonstrated indiscriminately across the board, for terrorists and dharma practitioners alike? At the end of the day, shouldn’t compassion be geared towards eliminating suffering of ALL sentient beings?

  8. The Islamic State killers really are “Criminals in History”!

  9. I don’t understand something. How come EVERYONE in the world including ISIS is allowed a chance to talk, dialogue and settle things but not Dorje Shugden people? Are Dorje Shugden people so beneath everyone on the planet that they deserve no reconciliation. Is the Dalai Lama saying this about ISIS because it’s the politically right thing to say? But not necessarily ethical?

  10. The Dalai Lama is supporting ISIS is totally illogical. If he supports ISIS to have dialogue then why not the Dorje Shugden people?

  11. From http://www.siasat.com/news/end-terrorism-we-should-follow-path-prophet-pbuh-dalai-lama-895214/

“Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama who is also a Nobel Laureate termed the Holy Quran as a Sacred Book which is a priceless Gift of God given to mankind for guidance and welfare of the entire humanity.

According to Karnataka Muslim, the leader express his views at the grand global meet of Buddhists in Mysore. The spiritual leader also lauded the great services of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the mankind. He said that “The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life is the best example for the entire humanity.”

“We should follow the path shown by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in order to establish global peace and to end terrorism and tyranny from the world. The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) message of Peace, love, justice and religious tolerance will always be a leading light for the whole humanity”, he added.

“Thousands of the followers of Buddhism from around the world thronged the venue for their world congregation at Buddhist Monastery in Bylakuppa”, reports Karnataka Muslim.

The spiritual leader receives a copy of the English translated Quran from CMA District President Mushtaq Ahmad. Dalai Lama received it with reverence.”

  12. Hey guys,
I think you – as many others – miss the point here. I think, it would be good to get the context and to cool down.

Context is a thing sensationalist greedy people or people who think or work superficially usually miss – including journalists. However, context must be taken into consideration if one strives for a fair understanding of a situation or for fair and intelligent judgement.

If you read the origin interview in La Stampa,
    http://www.lastampa.it/2015/12/07/esteri/lastampa-in-english/dalai-lama-we-must-dialogue-with-isis-9wArnTTZdCy1SufxNyzibL/pagina.html
you can learn some things …

    1)
The preface of La Stampe makes clear that His Holiness the Dalai Lama stressed before suggesting dialogue with ISIS that VIOLENCE MUST BE STOPPED! This is in line with what he once said to the New York Times, many years ago:

”Terrorism is the worst kind of violence, so we have to check it, we have to take countermeasures.”

But he emphasized that ”the real antidote” to terrorism in the long run is ”compassion, dialogue — peaceful means” — even with terrorists. ”We have to deal with their motivation,” he said. ”Terrorism comes out of hatred, and also short-sightedness.”

“He likened Osama bin Laden to a butcher who had grown inured to slaughtering animals. With terrorists, the Dalai Lama said, applying a Buddhist analysis, ”their whole mind is dominated by negative emotions.”

See: New York Times „Dalai Lama Says Terror May Need a Violent Reply”, 18. Sept. 2003, http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/18/us/dalai-lama-says-terror-may-need-a-violent-reply.html?src=pm

His stance is also in line with what he said in an interview to Bultrini here: http://info-buddhism.com/Interview_with_HH_the_Dalai_Lama.html There His Holiness discriminates between long term and short term strategies of countering terrorism, fanaticism or violence and the causes of these.

What His Holiness said to a La Stampa journalist was said not only in a certain context you missed to consider but it should be seen also in context of earlier statements he made. This will help to get a better grip onto what he wants to say.

The preface of La Stampa sets the context straight:

“ISIS, the Islamic State terror network. Beyond the immediate priority of ending violence, the Dalai Lama said economic development that respects people and the environment is a powerful antidote to religious fundamentalism.”

And what follows in the interview – which you and some news and enraged social media activists now use to bash the Dalai Lama – is a reply that stressed the long term treatment of the causes why those people are drawn to terrorism. So, His Holiness is speaking about a long term strategy and not what has to be done immediately. And in that context he says the same things as the Buddha would have said or what also experts said. But you cannot see this if you miss the context.

The two opening questions by La Stampa after their preface – again, which clearly states that there is an “immediate priority of ending violence,” – are:

    1)
“LA STAMPA: Your Holiness, you have said that your enemy is defeated when he becomes your friend.”

    2)
“LA STAMPA: Can you explain how to become friends with ISIS?”

So, His Holiness answers those questions which are the Buddhist and also the clever long term response to hatred and enemies.

