The enthronement of the 20th Denma Gongsa Rinpoche

31 July 2014 marks a day of rejoicing as the world celebrates the return of the great Dharma master, H.E. Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, and his enthronement in Gonsa Monastery in Tibet. The previous Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was a highly respected Lama who chose to remain in Tibet during difficult times. Through his great efforts and sincerity in spreading the Dharma, the previous (19th) Denma Gonsa Rinpoche became one of the most respected Lamas, by both Tibetans and Chinese.

The previous Denma Gonsa Rinpoche entered clear light in 2005, but the local populace have not lost faith nor forgotten the great deeds of this master. Over 200,000 Dorje Shugden people from Tibet and around the world (which is more than the number of Tibetans living in exile) attended the enthronement ceremony of the 20th Denma Gonsa Rinpoche on 31 July 2014. The pomp and grandeur of the ceremony was especially moving in the light of the fact Tibetans are not wealthy. For them to offer so much towards their lama and his enthronement ceremony, which was held in the traditional manner, indicates that Tibetan culture and faith in their religion remains strong in Tibet.

The fact this enthronement ceremony was held also shows that Dorje Shugden’s practice is not bad or evil, as claimed by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA; the Tibetan leadership based in Dharamsala). Denma Gonsa Rinpoche relied upon Dorje Shugden until the day he died, and spread his practice among all of his students. Thus the sheer volume of Dorje Shugden devotees in attendance clearly shows that Dorje Shugden’s practice is flourishing in Tibet. A Demographic Survey of Tibetans in Exile, released by the Planning Commission of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in 2010 estimates only 128,014 Tibetans living in exile. One can therefore conclude that the CTA’s claims that Dorje Shugden is only practiced by a minority is a falsehood.

It is indeed a joyful occasion that Dorje Shugden practitioners in Tibet are allowed to welcome the new incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, one of our lineage’s lamas. We rejoice that yet another Dorje Shugden lama has been officially enthroned. Through the blessings of the lineage masters and pure aspirations from previous lives, may this incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche continue his previous lives’ works to preserve and spread the holy teachings of Je Tsongkhapa, bring benefit to the people of Tibet and China, and remain with us for a very long time.

An enthronement of a Rinpoche is the formal recognition of a particular child or adult to be the incarnation of a particular lama or Rinpoche from a previous life. This unmistaken child is found by a search party that is formed by the close students of that lama, who are usually part of the Labrang private office) of that lama. The selection process is a particularly arduous task of examining prophesies, dreams and divinations of greatly clairvoyant masters like Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the Dorje Shugden oracle and sometimes close disciples of that particular lama who have very clean samaya (guru-disciple relationship). Then, based on those observations and conclusions, candidates are shortlisted, interviewed and observed.

During the interview, one of the tests involves the candidates identifying personal objects that used to belong to their previous life. These personal objects are displayed along with other items, and the candidate is asked to pick out his personal belongings. The candidates are shortlisted based on behavioral observations and if he picks out the right objects.

The unmistaken incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was recognized by four great masters of the Gelug lineage:

  1. H.H. the Panchen Lama
  2. H.H. Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche
  3. H.H. Pabongka Rinpoche
  4. The Dorje Shugden oracle

Below are images and videos of the enthronement ceremony contributed by the public. We hope you will rejoice with us in the return of this lama who will no doubt grow up to become a strong proponent of Lama Tsongkhapa’s tradition and Dorje Shugden’s practice.

Pre-Enthronement

The crowd arrives

Thousands of people, many travelling great distances, made their way to the monastery grounds a few days ahead of the actual enthronement. The number of white tents increased daily, covering the plains like a small city. Because of the sheer volume of people wishing to pay homage to and receive blessings from the new incarnation of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche, the monastery had to hold the ceremony in the open air in order to accommodate everyone. Remember that the number of people in attendance – 200,000 Dorje Shugden practitioners – grossly outweighed the total number of Tibetans in exile…

A grand temporary entrance was built specially for Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s enthronement ceremony

People from all over Tibet, China, and other parts of the world travelled to Denma Monastery as early as one week before the enthronement date

Traditional Tibetan tents erected as a temporary living space. Being nomadic in nature, this was a very simple process for most Tibetans

Much credit has to be given to Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s Labrang (personal household and office) who held the ceremony, for their organizational skills. Sangha members came from all over Tibet, to witness this historic occasion – the return of their lama, and the enthronement of his new incarnation

Cars queued for kilometres and kilometres, full of Dorje Shugden practitioners and devotees wishing to get a blessing from this holy lama

In the distance on the left is the yellow pavilion tent set up for Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

