Do it yourself.

Self confidence plays an important part in every aspect of a mans life.
Knowing that no external sources,no faith or rituals can save him,the Buddhist feels the need to rely on his own efforts. He gain confidence through self-reliance.He realizes that the whole responsibility of his present life as well as his future life depends completely on himself alone.Achieving enlightenment can be compared to curing an illness. The doctor diagnoses the ailment and prescribes the medicine. The medicine must be taken by the person himself. In order to be cured he must faithfully follow the instructions given by the doctor ,his daily diet and other relevant medical restraints.
Likewise,a person must follow the precepts, instructions and advice given by the Buddha by controlling or subduing one's greed, hatred and ignorance. No one can attain enlightenment by simply singing praises of the Buddha or making offerings to him.
Buddhism is not a religion where people can attain enlightenment by by mere prayers or begging to be saved,
but must strive hard by controlling selfish desires and emotions in order to gain enlightenment.

When we apply the concept of DIY to Buddhism, we can define DIY Buddhism as studying, practicing, or evolving the self without the aid of Buddhist experts or professionals (i.e. formal teachers). Instead of home improvement projects, here we have self improvement projects.

DIY Buddhism goes all the way back to the Buddha himself and showed how the Buddha is the ultimate example of DIY Buddhism. So true! I can’t think of a better example of DIY Buddhism than Gautama Buddha himself.

Since 1995, anyone with a computer and an internet connection has access to the myriad Buddhist teachings and teachers all around the globe. And this increase in the accessibility and distribution of Buddhism is a huge game-changer. Sanghas are now virtual and global for the very first time and we are not only actively participating in them, we are actively co-creating them at the very same time. Through online meditation groups, virtual retreats, and Buddhist home study courses, all the great wisdom teachings are only a click or touchscreen away. I think this would blow the socks right off of Gautama Buddha (if he wore them).

DIY in Buddhism, is very difficult for some of us!  In Buddhism it is essential to realise that the teacher is ultimately important because he lead us to our own inner wisdom - our own 'inner guru'. We need to develop our own wisdom and insight to become a teacher and in the end, even a Buddha ourselves.

Lama Tubten Yeshe once said:
"A guru is a person who can really show you the true nature of your mind and who knows the perfect remedies for your psychological problems. Someone who doesn't know his own mind can never know others' minds and therefore cannot be a guru."