Tell me as Buddhists please what is wrong with this and if you would prefer to bomb Syria and IS? And how can you extinguish ISIS without producing more violence and civilian victims? In what way is bombing other people who suffer from fundamentalism a method in Buddhism at all? And even in a mundane sense, how can violence against other people have any good result from a long term perspective? Do you remember Shantideva’s teachings? Are you not agreeing with the great saint Shantideva?

“Where would I find enough leather
To cover the entire surface of the earth?
But with leather soles beneath my feet,
It’s as if the whole world has been covered.” – Shantideva

  13. Hi Tenpel,

I think YOU missed the point. The point is, if the Dalai Lama genuinely feels that ultimately ”compassion, dialogue — peaceful means” are the ONLY methods to addressing even the most terrible of criminals and resolving conflicts, how come the same treatment he advocates to be afforded ISIS, are not given to Dorje Shugden practitioner?

Why the double standards? Why say one thing and do another in such an disingenuous way? Why the hypocrisy?

  14. Dear Tenpel aka Tenzin Peljor,

Just consider this carefully. The only difference we have is Dorje Shugden. If CTA/Dalai Lama stops speaking against Dorje Shugden we can all unite and we would be a bigger group. I supported Dalai Lama and donated UNTIL the Dorje Shugden ban. We have no gripes as well as no issues between each other except the Dorje Shugden ban. Remove the ban and we can all unite and be friends. Simple solution to work towards. NO RELIGIOUS LEADER OR secular head of state should ever criticizes or discourage anyone’s spiritual path in the 21st Century. Be democratic and respect Religious Rights.

Tenpel take a good look at these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS6hq5HJNik and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdyIJwVaqZ8
How can the Dalai Lama say these things? How can he want monks who don’t follow expelled and rejoice in it. WHERE IS THE COMPASSION? How can he say his teachers are wrong. If he can say that his own teachers are wrong, they we can say he is wrong.

    Carol

  15. The Dalai Lama I have said many times before is no fool or simpleton, he knows he looks silly wanting to promote dialogue with ISIS and yet sidelining the Dorje Shugden lamas and people who were a big part of his life.

What ISIS had done in a mere short years is a lot compared to Dorje Shugden people in the past 20 years, the difference in the conduct between Dorje Shugden people and ISIS is like the heaven and earth. yet the Dalai Lama continues to destroy his own reputation, think deeper about this.

  16. Hi Janet & all,
I don’t think that I missed the point. The post above distorts the facts and claims wrongly that the Dalai Lama supports the cruel and brutal ideology and actions of ISIS, “In essence, the Dalai Lama’s statement endorses ISIS’s agenda of terror and justifies their extreme, cruel and coercive methods as legitimate tactics in negotiations.”

Having established an untruth the article mixes this untruth with calls for a dialogue whereby it is not clear for what a dialogue would be needed. After a divorce you just peacefully live side by side or in a distance and accept that there has been a divorce. If dialogue is needed (for what and why?) it would also need the willingness of BOTH sides to put themselves in the shoes of the other party. I can’t see that willingness.

    —-

My pov is, it is the freedom of the Dalai Lama to speak and advice against Shugden worship as it is your freedom to praise and practice Shugden. You have this freedom, NKT has this freedom. You have your places and monasteries others have their places and monasteries. No problem. A clear separation was seen as being needed and was decided upon democratically based on the Vinaya via “Stick Referendum”: http://buddhism-controversy-blog.com/2008/08/11/the-stick-referendum-against-buddhist-and-democratic-principles/

It is also the freedom of the monks living in the Gelug monasteries to follow the advice of the Dalai Lama and decide if or if not they want to live with people who practice something they see as a sectarian, harmful spirit practice that creates spiritual obstacles, discord and schism. Even Kyabje Pabongkha and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche described Shugden as a worldly spirit (with broken samayas / vows etc). (At the same time they claimed this harmful spirit kills those who learn from the holy Dharma of other traditions is also an emanation of Manjushri. This is unlikely because the Mahayana texts clearly state that a Bodhisattava learns, upholds, teaches and practices ALL THE DHARMAS there are. Why should Manjushri kill those who follow the Mahayana teachings?)

The Dalai Lama has never been alone in his judgement that the propitiation of Shugden is harmful or a spirit worship. In the Sakya Tradition Shugden was a minor worldly spirit, the late Nyingma head, HH Mindrolling Trichen Rinpoche, said “Shugden is a ghost”, H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche, “We Kagyu followers normally do not mention this name without fear. There is no Shugden practitioner among Kagyu followers. The reason why we fear the one I name just now, is because we believe that he causes obstacles to spiritual practice and brings discord in families and among the community of monks.” There are many such accounts.

