UPDATED: Penpa Tsering Defames Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche

The Speaker of Parliament is an important position and it is the Speaker’s duty to interpret parliamentary rules impartially, maintain order, and to defend the rights and privileges of members of parliament, including the right to freedom of speech. Most importantly, the Speaker’s actions must be impartial and his first duty is to moderate debates so that all voices of the people’s representatives are fairly heard.

But this is not a role that Penpa Tsering, the Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile respects and honors. In a speech to students of Upper TCV School on 4 June 2014, Penpa Tsering openly abused his position of influence and showed the world the CTA’s true colors.

In a speech filled with lies and distortions of history, the Speaker attacked Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo, one of the most respected high lamas of Tibetan Buddhism and no doubt one of the greatest Gelugpa Lamas of the past century. Not only is Pabongka Rinpoche the root Guru of virtually all Gelugpa masters in modern times, he is also the source of Dharma for both the 14th Dalai Lama’s principal teachers, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Ling Rinpoche. Therefore, almost all the present Dalai Lama’s Dharma knowledge flows from Pabongka Rinpoche and yet all these meant nothing to Penpa Tsering.

In an environment that is already highly sensitive and on an issue that has divided the Tibetan people, Penpa Tsering referred to Dorje Shugden as the devil and denigrated Pabongka Rinpoche in a most offensive way. This must be the first time that an elected politician (in what is supposedly a democracy) maligns a Buddha and one of its holiest saints in such a terrible way and thinks nothing of it.

Amongst other false accusations, the Speaker inferred that Pabongka Rinpoche was under the influence of the devil and created the Shugden practice to serve its own evil intentions. Not only is it wrong for an ordinary person to judge and insult a highly respected lama who has done much for Tibetan Buddhism, it is worse that a politician tries to influence the minds of young Tibetans on a contentious religious issue with blatant lies.

The CTA has always denied that they have imposed a religious ban on the Shugden practice because to admit so would mean they admit to an unlawful breach of human rights. Instead, they claim that the Dalai Lama has merely advised people against the practice. If that is true, and since the spiritual leader of the people has already given his opinion, why would the Speaker involve himself in trying to turn the minds of young Tibetans against a religious practice, especially since he is not a spiritual figure and does not have any spiritual authority to do so? Why did the Speaker not use this precious time and opportunity with the future generation of the Tibetan people to encourage them in their harmonious and democratic endeavours? Why did the Speaker instead abuse his power to tell lies and twist facts? Some of the lies are so base it is an insult to the intelligence of the young Tibetans.

The Guru of all Gurus, Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo (1878 – 1941)

For instance, Penpa Tsering claimed that Dorje Shugden “sogtae” (life entrustment) means giving one’s life to the spirit and that before Pabongka Rinpoche, there was no history of sogtae whatsoever. Either Penpa Tsering is totally ignorant of a subject that he was lecturing the Tibetan students on, or he meant to brainwash them with gross deception.

Dorje Shugden sogtae is a commitment rite for a practitioner to follow Je Tsongkapa’s teachings all the way till enlightenment and to trust Dorje Shugden as the principle protector until the practitioner gains Bodhicitta. Life entrustment rituals existed much earlier on before Pabongka Rinpoche’s time.

For example, in the 17th century, life entrustment rituals of the protector Dorje Barwa were conducted by the Fifth Dalai Lama. Similar life entrustment rituals for Nechung, an unenlightened spirit who is the Tibetan state’s protector, can be found in the collected works of Thuken Dharmavajra (1737-1802). There are many other such examples [See Note 1]. The Dalai Lama himself has given teachings on life entrustments of the ‘Five Great Kings’ (Nechung).

Therefore it is utterly dishonest for Penpa Tsering to distort facts on a spiritual matter that he should abstain from commenting on as a politician. But it does show the extent to which the CTA will go to trick the Tibetan people into supporting an unholy and illegal ban they are now desperate to defend.

The Speaker went on to say that with sogtae, the practitioner risks not taking a good rebirth and instead becomes a wandering spirit that moves around ‘Dolgyal’ Shugden. So how does Penpa Tsering explain the return of acclaimed Shugden masters like Pabongka Choktrul Rinpoche, Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche, Zemey Choktrul Rinpoche, Domo Geshe Rinpoche, Lama Osel (Lama Yeshe’s reincarnation), and many more? And for that matter, it would also mean that Lama Zopa would become a wandering spirit since he took Dorje Shugden sogtae from Trijang Rinpoche.

