Angry Spirit

By: TIM McGIRK Once a month, a joyful procession of Tibetan refugees – many of them disfigured by frostbite suffered while escaping their homeland over the Himalayas – files into the Dalai Lama’s exile palace at the Indian hill station of Dharamsala. For these visitors, His Holiness is an emanation of the Compassionate Buddha, and his…

Are Dalai Lama’s critics backed by China?

It has been 12 years since I first heard Dorje Shugden’s name. Under normal circumstances it’s best not to talk about protectors openly. This is because the sanctity and potency of the protectors would be compromised, and you don’t really want their assistance to wane. Best kept in silence, they serve as fuel on the…

The Deity Banned by Dalai Lama

I am a Dutch student of Kundeling Rinpoche, one of the Dalai Lama’s major critics in the Gelugpa tradition. I’ll try to give an explanation of the Dorje Shugden controversy that is both understandable for those who are not initiated in the Mahayana-Vajrayana Buddhist tradition and still explains the very crux of the problem. When…

Canonicity and Divine Interference: The Tulkus and the Shugden-Controversy

Michael von Brück Centre for Religious Studies Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich Religions are systems of social communication which at the same time create images of reality which become normative structures of perception, and these in turn define what is considered ‘real’ in a given society. Proof of the bigger picture – Chinese demanded monks to worship Shugden

It has always been dorjeshugden.com’s firm stand that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is purposely creating the ban on Dorje Shugden with a bigger picture at the back of His mind, which is actually to promote Dorje Shugden, especially in the Chinese world, where a renaissance of Buddhism is expected to happen. Good Faith, Bad Faith

While watching the Dalai Lama on YouTube the other day I was struck by a strange sensation. I was bored. Now don’t get me wrong. I like this ‘simple monk’ as Tenzin Gyatso likes to call himself. I had a long private audience with him years ago in Dharamsala that left me flying high for…

The Dalai Lama: “Shugden practitioners: you’re not welcome”

We recently received another sad proclamation from the Dalai Lama, who regularly makes an issue of the practice of Dorje Shugden in his public teachings, and encourages his followers to stop this venerable, traditional Dharma practice. Why Dorje Shugden Practitioners are not Isolationist – Part 2

Isolationism was intensified in 2008, when the Dalai Lama started a new phase of persecution against Shugden practitioners. Whilst ostensibly on a religious visit to Drepung Loseling monastery in South India, instead he instigated a political referendum on whether the monastery wanted Shugden monks to remain in their ranks. He forced the monks to vote…

Why Dorje Shugden Practitioners are not Isolationist – Part 1

Some people criticize Dorje Shugden practitioners for being ‘isolationist’ or ‘sectarian’, but it’s important to understand why these perceptions have come about because it may appear that ‘Shugdenpas’ have deliberately decided to separate from Tibetan society or Tibetan Buddhism as taught by the Dalai Lama. However, as is explained, this is not the case. The…

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