You can cling to that practice but you have to learn that others reject it and speak against it.

This is my last comment here. I don’t like these types of manipulations like people posting here under false identities as “Carol” or “Carol McQuirre” to bully or defame others or what the article above does. This has nothing to do with the Dharma.

All the best on your ways,
    T

  17. We as Tibetans do not need to agree or like everything Dalai Lama decides but Dalai Lama must love, protect and make policies for all Tibetans equally. Dalai Lama is a leader and that is his responsibility. Not everyone in America likes President Obama, but Obama must make policies that benefit everyone as he is the leader and he has a special responsibility whether they like him or not. The Dalai Lama should be the same. The Dalai Lama should NEVER make policies against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Ths is wrong. Dorje Shugden is harmful or not is NOT THE POINT. The point is Dalai Lama should never speak against any religion, deity, practice or spiritual tradition. He is wrong to do so. And no one will keep quiet.

The Dalai Lama should call the Shugden people to the table and talk and make peace. Make dialogue. He must make dialogue with Shugden people and make peace. Shugden people are PEOPLE TOO. They deserve respect, freedom and no segregation. Dalai Lama should call Dorje Shugden followers to talk and make peace and find a solution. Dalai Lama always talk about dialogue. So he should make dialogue now.

  18. Dear Tenzin Paljor,

Where does it say in the Vinaya, Sutra and Tantras that one can say one’s guru is wrong? Dalai Lama has said his guru is wrong and all gurus who did this practice is wrong. How can he say that. Why not consider this: Since Dalai Lama said his guru is wrong, then we can say Dalai Lama is wrong.

Dalai Lama should not say this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XdOH6Mu0eg

  19. Dalai Lama hurt so many Tibetain persons. Dalai Laama should stop to speak against Gyalchen Dojre Shugden. Thi s is his guru Kbaybje Trijang Rinnpche protector. he must respect his guru and guru protector.

  20. Dear Tenpel,

Your attempt as disinformation is astounding.

    1. Re Sakya lineage claiming that Dorje Shugden is a ‘minor spirit’. It is well known that the Sakyas enthroned Shugden as one of the triune of Protectors, Gyalpo Sum. The other two in the triumvirate being Tsui Marpo and Dorje Setrab. These two are inarguably enlightened Protectors unless you are saying that Ganden Shartse has as its protector, a minor spirit in Setrab. So why would the Sakya enthrone a minor spirit together with two enlightened Protectors?

In his talk in 1978 the present Dalai Lama retold as a ‘common story’
that a throne-holder of the Sakya tradition developed a connection with
Dorje Shugden. This was the 17th
century Dagchen Dorje Chang Sonam Rinchen. Sakya masters at that time
such as Sakya Dagchen Kunga Lodo and Morchen Dorje
Chang also wrote sadhanas which have been practised within the Sakya
Tradition since then. Dorje Shugden, in particular in the aspect of riding
a black horse, has been a Dharma Protector of the Sakya Tradition from
    that time until now.

Due to the pressure of the Dalai Lama this practice
has now been suppressed within the Sakya. However, according
to one oracle of Dorje Shugden, Kuten Choyang Duldzin, many Sakya
Lamas – including the father of the present Sakya Trizin – relied on Dorje
Shugden and requested advice from the Dorje Shugden oracle, including
advice concerning the present Sakya Trizin.

Many people have stated that they have been present during Shugden pujas
with Sakya Lamas including Sakya Trizin in the Sakya Temple in Mussourie,
India. In Lo, Nepal, they dis (and maybe still do) annual Dorje Shugden dance, and
according to eye-witness accounts Chogye Trichen the Teacher of both Sakya
Rinpoche and the Dalai Lama, offers a khata to the dancer. The eye-witness
account said the abbot of Lo Monastery told him that in Tibet, in Samye,
they used to perform a dance with 32 dancers representing the 32 Deities of the
Dorje Shugden Mandala plus dancers representing Pehar and Tsemara.
But nowadays they only have one dancer.

    The fact is successive Sakya Trinzinz have recognised Dorje Shugden as Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara and even as the Tradition’s own patriach;

    2. You used the analogy of a divorce. Even in a divorce, one has to establish BY LAW the correct grounds of a divorce before one is granted by the courts. This process was never accorded Dorje Shugden practitioners. Shugden Buddhists were simple unceremoniously maligned, discarded and oppressed.