There are also many contradictions in Penpa Tsering’s statements. On the one hand, he referred to Pabongka Rinpoche as a great Lamrim master, so great that the 13th Dalai Lama would send Pabongka Rinpoche to teach the Lamrim instead of the Ganden Tripa (head of the Gelugpa lineage with perfect mastery of the Sutras and Tantras). On the other hand, Penpa Tsering accused Pabongka Rinpoche of being under the influence of the devil Shugden and doing the devil’s work. Why would a lama who is under the devil’s power spread great dharma teachings like the Lamrim which Pabongka Rinpoche was famous for? That Pabongka Rinpoche did so much to spread Je Tsongkapa’s teachings is proof that Dorje Shugden is not an evil spirit but the Protector of Tsongkapa’s teachings. Additionally, in insulting Pabongka Rinpoche in such a terrible way, Penpa Tsering was actually saying that the 13th Dalai Lama had no clairvoyance at all to detect a devil worshipper.

And to inflame the young listeners, the Speaker accused Pabongka Rinpoche of attempting to eradicate Nyingma teachings and even destroying statues of Guru Rinpoche and burning Nyingma monasteries. This statement by Penpa Tsering is malicious, dangerous and an outright lie and it is easily proven. When the regency of the 14th Dalai Lama was offered to Pabongka Rinpoche, he declined. Surely if Pabongka Rinpoche had intentions of destroying the Nyingma or any other traditions as Penpa Tsering claimed, then being the Regent would give him the political power to do so and yet Pabongka Rinpoche refused the opportunity. On the contrary Pabongkha Rinpoche regarded it as malpractice of Dharma even to disparage the teachings of other lineages, and wrote in the Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, Phabongkha wrote:

Abandoning Dharma is, in the final analysis, disparaging the Hinayana because of the Mahayana; favoring the Hinayana on account of the Mahayana; playing off sutra against tantra; playing off the four classes of the tantras against each other; favouring one of the Tibetan schools—the Sakya, Gelug, Kagyu, or Nyingma—and disparaging the rest; and so on. In other words, we abandon Dharma any time we favor our own tenets and disparage the rest.

Not only did Penpa Tsering fail to acknowledge the purity of Pabongka Rinpoche as a spiritual master, he instead poisoned the reputation of one of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism.

Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, the 14th Dalai Lama, and the Speaker of Parliament Penpa Tsering. Lobsang Sangay agreed to Tibet being under communist rule, the Dalai Lama is accused of being a dishonest despot worldwide and Penpa Tsering shows contempt for high Tibetan lamas and penchant for untruths

Penpa Tsering did not limit his offense to Pabongka Rinpoche. In his speech, he also commented on masters of the Sakya lineage, the 9th Panchen Lama and also Trijang Rinpoche, unashamedly claiming that the present Trijang Rinpoche is living in miserable conditions due to his Dorje Shugden practice. It is shocking that Penpa Tsering did not see anything wrong in passing derogatory comments about the Guru of the present Dalai Lama, and it will be interesting to see if the Dalai Lama will censure the Speaker for such rudeness or whether the Dalai Lama will allow a precedent that ordinary people can insult high lamas without any recourse.

If the Dalai Lama has made an exception for Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche to continue in his worship of Dorje Shugden, then who is Penpa Tsering to comment on it? If there is any truth in the allegation that Dorje Shugden is a demonic force, it would also mean that the Dalai Lama has no compassion in letting the reincarnation of his holy Guru to continue in a practice that would be harmful to practitioners as the accusations go.

It is amazing that an ordinary man such as Penpa Tsering would not hesitate to pass judgement on so many great Tibetan masters. It shows that the Speaker places himself above all these high lamas even though he has no spiritual authority and obviously even less spiritual knowledge.

In the Speaker’s comments on the Sakya lineage, whether he intended it or not, Penpa Tsering actually let slip the CTA’s interference in religious matters and forcing their decisions on Sakya Gongma Rinpoche to abandon Dorje Shugden. The Speaker acknowledged that it was only in 1996 after a chitue meeting (Parliament meeting) that the Sakya lineage stopped their propitiation of Dorje Shugden. By right, such decisions would be made amongst the leadership of the Sakya lineage who have practiced Shugden for hundreds of years, and not suddenly after a parliament meeting. Clearly the Sakyas were forced just as the CTA has been forcing Gelugpa lamas to part with this ancient practice.

The Speaker in his speech did not hesitate to demote Dorje Shugden, a protector the Sakya clan regarded as Avalokisteshvara (Khri chen Drag shul ‘Phrin las rin chen. Rdo rje ‘chang drag shul ‘phrin las rin chen gyi rtogs brjod [The Autobiography of Khri-chen Drag-shul-phrin-las-rin-chen of Sakya). Dehra Dun: Sakya Centre: 1974, pp. 29-31] Note 2) to the lowest level protector. At least he did not accuse the highest lamas in the Sakya lineage to have worshipped the devil as he accused Pabongka Rinpoche of, although it is the same deity he was referring to. This is how much respect the CTA has for the feelings of not only the Gelugpa Shugdenpas but also for anyone who has been forced to give up their religious practice.