The authorities were aware of this event (as indicated by this police vehicle) and allowed the enthronement ceremony to take place

In the distance is Denma Gonsa Monastery. The monastery houses the world’s largest Tsongkhapa statue, at 101ft tall and the largest Dorje Shugden statue in Tibet, at 18ft tall. In his previous life, Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was a strong proponent of Dorje Shugden’s practice, a fact which clearly has not harmed or prevented his incarnation from returning

The monastery is no stranger to elaborate festivals like this. They had previously hosted a Grand Prayer Festival which was attended by 40,000 to 50,000 Dorje Shugden devotees and students of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

The numbers of tents increase by the day, covering the field like a small city

The grandly decorated vehicle which will transport Denma Gonsa Rinpoche on enthronement day

The Arrival of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

Like many vehicles, the one pictured here bears an image of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s main protector, Dorje Shugden

Contrary to the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) insistence that Dorje Shugden is a minority practice, the pictures here clearly show that Dorje Shugden’s practice is flourishing in Tibet and growing all over the world, in China, Mongolia as well as Europe. As more and more Dorje Shugden lamas come of age and begin to spread the Gelug teachings, the CTA’s claim that Dorje Shugden is a minority practice begins to look increasingly illogical. How can Dorje Shugden be a minority practice when thousands of people all over the world happily and faithfully turn up for teachings and blessings, carrying Dorje Shugden images and prostrating to Dorje Shugden statues?

  1. 5000 Tibetans receive Dorje Shugden’s blessing
  2. 400,000 in Chatreng Sampheling Monastery!
  3. Dorje Shugden Initiation to Thousands at Markam, Chamdo, Tibet
  4. Dorje Shugden Initiation & Tsongkhapa Long Life Initiation to thousands
  5. Dorje Shugden Initiation to 5000 People at Chamdo, Tibet

  13. How Five Powerful Lamas Are Changing the World

As you can see, in areas where the CTA do not have jurisdiction, Dorje Shugden practice is growing and hundreds of thousands of people continue to propitiate the blessings of this Buddha, like they have always done. In areas where the CTA has control, for example Dharamsala, there is much religious strife and disagreement. We can thus logically conclude that any schism and disharmony in Tibetan Buddhist communities arises from the CTA’s unnecessary and illegal ban on Dorje Shugden. Whether Dorje Shugden is a minority practice (as the CTA claims) or not, everyone should be given the freedom to worship as they like. This freedom, which is absent where the CTA has control, is what gives rise to the religious harmony, understanding and respect.

Every available space is filled with a devotee trying to catch a glimpse of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche. Faith and guru devotion remains strong in this part of Tibet, and especially amongst Shugden practitioners. Clearly the CTA’s illogical ban and ridiculous edicts have no influence here

The crowd is cleared as Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s vehicle approaches and the monks rush to lay out the carpet to welcome their lama

Thousands of people, both ordained and lay, greet Denma Gonsa Rinpoche. Notice the police presence in the foreground, providing protection for the young lama and crowd control. His security and personal safety was taken very seriously, considering his status as a Dorje Shugden lama

The Return Of A Great Master: H.E. Kyabje Denma Gonsar Rinpoche http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/news/the-return-of-a-great-master-h-e-kyabje-denma-gonsar-rinpoche/ http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/news/the-return-of-a-great-master-h-e-kyabje-denma-gonsar-rinpoche/#comments Wed, 09 Oct 2013 19:13:41 +0000 admin http://www.dorjeshugden.com/?p=30263

The 20th Denma Gonsar Rinpoche

On the 6th of October 2013, a very special and propitious event took place in Tsampehling Monastery in Chatreng, the home monastery of the illustrious Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche. That auspicious day marked the enthronement of the new incarnation of one of the most extraordinary lamas of our time, the erudite Kyabje Denma Gonsar Dorje Chang. The late Denma Gonsar Rinpoche, who entered clear light in the year 2005, was an outstanding student of both Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, and went on to become a highly regarded senior lama and one of the most important figures within the Gelugpa sect. Denma Gonsar Rinpoche was also a prominent lineage holder of various important teachings including the practice of Dorje Shugden.

A few months before Denma Gonsar Rinpoche entered clear light, during a lecture he was giving at Tsampehling Monastery, Rinpoche stated clearly that his next reincarnation would be born in Chatreng, a place famed for its strong devotion to Lama Tsongkhapa and the enlightened Protector Dorje Shugden.