Poor analogy you used and based on your take, Dorje Shugden has been treated like a battered wife who has ben abused for the past two decades.

    3. As for your claim that the monks voted “democratically” to abandon Dorje Shugden, again you mislead readers. The truth is here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=speHPzgtx0I&feature=youtu.be

    4. You named a few lamas of other Traditions disparaging Dorje Shugden as evidence that Shugden is bad. This is the surest signs that there is discrimination against Shugden and it is NOT Shugden followers who are sectarian. Sectarians would have to be those who promote their own lineage and put down the practice of other Traditions such as calling the latter’s protector “a ghost”. I have never heard a Shugden lama insulting the practice, rituals and deities of the other Traditions.

So much of what you write testify to your discrimination and all done in the name of the Dalai Lama.

    Regards,
    J

  21. It seems to me that you have said everything except address why the Dalai Lama has not given the same fair treatment to the Shukdenites as he suggests we should ISIS.

In the end, if terrorist need to be understood and their position respected, regardless of whether you agree with their cause and methods, why not Shukdenites?

  22. Tenpel,

You wrote, “I don’t like these types of manipulations like people posting here under false identities as “Carol” or “Carol McQuirre” to bully or defame others or what the article above does. This has nothing to do with the Dharma”.

And yet I have noticed that you are a frequent participant in the hate site WNTTAS set up for no other reason that to insult and bully Shugden people without anyway for them to defend themselves. You yourself created a blog to slander all things to do with DS even though your try to disguise it as a Buddhist blog.

I think its wise you heed your own words.

  23. Tenzin Peljor,

I wrote to you once and asked why you have made it your career to damage others just because of their religion.

I further asked if its true that:

    1. you are paid by the Dalai Lama’s gov to smear the name of DS;

    2. that you have disrobed twice before and centre hopped. This is important because it goes to your character and trustworthiness;

    3. that you were trained previously by those in what was East Germany to undertake agitprops, a skill which you now utilise in your engagement by the Dalai Lama’s government.

Are these claims true and can you proof that they are not?

    Thank you

  24. I find this is very disturbing that this person Tenpel can say others written as false and untruth and he himself is spreading so many untruths.

There is no freedom whatsoever when monks are forced out from the monasteries. You do have freedom if you’re living in the West but you don’t have such freedom when you’re living in the Tibetan settlements.

There is no freedom whatsoever when Dorje Shugden practitioners are shunned by Tibetans themselves. It is so wrong that people are being rejected on the basis of the religion/god/deity they belief in.

  25. Isn’t it ridiculously to bow down to ISIS?

If a child is holding a machine gun. What would you do? Surrender and let yourself be killed?

  26. @Tempel Tenzin Peljor
Funny that you brought up context because from all your points, it screams very loudly the double standards thats happening with the Dalai Lama’s speech about ISIS.

Why does he talk about having dialogue with ISIS but not once has he ever talked about having dialogue with Shugdenpas? WHY? Come on! Don’t give me all that context rhetoric. In what context is Shugdenpas placed into? Lesser then ISIS? Dalai Lama talks about dialogue with ISIS… are we Shugdenpas not deserving of dialogue as well? Dalai Lama talks about being friends with ISIS…are we are not deserving to be friends with?

I hope you do realize what you are saying or rather what the Dalai Lama is saying when he says that about ISIS and nothing about Shugdenpas.

  27. Dear Tenzin Paljor

In your first comments, you were accusing the writer for missing the point when stating that Dalai Lama encouraged dialog with ISIS. However, I think what the writer meant is, if Dalai Lama encouraged dialog with ISIS who have done so much harm to many people, why Dalai Lama refuses to have dialog with Shugden practitioners. Instead, Dalai Lama continuously encourages his followers to ostracize them.

Dalai Lama has freedom of speech of course, but freedom of speech should be exercised responsibly. Dalai Lama encouraging Shugden monks to be expelled from monasteries should not be taken lightly and it is the evidence of the discrimination. Of course as you said, Shugden monks now have their own monasteries, but it should not be the case in the first place. Shar Gaden and Serpom were formed after the Shugden monks refused to denounce enlightened protector Dorje Shugden.