Penpa Tsering’s speech to the young Tibetans is clear proof:

  1. That the CTA has no respect for even the most distinguished high lamas and masters such that an ordinary man like Penpa Tsering feels no shame in defaming a highly attained and respected master like Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche;
  2. That the CTA does actively interfere in religious matters even though they have no authority over spiritual affairs other than to preserve and promote the rich Tibetan spiritual culture. In fact it would be even more accurate to say that the CTA manipulates religion for their own gain and does not hesitate to destroy the truth along the way. How are they better off than the Chinese they condemn?
  3. That the Dorje Shugden ban is not based on scriptural facts and evidence but on lies that the CTA manufacture and impose as justification, by force. Since 1996, the CTA and representatives of the Dalai Lama have insisted that they have done ‘extensive research’ and discovered Dorje Shugden to be a malicious demon. With the Tibetan people and the Gelugpa community worldwide divided, the CTA must now produce evidence of their so-called extensive research that over three centuries of Buddhist masters have missed. If indeed there is any proof of Dorje Shugden’s demonic nature, why don’t they produce it instead of defiling the good name of a high Gelugpa lama who entered clear light over half a century before the Shugden ban?;
  4. That prominent politicians within the CTA such as Sikyong Lobsang Sangay and now the Speaker Penpa Tsering would stoop so low as to tell blatant lies to young Tibetans, and destroy the authenticity of Tibetan history. If this is the top level of the leadership, what does it say about the rest of the CTA? What does it say about the Dalai Lama who endorsed them? How can anyone trust them?
  5. That the CTA is two-faced; they object to protests and accusations against the Dalai Lama on the basis that it is disrespectful and yet the CTA themselves engage in hurting the feelings of religious practitioners by insulting past and present high masters;
  6. That the CTA is a dishonest and disrespectful government who at first denied that they persecute Shugden monks and lay practitioners but is now openly antagonistic towards the practitioners not sparing even past masters who have entered clear light after doing so much for the Tibetan people.

How can this government be trusted to lead the Tibetan people into the future? Instead of focusing on efforts to re-establish cordial relations with China so that independent or autonomy discussions can proceed, instead of busying themselves on how to progress the well-being of the Tibetan people in exile, instead of cultivating harmony amongst the Tibetan people, the CTA and politicians like Penpa Tsering engage in deception of their own people and blatant acts of contempt for high lamas who have preserved the Buddha’s teachings and made it synonymous with the Tibetan people. And along the way completely distort facts and history.

How can people of the world respect the Tibetan community and the Tibetan Buddhist religion when they see leaders such as Penpa Tsering putting down lineage masters like Pabongka Rinpoche whose reputation has been held in high esteem until now when it is sullied by a morally and spiritually corrupt politician?

Penpa Tsering’s behaviour shows that the CTA is getting increasingly desperate as more and more truths about their human rights abuse surface. When at first they denied that a religious ban existed, they now resort to outright lies and more lies to cover their dishonesty. Penpa Tsering’s insolence towards some of the most beloved high lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition has hurt many Tibetans and infuriated them, not to mention carrying the potential for an angry response by the public. It is only by the counsel of Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche that hurt feelings did not give rise to flared tempers and action by the community in general, regardless of which side of the Shugden issue they stand on.

Prior to delivering his inflammatory remarks about Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche, and referring to Dorje Shugden as the devil, Tibetan Speaker of Parliament Penpa Tsering had already put his foot in his mouth with a series of lies about Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen delivered to the students of Upper TCV School.

Penpa Tsering began by casting aspirations on Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, claiming that the high lama came to power through the manipulations of his mother and that he died of a disease as the result of the demon’s curse.

In fact, it was the 4th Panchen Lama Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen who by divination chose Lobsang Gyatso as the reincarnation of the 4th Dalai Lama. The was the same Panchen Lama who recognized Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen as the unmistaken incarnation of his predecessor, Ngawang Sonam Geleg Pelzangpo.

The Panchen Lama even wrote a prayer listing Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous incarnations as including Bodhisattva Manjushri, Mahasiddha Birupa, Sakya Pandita, Buton Rinchen Drub, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and Panchen Sonam Dragpa. The same line of predecessors of Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen have also been confirmed by no less than Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche.

Once again, Penpa Tsering clearly presumes to know better than the esteemed Pabongka Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche, and even dares to naysay the 4th Panchen Lama, who was the teacher of both the Fifth Dalai Lama as well as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

If Penpa Tsering is correct that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen came to power by the craftiness of his mother, then the 4th Panchen Lama in fact had no clairvoyance whatsoever. That would also mean that the Panchen Lama’s selection of the Fifth Dalai Lama must be called into question.

How can the same Panchen Lama who had the omniscience to select a candidate who arose to become The Great Fifth Dalai Lama be so easily outwitted when it came to his other student, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen? But that is what Penpa Tsering, whose statement claims a higher wisdom than the Panchen Lama, Kyabje Pabongkha Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, wanted the young Tibetan students of Upper TCV to believe. And if that is not outrageous enough, Penpa Tsering insisted that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, who was of the same mind continuum as Manjushri, was possessed by an evil spirit and died as the result of that. By Penpa Tsering’s definition, not even enlightened beings are safe from demon possessions and in that way, he challenged everything the Buddha himself taught.