In addition, Denma Gonsar Rinpoche instructed that his next incarnation would be a boy who could recite the root tantra of Guhyasamaja perfectly from memory. This warrants significant note because the root tantra of Guhyasamaja is an advanced, complicated practice with extensive literature consisting of seventeen chapters with tremendous amount of details. That the late Denma Gonsar Rinpoche pre-empted his students to only recognize and enthrone the incarnation with such an incredible ability speaks clearly of his high attainments and clairvoyance. Only an authentic, attained master who has achieved the enlightened mind could return with his attainments intact, to continue to turn the wheel of Dharma again.

And so, as this great Master had prophesied and instructed, his incarnation – the 20th Denma Gonsar Rinpoche was officially enthroned in his Guru’s monastery. The boy by the name of Dorje, who is seven years old today, was born to a prominent family in Chatreng just as the late Denma Gonsar Rinpoche had predicted. Interestingly, it is the same extended family to which Rabten Tulku Rinpoche (reincarnation of Geshe Rabten) also belongs.

A few months before Dorje was recognized, the monks who were charged with the responsibility of looking for Rinpoche’s incarnation consulted the Dorje Shugden oracle who advised that Rinpoche’s incarnation had already been born in eastern Tibet where Chatreng lies, and that the search should begin. The boy they found showed many miraculous signs and one clear indication was the visible symbols of the sun and moon on the boy’s forehead. The sun and moon are symbols of wisdom and compassion indicating the attainment of enlightenment, and from the first Denma Gonsar Rinpoche to the present 20th incarnation, the sun and moon marks have always been visible on their foreheads.

The boy, Dorje bearing visible symbols of the sun and moon on his forehead as had all previous incarnations of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche

And so began the examination and confirmation process. The current Pabongka Choktrul Rinpoche, who frequently travelled to Denma Gonsar Rinpoche’s monastery in Kham to receive teachings and commentaries from the late Master, confirmed Dorje as the current incarnation of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche by divination. The octogenarian Purbu Khuten of Sera Monastery in Lhasa, who was personally trained and authorized by the late Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, also examined the boy, Dorje, and confirmed him as Denma Gonsar Rinpoche’s incarnation. [See Note 1]

In addition, the very well known Nirtue Rinpoche, regarded as the highest and most respected lama in Denma, Kham, journeyed to Chatreng to test the candidate and concurred that the boy was indeed the correct incarnation of Rinpoche. Also of great import is the official recognition of this boy by His Holiness the Panchen Lama, whose lineage can be traced back to Subuthi, one of the original disciples of the Lord Buddha himself. Upon confirmation, His Holiness the Panchen Lama issued an official letter formally recognizing this incarnation of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche.

The official letter of recognition issued by His Holiness the Panchen Lama. A rough translation of the letter reads: “The search party of Dharmaraja Gonsar Choje Thubten Gelek Gyatso, who have been praying to The Three Jewels these few years, have found the incarnation of Rinpoche in Chatreng, Ganzi. The child born to the father by the name of Tenzin Ngyape and Tzirin Yongchen the mother, is hereby recognized as the reincarnation of the 19th Gonsar Choje Dharmaraja”

Most significantly, the search and recognition committee of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche requested Geshe Tdonsang, the changtso of Geshe Thubten Trinley, to travel to the United States of America and consult H.H. Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche as well as the Ari Khuten (Ganden oracle of Dorje Shugden). Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche confirmed that Dorje was indeed the authentic incarnation of his student from Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche’s previous life. The Ari Khuten took trance of Duldzin and similarly concurred with Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche. Trijang Rinpoche wrote a long life prayer especially for this incarnation of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche and recommended some pujas to be done for the growth of the new Denma Gonsar Rinpoche’s work. Trijang Rinpoche, together with the Dorje Shugden oracle, Ari Khuten, conferred a new and auspicious name on this young and prodigious master, Losang Yeshe Tenzin Gelek Gyatso, the 20th Denma Gonsar Rinpoche. And with that, the return of an enlightened mind, who was also known as Denma Gonsar Kangyur Rinpoche for his adroit grasp of all 108 volumes of the Kangyur, was official.

The enthronement of the present and 20th Denma Gonsar Rinpoche was also attended by officials from the Chinese Government who is presently making preparations for a grand and second enthronement ceremony to be held in Rinpoche’s home monastery. Throughout the Sino-Tibetan conflict, the previous Denma Gonsar Rinpoche worked tirelessly for the good of all people, both Chinese and Tibetan, with complete impartiality void of any personal and political agendas and that won the trust and respect of the Chinese Government. It is from great works such as that of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche that will lend credence and substance to the Tibetan people’s hope to return to their homeland.

