MANILA, Philippines — His Holiness Sakya Trizin, whose rank in the Buddhist religion is equivalent to that of a Pope for Catholics, visited Manila City Hall Tuesday as part of the series of religious activities and charity works he has lined up for the country.

Trizin, who arrived here Monday, blessed Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, before proceeding to his charitable works and other activities in other parts of the country.

In his short message, the 66-year-old Buddhist leader said he wanted to propagate friendship, love and respect among different religions and beliefs.

“I believe that all different religions, all different people, by coming together and knowing each other and by sharing the love, joy together . . . we can propagate peace and harmony in this word,” Trizin said.

He said their group, who visited Philippines for the first time, will go to Cebu in the next few days also to  carry out charitable works and feed spiritual needs to people.

Thank you for sharing.

It always great to hear about Dharma reaching other regions in other parts of the world. The Philippines have an extremely large population of Christians, it is really good to know that they too practice religious tolerance by welcoming HH Sakya Trizin to their country. It is also wonderful that HH Sakya Trizin and his students do charitable work in various parts of Philippines, which shows unity and compassion for anyone regardless of heritage and religion.

I believe this is the very first step. When holy beings visits a place, Dharma grows. It is only a matter of time when a Dharma centre will be built to benefit the people in Philippines. Great news! love it.

You know that the Sakya tradition is the only tradition that is the closest to the Gelug tradition. Their tradition emphasizes debate and many of our lineages including the Vajrayogini Tantras is from the Sakya tradition. The Sakyas and the Gelugs have very close and mutual respect of each other Lamas and monastic tradition.

I know many High Lamas of the Gelug tradition would go Sakya Trizin to receive empowerments. On top of that, a few previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden is from the Sakya tradition - Sakya Pandita and Buton Rinchen Drub. Hence, Dorje Shugden was first propitiated by the Sakyas. It is really sad that Dorje Shugden is no longer propitiated and the Sakya Trizin even issued a statement against Dorje Shugden.