In an environment that is already highly sensitive and on an issue that has divided the Tibetan people, any good leader would do what is necessary to calm emotions. However, Penpa Tsering clearly feels it is more important to push forward the views of the CTA at all costs, regardless of the consequences to the Tibetan society at large. Even schoolchildren are not to be spared in the CTA’s efforts to justify their actions in enforcing the Dorje Shugden ban.



  1. By the 19th century, life entrustments can be found in some Gelug masters’ collected works. In the collected works of Changlung Pandita (1770-1845), one finds a life entrustment to the Five Warriors connected with the Hayagriva Most Secret Form (rta mgrin yang gsang). The collected works of Gendun Dargye has a life entrustment ritual for Setrabchen per the instructions of his teacher Gomang Tenpa Choepel (1840-1907/1908). Life entrustment rituals for various protectors can be found in the collected works of Rongchen Kirti Lobsang Trinley (1849-1904), including Setrabchen and Dorje Shugden. In addition, there existed a different life entrustment for Dorje Shugden written down by Rinchen Wangyal (1741-1812) of Sera Monastery.

    Unbelievable, the length they go to root out Gyelukpa.

    He is abusing his powers to ‘brainwash’ the Tibetan people with lies of great masters who are Dorje Shugden practitioners like Pabongkha Rinpoche, who is one of the most highly respected Gelugpa Lama and who is also the root guru to many Gelugpa masters.
    The CTA are using lies to influence their people that DS is a demon so that the Tibetan people will continue to support the illegal ban they are now trying to defend.
    ‘What goes around comes around” When the ban are finally lifted they will be tasting their own medicine when the truth is out and the Gelugpa lineage will continue to flourish.

  3. It is unbelievable! There are so many contradictions in that 12 minutes of speech by Penpa Tsering, it is an insult to his audience, to Tibetans, to His Holiness, CTA and to the intelligence of mankind. There are a few questions and humble opinions of mind that I would like to raise.

    First, at the beginning of the video, Penpa Tsering mentions that Dorje Shugden (or Dolgyal) was eradicated after a fire puja, and then after 46 years of eradicating Shugden, it appeared again and stayed around. Does that mean that the sacred rituals of Tibetan Buddhism such as fire pujas do not work well? Why then even rely on rituals and pujas when the problem can’t be solved. He is literally saying that fire pujas are ineffective, when in-fact, it is one of the most powerful pujas that the monastery is able to perform to clear obstacles, because a ‘spirit’ like Shugden is able to rise above these rituals after some time. So even the three jewels cannot protect one against a spirit, so why take refuge at all? The entire foundation of Buddhism would then be rocked. Additionally, if the Dolgyal spirit was eradicated, why is CTA doing so much to stop its practise since back then, when Shugden was supposed to already be eradicated?

    Secondly, Penpa Tsering mentioned that Dorje Shugden is not considered as a main protector but the lowest level protector. If Dorje Shugden causes so much harm to Tibetans and to those who practise Him, then why have Dorje Shugden as a protector at all? It makes no sense to rely on a protector who cannot help one but instead destroys one. Also, Penpa Tsering mentions that only small monasteries practises Dorje Shugden. Is Serpom not big? Is Shar Gaden not big? They are full fledged running monasteries. Is NKT considered small? Why are they all over the world? They are even bigger than the CTA themselves, so it is a blatant outright lie that only “small monasteries” practise Dorje Shugden.

    Thirdly, Penpa Tsering mentions that since 1640, during the time of the 5th Dalai Lama, there were restrictions to Dorje Shugden practices. Why did the 5th Dalai Lama write a prayer to Dorje Shugden. Why did the current Dalai Lama write prayers to Dorje Shugden, if Shugden’s practise was already restricted in 1640? Where Is the proof that Gaden Tri Rinpoche and all the highest lamas restrict this practise?

    Penpa Tsering argues that Dorje Shugden is so prominent in the 19th and 20th century because it was picked up by Pabongkha Rinpoche, and yet, there was so much faith and trust by the highest spiritual guides of the Tibetan Buddhist world, such as the 13th Dalai Lama himself, on this being named Pabongkha Rinpoche. This is dissing the intelligence and attainments of the 13th Dalai lama too for he was the one that had much high regard for Pabongkha Rinpoche, and Pabongkha Rinpoche could even move from sitting at the side during one of His Holiness’s teachings to the front. In that regard, Pabongkha Rinpoche is of equalled stature to many of the other tulkus there, and so, based on the same attainments that they all have, does that mean that all the other Tulkus’s attainments aren’t real as well, because Pabongkha Rinpoche was also considered of the same rank, or even higher, than them?