You said Shugden is a harmful spirit. I have been practicing Dorje Shugden for many years and he has never harm me or anyone that I know. In fact he has helped me a lot and my family. If he is indeed a harmful spirit, how can Dalai Lama’s own Guru, H.H. Trijang Rinpoche strongly encouraged his students to propitiate and rely on this deity? Even Dalai Lama used to practice Shugden. If you do believe that Dalai Lama is an enlightened being, then do you think he was so stupid as to propitiate a harmful spirit? Don’t you think that Dalai Lama may have other intention in denouncing Dorje Shugden? To promote him perhaps because Dalai Lama will not live forever in his human body?

You said other Tibetan Buddhist school such as Sakya and Kagyu also regard Dorje Shugden as a harmful spirit? You got things wrong. Dorje Shugden for hundred of years have been a protector of Sakya lineage. The 16th Karmapa also respected Dorje Shugden and was angry when he saw an image of Dorje Drolo stepping on Dorje Shugden (of course the image was the creation of a Shugden hater).

You said Dorje Shugden brings disharmony and is causing family discord. Think and observe carefully again. It is the ban and the fact that Dalai Lama is encouraging the separation between Dorje Shugden and non Dorje Shugden followers that is causing disharmony and discord.

I hope you think carefully and stop being so bias in this topic.

    Michaela

  28. Out of curiosity, I take a look at Tenzin Peljor’s blogsite. There is no Dharma in it, it is all political stuff riding on the Dalai Lama’s fame, and putting down other lamas whom he disagrees with. Really, we need fewer this kind of “monk”.

I guess that’s how one can attempt to gain fame overnight – becoming a “monk”, riding on someone famous (Dalai Lama), and criticizing other famous lamas to draw attention to yourself.

  29. Oh my goodness who is this Tenpel or is it Tenzin Peljor? Why so many names, so confusing!

I find it funny and strange How is it that a monk can come here to point the finger when there are four are pointing right back? How is it possible that you Tenpel can say such things about the Dalai Lama and agree… ”the real antidote” to terrorism in the long run is ”compassion, dialogue — peaceful means” — even with terrorists. ”We have to deal with their motivation,” he said. ”Terrorism comes out of hatred, and also short-sightedness.” BUT WITHOUT TRYING TO APPLY THIS VERY STATEMENT YOURSELF AND ON TO DORJE SHUGDEN PRACTITIONERS? How hypocritical is that?

There are very good points brought up by people and you should not ignore and avoid it and be honest and answer them/show eviden especially since you are a sangha(?) Otherwise it is very shameful and what you are doing causing schism and lying which brings the Dharma down, no need a any spirits’ help you’re doing a fine job with your kind of action.

So please do answer what all these people have said about you or pointed out to you, before trying to convince anyone to hear/see your POV which has very little weight, quite illogical, make the Dalai Lama look even more bias and sectarian and unjust. You seem like that Tseta monk on Reuters spewing lies and giving wrong information without any evidence.

So let me refresh the points/enquiries here in case you cannot stand by come back and take a read and what’s the latest update here:

    1. you are paid by the Dalai Lama’s gov to smear the name of DS;

    2. that you have disrobed twice before and centre hopped. This is important because it goes to your character and trustworthiness;

    3. that you were trained previously by those in what was East Germany to undertake agitprops, a skill which you now utilise in your engagement by the Dalai Lama’s government.

Are these claims true and can you proof that they are not?

    5. Why the double standards? Why say one thing and do another in such an disingenuous way? Why the hypocrisy?

    6. You said this “You can cling to that practice but you have to learn that others reject it and speak against it.” Is this they kind of tone and manner a sagha should speak about someone else’s religious faith? Would you apply and say these same words towards Muslims, Hindus, Jews? Hey you’re saying you agree even terrorists deserves to be understood and have dialogue but you deny this to Shugden practitioners who do no harm? So it is OKAY to speak against us Shugdenpas is what you are saying, it is okay to condemn and discriminate Shugden people because the Dalai Lama says so? I see… great, you’ve just proved to the world again how unfair and bad the Dalai Lama is.

It also proves to us that you are here with the motivation here is to cause schism and sectarianism and not to find peaceful solution hence everything you have said in regards to supporting the Dalai Lama’s ISIS statement is full of BS and contradiction. Sorry I am not a sucker for whatever you say because your actions speaks louder.

  30. To me, it is a big issue which can be resolved very easily.

As a leader who wants to lead a nation to advance, the leader should give religious freedom for their people. As a leader, by OPENLY talking bad and suppress a religious believe is unheard of. It is like president of USA Obama, who is a practicing Christian, openly oppress Buddhism. Can you imagine that happen? And this is exactly what is happening in CTA now.