The return of a pure and virtuous master such as Denma Gonsar Rinpoche is vastly important not only for the preservation and spread of the holy Dharma but also as yet another undisputable proof that claims of Dorje Shugden practitioners not being able to take a positive rebirth are nothing but baseless lies intended to trick unwary practitioners into giving up a very crucial Dharma practice for this degenerate time.

DorjeShugden.com celebrates the return of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche with Dharma practitioners all over the world and prays for this great Master’s long and auspicious life, spreading the Dharma and the Protector practice in all ten directions.

Note 1: It is strange and most unfortunate that the original Sera Monastery recognizes and propitiates the enlightened Protector Dorje Shugden whilst Sera Monastery in India refuses to due to pressure from the Dalai Lama’s office and the Central Tibetan Administration.

Retreng Rinpoche Trichen Tenpa Rabgye http://www.dorjeshugden.com/great-masters/enlightened-lamas-series/retreng-rinpoche-trichen-tenpa-rabgye/ http://www.dorjeshugden.com/great-masters/enlightened-lamas-series/retreng-rinpoche-trichen-tenpa-rabgye/#comments Sat, 04 Aug 2012 09:25:05 +0000 admin http://www.dorjeshugden.com/?p=23477 Tritul Tenpa Rabgye (1759-1815) is a native of Lithang, Kham. Even at a young age, Tenpa Rabgye displayed strong affinity for the Dharma. At the tender age of 2, he did something very unusual for someone of his age – to request the Vajravidarna purification from the abbot of Lithang Monastery, Phuntsok Gyato.

It wasn’t long before he was recognised as the reincarnation of another great lama, Trichen Ngawang Chokden. He was then ordained by the Panchen Lama, Palden Yeshe himself and started receiving initiations from him at the age of 10. Among the teachings he received at this time were the teachings and initiations of some of the highest and most complex texts of Heruka and Guhyasamaja.

He later entered Sera Je to further his studies, and went on to aquire a Geshe Lharampa degree. Before entering Gyumed Tantric College, he was given full ordination by Palden Yeshe. He took up residence in Shidey Samten Ling in Lhasa and became a teacher for Changkya Rolpei Dorje’s reincarnation. At age 49, Tritul Tenpa Rabgye gave ten cycles of essential transmission and teachings on the Lamrim to thousands of monks when requested by Sera Je to do so.

Tritul Tenpa Rabgye had a very huge influence on many Gelug Lamas, mainly due to his amazing collection of works. As he was an ardent practitioner of Dorje Shugden, so too became many Gelug Lamas who were influenced by him, especially those of Sera Monastery.

His student, Rinchen Wangyal, authored some of the earliest Dorje Shugden initiations and life entrustment rituals that are still available today. Lobsang Trinley Namgya, who later became a Tsenshab to the 10th and 11th Dalai Lamas is also counted among his disciples. Tritul Tenpa Rabgye also requested for one of the first few extensive rituals on Dorje Shugden to be written which was done by Dragri Gyatso Thaye.

To understand more about Tritul Tenpa Rabgye, we must look at his works. He has four volumes of teachings. The four volumes of collected works was made available when they were published in 1985 by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archive, Dharamsala. The first volume of works primarily consists of liturgies of many tutelary deities.

The second volume of work is more of a collection of answers to the questions that were presented by his many students that covers a variety of subjects. It also contains many short propitiations to various Dharma protectors, both enlightened and worldly.

The third volume discusses more advanced subjects such as the method for developing bodhicitta, as transmitted in the Wheel of Sharp Weapons (Dharmarakshita). The fourth and final volume of works contains even more propitiations, rituals and liturgies for many different yidams and protectors, including a sadhana for the 13-Deity Mandala of Red Yamantaka.

From here, we can see that Tritul Tenpa Rabgye was a very learned scholar and accomplished practitioner, and that he actively promoted and practiced Dorje Shugden. His time predates that of the 13th Dalai Lama, which means that Dorje Shugden’s practice was already strong and firm back then. This refutes the claims of many ill-researched modern day scholars who assert that Dorje Shugden was a little known practice that was popularized only by Pabongkha. They also wrongly accuse of him of making up details about the nature of Dorje Shugden.

On the contrary, Trichen Tenpa Rabgye is known to have written propitiations and prayers (included within his collected words) to several protectors, including Dorje Shugden and Setrap. In both cases, the protectors are referred to as emanations of enlightened beings, with Dorje Shugden associated as an emanation of Vajrapani, a view commonly held by many masters of the time. He also makes references in a praise to the fact that Dorje Shugden abides in the Dharmakaya, strongly indicative of the fact that he is fully enlightened for only Buddhas reside in this sphere.