    Another evident of contradicting ‘facts’ which Penpa Tsering pointed was that he mentioned that since Childhood, Pabongkha Rinpoche was bright in prayer activities, writings, etc and that the 13th Dalai Lama had shown interest in him and let him give lamrim teachings because there were no other lamas to give lamrim teachings. Then later on, Penpa Tsering mentions that in the later part of Pabongkha Rinpoche’s life, there was some occurrence of unfortunate situations because of his practise of Dorje Shugden.. And then at a later point, Penpa Tsering then says that when Pabongkha Rinpoche was a child, he was controlled by the spirit of Dorje Shugden. So, which one is it, Penpa Tsering? If he was a child and controlled already by Dorje Shugden, then why rave praises on this bright child, who mastered prayer activities, and writings at a young age? If Dorje Shugden controlled Pabongkha Rinpoche as a young child, then why did the 13th Dalai Lama send Pabongkha Rinpoche to sub in for the Gaden Tri to teach Lamrim at a public teaching? It must mean that Gaden Tri, and the 13th Dalai Lama had no attainments at all to see past this. Penpa Tsering is in actual fact dissing the attainments of the line of incarnations of the Dalai Lama. So is the attainments of the current 14th Dalai Lama real too? If it was the truth, then there would not be so much inconsistencies in what Penpa Tsering tell these young Tibetans.

    Penpa Tsering also said that Pabongkha Rinpoche is serving Dorje Shugden’s purpose and being contolled by DS. What is DS’s purpose to control them? What proof is there to Dorje Shugden’s so called purpose that even such highly attained and esteemed lamas who have displayed their attainments by their mere reincarnations, is working to serve this ‘purpose’ of DS and be in control by a spirit which will harm. If Dorje Shugden is not giving protection, help or luck to those who practise, then why are Shugden monasteries growing, and why are there 2million Shugden practitioners worldwide, if this deity cannot help them?

    If Pabongkha Rinpoche was so bad, why are his relics being kept by Lama Zopa and FPMT, and be part of their relic world tour? So Penpa Tsering is also indirectly questioning Lama Zopa’s attainments for relics are such holy objects and revered by Lama Zopa himself….and amongst them is the relic of Pabongkha Rinpoche.     It is clear that the so-called facts told by Penpa Tsering are just outright, blatant lies, that are insulting to the intelligence of the mind of people in today’s world. I would be worried too, having representatives such as Penpa Tsering, in my government.

The mpst harmful and shameful thing is he even talks bad about all the high Lama such as Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Can you believe a great lama like Pabongka Rinpoche done so much damage in the past? In his speak also that Penpa Tsering accused Pabongka Rinpoche eradicate Nyingma teaching, destroying Guru Rinpoche’s statue and burning Nyingma monasteries…do you believe it? Even the speaker wants to tell lie also a very stupid lie!

    As a speaker of a government means he or she has huge impact to his audience, then when he speak must think twice, before he deliver the message. Whatever he speak in public will make a huge impact to the audience.

    On other hands, who allow this speaker talk in front of public? Of course I didn.t mentioned you can guess who is support this speaker? The answer is CTA!
    Yes, this is CTA another dirty method tried to influence the fresh, young and energetic young generation. Luckily nowadays all the new generation, they are educated, smart, open-minded, and high intelligent. They are not easy be get influence by sweet talk, they will go to research, find out more detail, and explore themselves in varieties areas.

    I no idea what CTA will go to do again, but I too believed people like to know the fact and truth. If they find out the truth then CTA will be in very big trouble. The reason is they are telling lie over 20 years. The ban will be lift in one day, if the ban lift all the lie tell by CTA will catch up like a big karma ball, it will ripen

  6. The speaker contradicts himself a lot in this speech.

    1. First of all, if HH Pabongka Rinpoche is controlled by an evil spirit, why still address him with the title Kyabje? Kybje was an acknowledgement for the high attainment of a person. So was HH Pabongka Rinpoche a highly attained master or simply a small monk who was controlled by a evil spirit.

    2. The speaker claimed HH Pabongka Rinpoche was only a small monk but at the same time said that he was an expert in Lamrim. It made me think about how attained is Dalai Lama and other so-called high lama? If a small monk was so highly regarded by 13th Dalai Lama, I would have doubt on the qualifications of the Sanghas in Tibetan Buddhism. Can I therefore believe what they say? It would mean what Dalai Lama is saying is dubious.

    3. The speaker said HH Pabongka Rinpoche was controlled by the Dorje Shugden the evil spirit since he was a young boy. If he was already controlled by a evil spirit, won’t his guru or the person who gave him ordination know it? Why would a spirit allow the person he is controlling to take refuge in the 3 Jewels?

    4. Speaker said that HH Pabongka Rinpoche destroyed statue and monasteries of other lineages, this was an act of disparaging the Buddhas, why wasn’t he reborn in lower realm but came back again as a human being and became a monk?