It is not about if Dorje Shugden is a Buddha or evil spirit. At least, Dorje Shugden practice didn’t promote violent like ISIS. In fact Dorje Shugden practitioners are nowhere near to what ISIS is doing. If ISIS people deserves “respect” or worthy of dialogue, then going by the same logic, why aren’t Dorje Shugden given the same respect and given the opportunity of dialogue.

All HH Dalai Lama and CTA needs to do, is to issue a statement to stop the suppression and discrimination, and most of the issues will be resolved.

May be it is about time for HH Dalai Lama and CTA to have compassion for all, INCLUDING Dorje Shugden practitioners.

  31. The Dalai Lama sure is inconsistent and confusing. Just looking at the comments here, he says violence needs countermeasures and perhaps even violence and then he turns around and said bit we need to be kind to them.

It’s this kind of inconsistency that has led to the failure of the Tibetan freedom fight. The people wanted independence but the Dalai Lama and his inept administration pushed the Middle Way instead. What’s that when you say you want autonomy and do nothing. This insistence on his way split the people and weakened the Tibetan cause. Countless millions have gone into supporting the Dalai Lama and all for nothing.

I think the Dalai Lama has done a number on the people who believed and trusted him. I see comments by Tenpel and I smell a propaganda so strongly. Shame.

  32. “I think the Dalai Lama has done a number on the people who believed and trusted him. I see comments by Tenpel and I smell a propaganda so strongly. Shame.”-Julia Miles

This conclusion by Julia Miles is being felt more and more by growing number of people. More Tibetans are speaking up and this will increase and not decrease because they are not afraid anymore. The ban against Dorje Shugden must be lifted soon before the Dalai Lama and his administration’s eroding reputation is further damaged. No website by Tenzin Pajlor or the private office of Dalai Lama can repair this erosion. Do something now!

  33. It is just so disgusting for the Dalai Lama to ask others to respect and understand ISIS, yet he is not able to do the same for Dorje Shugden practitioners.

What have Dorje Shugden practitioners done to hurt others? Nothing as compared to what the ISIS members have done. They kill and create havoc to countries just for the sake of creating awareness. What Dorje Shugden practitioners are doing is just fighting for religious freedom so that we are able to practice it freely and not be harmed or judged for our practice.

This ban on our practice has been taking place for a long time, it should come to an end now. It should no longer be the case where practitioners have to live in fear everyday and be separated from their families or friends.

Monasteries should merge back together. This ban got to stop in order for the Tibetans to be together as one once again. Because of this ban, there are so many people suffering, they do not have a government to go to in times of need. Who else can help them if their own governments are not helping. Who can protect them. It is just basic need of security that is not able to be supplied to the Tibetans due to the ban.

If what the ISIS had done is correct and they support it, then why so the Dalai Lama cannot release this ban and understand the pain that Dorje Shugden practitioners are going through?

Only with the ban being lifted, then once again, Tibetans will be able to hold their heads high.

  34. Dear Admin,

This is the best and most authoritative website on Dorje Shugden. The reason is the information is varied, in-depth as well as broad. The biggest plus why you have won me and thousands of others over to this site is because you offer no hate, show no hatred and you are not a hate site. The minute a site starts showing hatred, you attract only one type of crowd and the rest will disperse. This is your secret. Bravo.

I have a request please. Can you make you make your comments section be able to upload pictures and video links also?

    Thanks for all you do.

  35. Such is the power and manipulative nature of media. When you said please try to respect and understand everyone, before you know you are partners in crime with every atrocities ever committed. Man has gone to war and killed in the name of god since as long as god and man existed.

How many have the Catholics killed? How many have the Muslims killed? How many have the Hindus killed? How many have the Jews killed? Let’s condemn them all then. Let’s have no respect for anyone, any religion, any cause. Let’s not try to understand why people become who they become.

You take every opportunity and news about His Holiness the Dalai Lama and twisted into a Dorje Shugden issue? How manipulative is that? You call it facts and truth and sharing of information but how one sentence uttered by His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be become a full blown article, that is manipulation, intentionally adding relevant information to direct the audience towards the conclusion you want them to have. Don’t act holier than thou. I concluded from your article Buddha’s compassion are limited only to the victims of ISIS but does not extend to ISIS. I do not condone what ISIS is doing but I will not stoop so low as to use the ISIS propaganda for my own gain.

  36. From all the comments above it is clear that it takes a lot or almost impossible to remain neutral and logical in the mind when the topic of Dorje Shugden and the Dalai lama pops up !!
As Tempel commented that the Dalai Lama’s statement to support ISIS was taken out of context. In actuality the ” Dalai Lama stressed before suggesting dialogue with ISIS that VIOLENCE MUST BE STOPPED! ” meaning
    a) the Dalai Lama does not support Violence
    b) the Dalai Lama encouraged that a dialogue should take place with the ISIS to help stop the violence.