In combination with works from other Lamas, Trichen Tenpa’s short though important writings on Dorje Shugden form a part of a very significant cannon of work about this Protector and his true nature as an enlightened Buddha. It is clear that many high Lamas back in the day could see the true nature of Dorje Shugden and that he was practised widely by lamas of the highest calibres of the Gelug tradition. It was commonly reputed that those who propitiate him only excelled in their spiritual growth.

All Gelug lamas would have received teachings from Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche. This video shows the lineage lamas leading to Geshe Wangchuk a famous Dorje Shugden lineage master of the Kham area.

There are not many Gelug lamas and monks who have not been a student of Trijang Dorje Chang. These students were inspired and devoted to Kyabje Dorje Chang. Geshe Wangchuk’s enthusiasm and devotion to the Three Jewels shows through in his talks. There is also a scene of Gangchen Lama with Geshe Wangchuk in a car.

May Dorje Shugden’s practice spread far and wide through the works of this great lama.

Geshe Wangchuk and HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche

Recently many high lamas of the Dorje Shugden lineage gathered at Chengdu, Sichuan, China. They are the 101st Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche, the abbot of Serpom Monastery Yongyal Rinpoche, the young and current incarnation of Zemey Rinpoche, Geshe Wangchuk who has been diligently giving Dorje Shugden initiation in Kham Tibet, and a few others.

Zemey Rinpoche was to receive novice monk vows from Yongyal Rinpoche, however Yongyal Rinpoche respectfully requested Gaden Trisur Rinpoche to give the vows to Zemey Rinpoche instead.

At this moment both Zemey Rinpoche and Gaden Trisur Rinpoche are in Zemey Rinpoche’s monastery in Tibet, and it is learned that Zemey Rinpoche will be going to Chamdo Jampa Ling to learn sutra. Auspicious news indeed!

An official young oracle of Dorje Shugden takes trance while Lama Thubten Phurbu is giving Dharma talk in Tibet

Lama Thubten Phurbu is a highly respected teacher in Kham, Tibet. He is outspoken about Dorje Shugden and brings Shugden’s practice to many.

In Lhasa, there are three oracles to Dorje Shugden. One of them is a young oracle who has been taking trance. Here you can see during a dharma talk, Shugden is very pleased and enters the oracle to show his pleasure. Stays for just a short while and then departs.

In Tibetan Monasteries this is a ‘common’ and accepted sight for recognized oracles.

It is beautiful how Shugden lets everyone know he is pleased with the teachings.

In Kham, Tibet, more Tulkus/Geshes/Lamas are practicing Dorje Shugden and making the practice grow. It is growing more than it ever existed before. It has made the lamas work harder to promote Shugden in their individual areas.

The ban has confused many lamas who stayed quiet watching things for some time now. They never speak against the Dalai Lama, and they still don’t, but they sure elucidate with great clarity the lineage and practice of Shugden to thousands.

This trend will continue. As predicted by HH Trijang Rinpoche that in the future the Dalai Lama will make Shugden’s practice grow big.

Very important development. Very powerful trend. This trend will not end anytime soon.

His Holiness Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

Denma Gonsa Rinpoche is a great senior lama and student of both Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Pabongkha Dechen Nyingpo. He transmitted the pure teachings to his district people and 600 monks of his monastery.

This great Monastery houses a 12 story high main image of Je Tsongkapa and has a beautiful Chapel to Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden is the main Dharma protector of this vast Monastery in Kham.

The current Kyabje Pabongkha Choktrul Rinpoche incarnation travelled often to this Monastery to receive rare teachings, practices and commentaries from Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche.

Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche passed away last year. He told his main attendents before passing away that a few boys will claim to be his incarnation. But the real incarnation will recognize himself. He will recite the Root tantra of Guhyasamaja from memory perfectly. Only enthrone this boy as my real incarnation.

This picture was taken a few years ago, showing the main white building before the Dorje Shugden chapel is built

Left (white) houses the Largest Tsongkapa statue in the world being 31 meters or 101ft. The newly built building ( yellow) to the right houses the largest Dorje Shugden statue in the world. It is a Dorje Shugden chapel with a Dorje Shugden statue which is 6 meters or 18 feet tall

His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche (1904-1984) was born in Kham, Tibet, studied at Ganden Monastery, gained renown as a learned Geshe and great debater and served as abbot for nine years. He left Tibet for India in 1959 and later served as principal of the Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath.

Like Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, he was a great teacher and exponent of the benefits of Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden practice, and the end of his life held a week of pujas (chanted prayers) in which he stated very clearly and publicly that his whole life’s work was accomplished through his sincere reliance on Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden.
