DHARAMSHALA, June 24: Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today arrived back to his exile home town of Dharamshala from an extended visit to New Zealand and Australia.

Hundreds of Tibetans, Indians, and tourists lined up along the streets in McLeod Ganj carrying khataks, incense, and flowers in their hands to receive the Tibetan leader who will be turning 78 in a couple of weeks.

The Dalai Lama had left for his multi-city visit of New Zealand and Australia on June 6 to give a series of teachings and public talks.

Following his final day’s teachings in Darwin on June 23 on the Four Noble Truths, organisers of His Holiness’s visit to Australia reported that more than 50,000 people heard the Dalai Lama during his ten days in Australia in the course of 20 events.

“Of these, 25,000 heard him speak about compassion, kindness and secular ethics. Almost 10,000 people attended Buddhist teachings in Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin. He met with 2500 Tibetans, Mongolians and Chinese in different parts of the country. Online streaming reached a further 100,000 people,” Robert Keldoulis, chairman of the organising committee reported. “Funds raised from ticket sales and other contributions met all costs.”

Later this week on June 27-28, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to give his annual teachings to Tibetan youths in Dharamshala.

The teachings on "Opening the New Eye of Awareness" will be given at Tibetan Children’s' Village School in Upper Dharamsala from 8:15am - 11:30am IST.

Live webcasts of the teachings will be made available here. His Holiness will speak in Tibetan with a simultaneous English translation available.