These are perfect advice ! I totally agree with them because I do not condone violence of any form or shape too !
But logically these advice should be used TO STOP ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE including those imparted on Dorje Shugden practitioners. There should not be double standards.

  37. @Sarah Kays,

This is the exact problem. Dorje Shugden people are not given the same chances as ISIS by Dalai Lama.

See the Dalai Lama asking the monasteries to EXPEL all Shugden practicing monks. Very dictatorship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEZ5e8J7qeE

  38. This unbelievable how can Dalai Lama support ISIS who is so brutal and so inhuman this barbaric action by ISIS is intolerance killing innocent people is unacceptable, how can Dalai Lama as a religious person can support this kind of act, please Dalai Lama stop it and lift the ban

  39. I failed in so many areas of my life. I wasted my relationships. I messed up my spiritual life. I use to practice Dorje Shugden. I was never taught to damage or hurt anyone by doing this practice. But because of my romantic infatuation with one of the monks in our organization I got mixed up and messed up and left. I am regretting it now. I protest and write against NKT because I can’t accept my mistakes. Sometimes I want to get help, sometimes I don’t. I am ashamed. Easier to blame others. Easier to call NKT a cult and lay the fault on them. I wanted to find blame where there was none. I left NKT and now I encourage others to leave. I know I can’t keep doing this because I am so frustrated with my life as I have accomplished nothing. All I have ever done is run and escape. I have to stop all the nasty talk I do and blaming others. But I need help to stop. I need help. I don’t like psycho-analysts and psychologists because what they say hurts. Truth hurts.

  40. It is another political move to control the citizens by their leadership. Divide and conquer. When is the Tibetans are going to realize that they have much voice in the democratic system. This is very sad.

  41. Rebuttal to Dalai Lama’s smearing on Dorje Shugden
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso ‘s book entitled Heart Jewel did not mention the source of citations of the scripture of the past lives of Dorje Shugden.
According to Bhadrakalpika Sutra-also known as The Fortunate Aeons 1002 Buddhas Sutra, describes in detail the 1002 buddhas of the Fortunate Aeons, can be found in the 1st volume of the sutra section of the Tibetan Kangyur.

Thus, those people who are libeling Dorje Shugden, please quickly repent their sins to avoid the snowballing effects of negative karma, which is equivalent to libeling a Buddha, ignorance may be bliss but not for long.

  43. Not surprising he takes this position, After all the the Dalia Lamas ruled Tibet in exactly the same way. Even the Nazis SS were impressed with how the 1% of Tibet treated the masses.
    http://chinatibet.people.com.cn/96112/99691/index.html

  44. What happened the Chinese funded thuggish group?

  45. Yet another example of travesty manifested by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. One has to wonder what this Leela (divine play) is all about. But one thing for certain is that His Holiness’s comment regarding ISIS is utterly and undeniably wrong on all accounts. Even within Buddhist standards, yes those practicing must come to understand those causing harm and then try to help them overcome this destructive behaviour, but in no way should they be respected for their despicable behaviour. There are many examples with Buddhist cosmology in which the Buddhas manifested in ferocious forms in order to save the minds of harmful beings by slaying their physical forms. ISIS behaviour is reminiscent of the Nazi regime which killed millions, and the way they continue their tyranny in the Middle East, I am sure would do so on a much larger scale if they had the means to. They are the modern epitome of barbarism.

This is another example of how the Gyalwa Rinpoche is manifesting such unbecoming behaviour and has brought into question his integrity as a spokesperson for compassion and peace on a worldwide stage. If he can say to respect ISIS, they it brings into question his current stance on the practice of Dorje Shugden and the injust active discrimination perpetrated by the Tibetan Administration. Such action and words do not portray the great being that Gyalwa Rinpoche is supposed to be.

  46. This is sad. No matter what context the Dalai Lama’s statement is about ISIS, it still does not explain why the Dalai Lama does not extend the same sort of compassion and care towards Shugden lamas and practitioners. What is it that makes us so deplorable and way below ISIS? That’s the meaning of this article I feel. It’s just too bad that the followers of the Dalai Lama not see this and start being civil and cordial with Shugden lamas, monks and lay practitioners.