    5. The speaker said Dalai Lama allow his guru HH Trijang Rinpoche to practice Dorje Shugden, this is something I don’t understand. If Dorje Shugden is truly an evil spirit, why didn’t Dalai Lama tried all he could to stop HH Trijang Rinpoche to practice? If Dalai Lama truly practices Guru-Student (Samaya) relationship, he must love his guru very much, how come he can bear to see his guru going down to 3 lower realms? We all know a practitioner’s attainments come from the guru, it is said in the 50 Stanza of Guru Devotion too. If this is the case, can we doubt the attainments of Dalai Lama?

    6. If HH Pabongka Rinpoche practiced evil spirit, whatever he taught must not be pure Dharma, his teachings would have been contaminated. CTA should remove all the teachings of HH Pabongka Rinpoche from the monasteries, no one should study them. CTA should also stop the publication and study of Lamrim by HH Pabongka Rinpoche because it will bring bad results to the practitioners. Even if someone is not a Dorje Shugden practitioner but by reading or practising Dharma based on the teachings of a Dorje Shugden practitioner, they will be affected badly too. They will also become the cause for shortening Dalai Lama’s life.

    Lastly, Dalai Lama is going to be 79 years old this year. According to World Health Organisation, “Life expectancy at birth for the whole population across 22 Asian countries reached 72.2 years on average in 2010, a gain of more than 15 years since 1970. “. I think 79 years old is considered long life in Asia.

  7. Seriously, whoever that can think better would know he’s lying through out the entire speech. If whoever practiced Dorje Shugden, his or her life will be taken by Dorje Shugden, why am i still alive?? if HH Kyebje Pabongka Rinpoche destroyed the statue of Guru Rinpoche and all sorts of evil things that he did in His pass life as mentioned by Penpa Tsering, very simple, Rinpoche will not reincarnated and enthroned as HH Pabongka Rinpoche this life. Is he trying to say HH Trijang Rinpoche is someone else? HHDL is not HHDL? Who’s HH Ganchen Rinpoche now? Who are they? Is he trying to say they all fake lamas just like how he put down Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche?

    Now think…. Who is the one who wanted to control the people? Who is the one who abused the teachings of Buddha and used Buddhism and as a tool to control the people of Tibet? Tibet is a land of snow, a land of many holy mountains, a land of compassion. What is CTA trying to do? They are destroying their own mother land by poisoning their own gurus. What moral and spiritual example are they trying to set for the young generation? They are poisoning these young people’s mind with hatred, angry, revenge and violence.

    Being a good leader, Penpa Tsering should be talking about how to improve the economy, how to improve the living, moral discipline, education of their people. He as a lead speaker representing the country he just go on and on bad mouthing a very high and respected lama who had done so much for Buddhism hundreds of years ago with all the lies and unproven facts. Being a non Tibetan I am very sorry to say that I am extremely worried for the people of Tibet leaded by this kind of leaders. Totally lost hope.

  8. After putting up a “hit list”, an open letter (from United Front of Tibetan People) to incite violence, what is next act of CTA? May be it time they will defame and condemn all the lineage Gurus?

    Do read up this good article (and read the comments left by some readers), and it will be very clear to you that there are just so many flaws in the logic. But then again, CTA never learn, and they are harping that Tibetans do not get much information from internet and still trying to brainwash them.     CTA, please behave like a Buddhist, and your actions put HH Dalai Lama to shame, because your act of violence, undemocratic, selfish and arrogant is in 100% contradiction of HH Dalai Lama’s vision of peace, acceptance and compassion.

    In the video, many of the students are boring during the audience its feel like torment to them… How cruelty the CTA not only hurt DS practitioners but also young students…

    Penpa Tsering criticize Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo (one of the most respected high lamas of Tibetan Buddhism) with the speech filled with lies and distortions of history; is truly a shame… Hence Penpa Tsering is just a speaker of Parliament not eligible to talk about such topic…

    How can a highly attain Lama can be influence by spirit? Penpa Tsering think that everyone is short of Dharma knowledge just like him?

    Please please please CTA and politicians, spend your time well on your main duty; dun polluted the future generation with LIES anymore…

Penpa Shering spoke as if he is a Geshe or great debater and was trying to brainwash the students mind? Probably he knew that the adults are difficult so he changed tactic to buy the innocent students heart this time?   11. Sadly to said that this 12 mins video was full of lies and untruth facts, main purpose is to “brainwash” the future generation.

    Penpa Tsering not only criticized Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche who is a highly attained lama, a great Lamrim teacher, he even bluntly said that Dorje Shugden is not giving protection, help or luck to those who practise. It makes no sense since they are so many DS practioners all over the world, and there were monks and civillians sacrifice their life and families of not giving up the practise,It makes no sense to rely on a protector who cannot help.

    Totally agreed with Sofia Neumerkel that Penpa Tsering’s speech was full of contradictions and lies.

    Certainly, CTA is the BIG BROTHER behind the scene.

