A Contradiction or A Bigger Picture?

For the past two decades, the Dalai Lama has issued a controversial ban on the practice of the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. However, the basis of this ban is rife with contradictions.

The Dalai Lama emphasises the importance of keeping the teacher-disciple relationship pure and having sincere reliance on a spiritual guide. But now, he goes against his own kind teachers by proclaiming that their practice of Dorje Shugden was “wrong”. Does this mean all the other teachings and practices he has received from them and is now sharing with the world are also “wrong”?

The Dalai Lama has publicly denounced Dorje Shugden’s practice and forbids any Shugden practitioners from attending his teachings. At the same time, he has given HH Trijang Rinpoche, the current incarnation of his spiritual guide, an exception to do this practice. Why would he allow his own teacher to practice something “wrong”?

The Dalai Lama has claimed that this deity is an evil spirit who will harm his life. Yet, according to the Abbot-Emeritus of Sera Monastery, who consulted Dorje Shugden via an Oracle, Dorje Shugden saved the Dalai Lama’s life by advising him to leave Tibet in 1959 and showing him the way to safety. Is that the action of an evil spirit?

Is the Dalai Lama deliberately being contradictory or is there a bigger picture to this ban?

  1. The problem is, whenever there is an issue, we tend to take sides and condemn others who do not agree with us. They become the enemy. This is contradictory to the teachings of the Buddha who teaches equanimity. Aversion is one of the unbalanced attitudes which are the main obstacles to developing compassion and bodhicitta. If we cherish all beings equally, we will find inner peace and happiness. Inner peace leads to world peace. There is a teaching behind the “contradictions” because they are so illogical. I prefer to believe that there is a bigger picture which will be revealed when the time is right.

  2. The good news is that the 14th Dalai Lama announced in the international press lately he will step down soon and retired from the spiritual world. He added that up to his people to choose whether to continue the D.Lama lineage or not. Well long live DS and we patiently waiting for the King’s return.

  3. All Bodhisattvas work, from their ‘ground’ of ultimate bodhicitta, for the ultimate benefit and happiness of of all beings(and their ultimate enlightenment) through the growth and spread of Dharma. The methods they employ to realize this objective, though, may be ‘confusing’ to the ordinary minds of beings, like us, who perceive only the relative ‘illusory’ view of reality and take ‘appearances’ to be ‘truths’. Hence what we may see, as real, may not be the absolute reality, especially when in times of great need and in times of degeneration, Bodhisattvas may have to practice ‘crazy wisdom’.
My view of the bigger picture is that the Dalai Lama and Protector Dorje Shugden are working hand in hand to ensure the spread of dharma to all, regardless of what we see as conflict and great schism between the pro-Dalai Lama camp and the pro-Shugden camp, regardless of the tales and reports of great violence and abuse inflicted on each other.
A ‘key player’ in this seeming dilemma and conflict is the protector Nechung. If we go back in history to the time when Dorje Shugden first arose as an uncommon protector(and how he arose as one), we see that it was Nechung who had earlier requested Lord Duldzin to make a promise to protect Nargajuna’s precious teachings on the Middle View as taught by Lama Tsongkhapa. It was also Nechung who later reminded Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen( Lord Duldzin’s reincarnation) about this promise and asked him if he would honor it, by arising as an uncommon protector. When Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen agreed, Nechung then created the ‘conditions’(situations) for him to arise as a wrathful protector. He did this by arousing the hatred and jealousy of the Fifth Dalai Lama’s attendants and those around him, against Tulku Gyeltsen whom Nechung had ’caused ‘ to be so popular as to overshadow the Great Fifth. So these people plotted and finally succeeded in assassinating Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen, causing him to arise as a wrathful protector by stuffing a khata down his throat.
Now, in this age, Nechung is the trusted advisor to the Dalai Lama.Could he have intervened once again and advised that the Dorje Shugden practice be banned and then creating the conditions for the great schism between pro-Dalai Lama and Pro-Shugden camps?
This current wave of hostility and violence seem to mirror the hostility and violent reaction of attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama towards the great popularity of Tulku Dragpa Gyeltsen that culminated in his assassination and subsequent arising of Dorje Shugden as an uncommon Protector.
And now, Dorje Shugden practice and worship is spreading in China, Taiwan and areas outside Tibet in an unstoppable fasion.
Can this be the result of the ‘crazy wisodm’ methods of compassionate Bodhisattvas to ensure the growth and spread of Dharma, particularly Tsongkhapa’s teachings on Nargajuna’s Middle View?

  4. Dalai Lama is always stressing on strong bond of Guru Devotion between a Guru and student. Then why does he have to say what Trijang Rinpoche is practicing is wrong. Trijang Rinpoche is supposed to be Dalai Lama’s Guru. Dalai Lama should have followed what Trijang Rinpoche do, that is to practice Dorje Shugden and not banning it. On the other hand when you think deeper actually Dalai Lama has not broken his Samaya with his Guru by allowing the young reincarnation the freedom to practice Dorje Shugden. Thus he still keeps his Guru Devotion and Samaya with Trijang Rinpoche. Indirectly I think Dalai Lama believes that it was Dorje Shugden who has saved his life through an Oracle. There must be a bigger picture to this. We will wait for the rise of Dorje Shugden soon.

  5. The bigger the rise, the bigger the fall.

  6. Many are asked/demanded by Dalai Lama to give up their practice of Dorje Shugden. Dalai Lama also said those gurus of the past who taught Dorje Shugden was wrong? If that is the case, then after Dalai Lama is no more, the next generation of lamas can say the Dalai Lama was wrong too? Or can we say that now?

  7. Swiss and the kind masters.

  8. There are those who believe Dalai Lama is enlightened and a much larger group in the world that do not. So for those who do not, Dalai Lama should not ban the practice of Dorje Shugden as it makes him look tyrannical and undemocratic. Visualize Obama, Thatcher, Gandhi and their likes all banning one form of religious worship in their respective countries. How would that look? If it does not look good for them, it will not look good for Dalai Lama.

  9. Dalai lama gave his reasons for forbidding the worship of DS and the choice of whether to worship or not was completely decided by each individual. If he does not want DS worhsippers to attend his teachings then its his choice. We the non believers of DS donot want to be acknowldeged by DS believers. So, why is it that the DS worhsippers wants to be acknowledged by HH and other non-believers. You practice what you believe and we will practice what we believe, what is the need for all the commotion. My family has never been a worshipper of DS and they always taught me to have an open mind to all possible reasoning and beliefs. I don’t favor nor have harsh feelings or hatred towards DS worhsippers. Its only annoying when they try to blow out an issue that can be resolved if both sides decides not to interfere in each others life and beliefs.
Thanks for the brief history of DS. I bet there is more to it than was in the video and looking forward to either this or some other website to shed light on more of this. I prefer listening to both sides. And this showed just one side of the coin .
Thank you once again and have a nice day!

  10. I love Dalai Lama.
What he does for humanity is extraordinary!
I don’t care about this kind of political games.

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