  47. Dear DS.com

I find it amazing that Dalai Lama encouraged the world to respect ISIS, especially after the cruelty that ISIS did to the world. Nothing about ISIS is worthy of respect. They killed and tortured people and when people do not agree with their philosophy, they do not hesitate to reprimand them. But what ISIS did and is doing so far is similar to what CTA did to Shugden followers. They reprimand them for practicing their faith although the level of cruelty is much lower than ISIS. Maybe that is the reason why Dalai Lama encouraged his follower to respect ISIS – because his government in exile is operating based on similar concept.

    Michaela

  48. This is not the first time the Dalai Lama is caught dabbling with other people’s affairs. His Holiness did the same thing with the unrest in Burma. It is hypocritical when you point fingers when you have skeletons in your own closet. This is especially so when you are a world personality. This shows the disregard his Holiness shows the world.

Being tolerant and understanding is a virtuous practice but this must be practiced with wisdom and equinimity.

  49. This post shows clearly the two sides of the Dalai Lama which do not match together. It is one thing what ISIS does and to advocate that we should listen to them and respect them is difficult as they have no respect for others and kill innocent people without remorse.

Yet, knowing that the Dalai Lama does not show the same view about his own Tibetan people and that he is not interested to listen to them or show any kind of respect as he even forbids them to live a normal social, religious and healthy and even family life, makes his sharing about ISIS a farce.

And it is not only in this extreme case with ISIS but with all the teachings about compassion, tolerance and loving-kindness from the Dalai Lama is only mere words without appliance in relation to Dorje Shugden practitioners. How deeply disappointing!

I wish this ban comes down immediately so that Tibetan Buddhism is again a practice in accordance to its teachings.

  50. Religions and states/republics are allways in conflict because they are dualistic systems.

Duality is because of ignoring the non-duality or reality itself like freedom of lastingness and non-existence, interdependence, cause and effect, essence and nature of conciousness- and space continuum.

Out of this duality arises eternalism and nihilism, that are wrong views because everything is impermanent and not not-existing and so on.

This duality causes good and bad, good and devil and so on, it is each other effects the other like if you create good thereby you also create bad, if you create luck you also create pain, if you create rich you create poor and so on.

When you look at conciousness or space there is a movement aspekt and a stillness aspekt and out of ignoring this the conciousness mistakes this as bad and good, devil and god.

But there is no god and no devil at all.

You can eat bananas as much as you want but you never can become a banana, you can do good things or bad things but your conciousness itself never can become good or bad – there is just good and bad karma that is not your conciousness itself.

So all dualistic systems like religions, states/republics are dualistic systems that are in conflict with reality itself and each other. Each aspekt of duality ceates the other aspekt of this duality like kapitalsm creates socialism and socialism creates kapitalism and so on. But there is only our inherent dignity that is free of all extremes und duality.

So if mankind really wants freedom and wellbeing, instead of duality like peace and war, luck and pain with all the suffering and frustration again and again, you have to realize that basic freedom of lastingness and non-existence, interdependence, law of cause and effect, essence and nature of conciousness- and spacecontinuum that is non-duality and the one and only kingdom, law and government that rules all beings.

So religion, states/republics are all kindergarden systems that ignore that they are all living in this one and only Kingdom of space with the law and government of space. They create their own systems and only end up in this trouble of these systems.

To create religion, states/republic is black magic and will lead to suffering as we clearly can see in this realm and the history of this realm until today.

So if you like to effect freedom and wellbeing for yourself than you wil have to recognize your inherent dignity and wil have to use your own wisdom and compassion to liberate yourself.

If you like luck and pain with all the suffering and frustration, well then you will have to ignore the reality, the one and only kingdom, law and government of space and make you own thing with all the problems, frustration and suffering for you.

Nobody can replace the one and only king and queen of the kingdom space, nothing can replace the one and only law of space that is cause and effect, nothing can manipulate or destroy the one and only world order and government of space. To try this is black magic or what christianity is calling satanism and will effect problems, frustration and suffering like we can see in this realm.

So all religions, states/republics are black magic. The truth hurts … but you betray yourself by this dualistic nonsence.

You all have failed and will fail, look at history of mankind until our present!

The immunesystem of space, elements and nature will destroy this dualistic kindergarden anyway, you can’t escape the one and only absolute truth and limitless force and power of space itself.

So decide on your own what you really want. If you want suffering then go on if not well then accept the one and only world order and government of space.

ISIS will fail and also USA and all other states/republics and religions. They all will fail but space and the kingdom of space with the law and givernment of space will stay.

So decide on your own if you want to live in freedom and wellbeing of this kingdom of space or fail.

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