  12. 1. The Dalai Lama is a Noble Prize winner and to a large extent respected as an authority in Buddhism. His views are accepted by some world leaders, MNCs and even non-Buddhists. But when a member of the Tibetan Parliament hurls rude invective at high lamas and the DL’s teachers, it certainly disgraces the Dalai Lama. This seems to be encouraging the Tibetan Youths to ridicule their own teachers and even the Dalai Lama!

    2. The CTA is either desperate or too shallow in their analytical skills to realize how damaging Penpa Tsering’s actions are.

    4. Is the Dalai Lama going to reprimand Penpa Tsering or will HH close his eyes to the verbal brutality targeted at his “beloved” Gurus?

  13. In carrying out the duties’ the Speaker of Parliament must remain impartial and fair to all “MPs”; should not take sides in a debate, but instead regulates and enforces the rules of a debate. This is one of the roles of Speakers of Parliaments of huge developed and democratic governments.
    In the case of the Tibetan in exile government, it seems like they entirely missed out this point. They have appointed a Speaker of Parliament that is bias, ignorant and unfair( to the point of being rude). This reflects very poorly on the Tibetan government. So much efforts have been put in by the government to appeal for freedom , and then autonomy. Calling on the attention of the whole world to listen to their plight and appeals, and asked for help to attain their goals. Yet time and again they make such major blatant mistakes by putting such unqualified and undignified representatives upfront, who choose to discuss on topics which could only cause the world to look at them poorly. People will be questioning and doubtful of their true course. This is not good at all . The CTA must be revamped for the sake of all Tibetans and their future livelihoods !

  14. Go on Penpa Tsering, you can go on insulting and defaming Khabje Pabongkha Rinpoche Dechen Ningpo who is the key and the foremost lineage master and Khabje Trijang Rinpoche who is the root guru to the Dalai Lama. Does he understand what he is doing?

    It appears that Penpa Tsering is insinuating that the Dalai Lama is just as bad or even worse. He is indirectly publicly insulting the Dalai Lama since all teachings, wisdom and all goodness or otherwise of the Dalai Lama are transmitted by these masters to him. If these masters that Penpa Tsering claimed to be devil worshippers wouldn’t they have adversely influenced the Dalai Lama? Isn’t it shameful and embarrassing to the Dalai Lama for having such an intimate spiritual connection to Khabje Pabongkha Rinpoche whom Penpa Tsering has such lowly opinion?

    This is shocking, what is happening to the whole shame gang of the CTA? Where did Penpa Tsering get his honour, dignity and wages from? Isn’t it from the Dalai Lama? Why does a dog bite its owner? This is too bad.

  15. Obviously the CTA is very desperate and the truth of Dorje Shugden can no longer be hidden. Penpa Tsering spoke so smoothly as if it what he said was real. Unfortunately, his statements contradict one another, even if a general public who has little or no knowledge on the topic would find him contradicting himself. On one hand he said Pabongkha Rinpoche was a small lama, on the other hand he addressed him as Kyabje and said Pabongka Rinpoche was very good in Lamrim, even the 13th Dalai Lama asked him to teach instead of the Gaden Tripa!

    What I find most disturbing is the fact that he actually went to school to give this kind of speech to the young minds! How can the school let this happened? Why would a politician goes to the school to brainwash students on Dorje Shugden’s topic? Aren’t they supposed to give at least motivational speech instead of slandering the high lamas? Everyone knows how important Pabongka Rinpoche is in the dissemination of Gelug teachings in Tibet and in China. His students are all erudite masters, Trijang Rinpoche, Ling Rinpoche, Khangsar Rinpoche, Ribu Rinpoche, just to name a few! All the Gelug master are direct and indirect students of Pabongka Rinpoche, including the 14th Dalai Lama!

    Penpa Tsering not only know nothing about the history, he is also very rude and irrespective. People like this are really the true culprits of the dying of Tibetan culture. If they do not know how to respect, they do not have gratification. Because of that, they do not see the value in preserving the heritage. So, they’ll do whatever solely for their own gain. Tibetans’ future is at risk in the hands of incapable politicians like Penpa Tsering. Do you still want to support their cause?

Is really a shame for this politician as a democracy party the representative suppose to help the public to serve the Tibetan not to create more confuse among the people especially the youngster who are the future generation for the Tibetan .     他在前面提到雄登已经通过火供被消灭了, 不过为什么现在又阻止藏人修雄登? 如果雄登已经被消灭, 何来雄登? 又何必禁止修雄登?

    他还说Pabongka Rinpoche 修邪法, 为什么他还是可以继续转世? 而且Pabongka Rinpoche 还是现世达赖喇嘛的祖师呢!! 难道现世达赖喇嘛修的法也不是正法??

    这样的演讲就想荼毒学生的心智, 也为免太小看现在年轻人的智慧了。

  23. The whole 13 minute from the Speaker is attack with no facts and proof is utter rubbish on Dorje Shugden, Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen and H.H Kyabje Pabongkha Rinpoche! What sort of proof does he has to say such malice infront of the student???

    With so many issue surrounding the Tibetan community, the CTA and the speaker should instead address the community issue and solve it first hand, and not dwelling in malicious attack on High Lama’s such as Pabongkha Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche. What is worst is that, the Penpa Tsering only is doing a one way communication, which he is dominating the whole session by influencing the student with false accusation on Dorje Shugden practice, history, and even worst, dragging another Sect of Buddhism into the Picture. From the whole video we can see what is their credibility is, and now the whole world will see who this CTA is, by twisting the facts!

    I wonder if they are students to H.H Dalai Lama, doesn’t they aware that what are they doing and saying that cause confusion and even disparaging a Buddha or Lama, will cause them to create huge negative karma?

    I am doubting their true spiritual practice in the sense! I hope H.H Dalai Lama will take necessary action against the Speaker for disparaging H.H Pabongkha Rinpoche with ill intent, which is very obvious from his body language as shown in the video!

  24. Penpa Tsering’s image as the Speaker of Parliment in the CTA has gone down the gutter with such public talks against the freedom of spiritual practices. And his audience were students of Upper CTV School. It shows the Tibetan leadership in CTA are so desperate in justifying their unjust ban that they are resorting to brain washing students to believe in their lies. What a mockery for the CTA and of course the CTA is behind it. And the Dalai Lama supports it as well. So much lies, hypocrisy and unjust inhumane actions are being meted out by the CTA with the support of the Dalai Lama against their own people.

    Buddhism is being destroyed from within and by its own followers, as predicted by Lord Buddha.

  25. It’s sad that a Speaker of Parliament can meddle in spiritual matters. He should kept to secular matters so as not to be seen to be bias and uncouth. Bringing spiritual matters to the school shows that something fishy is going on. This shows that brainwashing is going on in a massive scale. Please, CTA separate church or rather temple from state. Do not make this into a circus and lose all credibility in the eyes of the world.

  26. Amazing how a politician can even criticize a religious practice. What happened to Human Rights and religious freedom? Why are spirit worshippers not condemned as well? Why the prejudice? That would also mean that the Panchen Lama’s selection of the Fifth Dalai Lama must be called into question.

    How can the same Panchen Lama who had the omniscience to select a candidate who arose to become The Great Fifth Dalai Lama be so easily outwitted when it came to his other student, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?”

    HH the 14th Dalai Lama must be a hoax as well. Then, why even trust what HHDL accuses of Dorje Shugden?

  27. This disparagement of Pabongka is indeed disgusting, as his Dharma teachings are perfection. But what is also disgusting is how Kelsang Gyatso has fallen from being a great teacher to an enormous embarrassment and a cult leader of a third rate bunch of whackos who have no idea what Buddhism is any more. It’s a disgrace. This is Gyatso’s legacy now: the man who attacked good men like the Dalai Lama to raise up a misunderstood diety.   28. story of dorjeshugden. In 17th century there was a intelligent geluk lama called trulku drakpa gyaltsen in Tibet. The great 5th Dalai lama visited the great Samye monastery and obtained nyingma teachings from Urgyen terdak llingpa including many great tertons. When 5th Dalai lama went back to Lhasa the Nechung oracle brought from India by Padmasambava as a protector for Samye monastery was also flown with Him and Dalai lama made a temple for Nechung. Trulku Drakpa Gyaltsen was a disciple of HH and he did not want The Dalai Lama to receive nyingma teachings and empowerment. So he tried several time assassinate the dalai lama. While the 5th Dalai lama was returning from China after paying homage to the Chinese emperor the goons sent by Trulku drakpa were waiting on the way to assassinate Him. These goons were arrested n when inquired about who was behind the seen they informed the officials that they had been sent by trulku drakpa gyaltsen. Immediately trulku drakpa gyaltsen was arrested and jailed. After a few days he was executed by suffocating n crushing his sacred parts. After three days he became damsi or bad spirit because of back karmic action. This spirit is Dorjeshugden n it can not be a manifestation of Buddha. They followers of shugden made it themselve.

  29. What the heck is this Penpa Tsering speaking about in an Upper TCV Tibetan Children Village school? Who is he to speak about spirituality? What does he know about Dorje Shugden to go on and on and put down highly attained masters, enlightened beings?!

    This shows that the Central Tibetan Administration is not democratic at all. Or why would Penpa Tsering go and defame a Buddhist practice and teachers to students?!!

Contemplate This

.…Instead of turning away people who practise Dorje Shugden, we should be kind to them. Give them logic and wisdom without fear, then in time they give up the ‘wrong’ practice. Actually Shugden practitioners are not doing anything wrong. But hypothetically, if they are, wouldn’t it be more Buddhistic to be accepting? So those who have views against Dorje Shugden should contemplate this. Those practicing Dorje Shugden should forbear with extreme patience, fortitude and keep your commitments. The time will come as predicted that Dorje Shugden’s practice and it’s terrific quick benefits will be embraced by the world and it will be a practice of many beings.
