In today’s world, information is so readily available and we are just one ‘click’ away from getting the information that we seek. However, how many have considered whether the information they were fed is reliable and/or originates from a reputable source?

The reliability of one’s source of information is crucial, especially for the spiritually-inclined; it not only affects our future (in this life or the next) but also directly contributes to our eventual enlightenment. It is for this reason that within the Buddhist tradition, the authenticity of the lineage is one of the most important aspects for practitioners to understand and investigate when beginning one’s spiritual journey.

For centuries, the Gelug lineage masters have held their vows firmly. They are greatly respected until today, not only for their incredible deeds but for their incredible work in upholding and passing on the lineage for the benefit of future generations such as ourselves. It is from these masters’ works that one should quote, study and debate from, as their teachings and philosophies have been time tested to be reliable, accurate and proven to generate positive results in one’s journey to enlightenment.

In recent years, ever since the ban on the deity Dorje Shugden was imposed on Gelug practitioners by the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the Gelugpas have been split into two factions: traditional Gelugpas who choose to uphold the pure lineage that stems all the way back to Lama Tsongkapa; and the new Gelugpas who choose to follow the Dalai Lama’s bidding.

From this point forward, conflict arose as the Dalai Lama, who was also the political leader of Tibet at that time, enforced an iron-fisted ban while his Government in exile carried out their duties of intimidation to force Shugden practitioners to give up the deity. However, much of the forced conversion ended in failure as Shugden practitioners remained loyal to the Gelug lineage masters and understood that, while the Dalai Lama may have the political power and the means to carry out such a ban, spiritually he is not above the Gelug lineage masters.

The ban on the deity Dorje Shugden took a sour turn on an international scale as the issue became a target for disgruntled members of Dharma centres that engage in the practice of Dorje Shugden, such as the ex-New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) members. Like any large organization, it is not uncommon to have members leaving the dharma centre even as more new members join. While many have carried on with their lives, a handful of ex-NKT members who call themselves ‘survivors’ decided to tarnish the name of their ex-Dharma centre. And what better way to do so than to use the wrongfully demonized deity to achieve their personal goals of revenge.

With all the one-sided debates from the so-called “survivors” of NKT, to the setting up of a Facebook group to demonize the deity Dorje Shugden, what is their main motive for their actions online? It is clearly not a platform to establish understanding, tolerance or to help both Shugden practitioners and non-Shugden practitioners find common ground so that we may all live in peace. So it should come as no surprise that observers would eventually start questioning why a person who left the NKT would ignore every ethical code known to man today to suppress the religious freedom of hundreds of thousands of people whom they have no relations with.

Recently, a picture was circulated about an ex-NKT member, Carol McQuire, revealing inconsistencies (which is often the result of lies) in her ‘stories’ and efforts to cast ill light on the NKT and Dorje Shugden. It is obvious that these ex-NKT members are capitalizing on the Dorje Shugden ban to gain some mileage in their personal agendas; these alternative motives power someone like Carol and her group of friends.

Are inconsistent claims considered a ‘reliable’ source of information? Perhaps it is enough for some who wish only to listen to what they want to believe in regardless of the truth. However, what is shown above sheds doubt on Carol’s claims of how the NKT has hurt her.

So, why should we think twice about the information we receive from people like Carol and her group?

What evidence have they given to prove that Dorje Shugden is as harmful as they claim? If Dorje Shugden has never harmed any of them, then why claim that his practice is a harmful one? Just because the Dalai Lama condones that view?

It is without question that ex-NKT members may have a strong grudge against their old centres. However, Dorje Shugden is not the ONLY deity that is practiced in the NKT. So why vilify only this deity unless it is a convenient way to discredit the NKT?

Spreading hate towards Shugden practitioners is not just a ‘hobby’, it’s a job. With so much time spent on putting down another person’s religion through social media platforms, physical protests, and production of anti-Dorje Shugden propaganda, it would be no surprise to discover that Carol and those who are engaging in similar activities are indeed employed by the CTA. What’s more, the perks of this job earn you front seats at the Dalai Lama’s teachings, private audiences with the Dalai Lama and a little pocket money to get you by.

Carol’s view from her seat in a teaching by the Dalai Lama

A seat at this location would only be possible if an internal arrangement was made – a clear indication that Carol and people like her are CTA-employed and carrying out the CTA’s smear campaign against Dorje Shugden practitioners.

They certainly are not champions of inter-religious harmony. Some have vehemently expressed in public their dislike of Tibetan Buddhism and publicly proclaimed their adoption of Christianity. So why would someone like that be more interested in suppressing Shugden practitioners (which has nothing to do with her), instead of doing something for her suffering brethren who are plagued by REAL terror such as ISIS?

So after all this, who should we trust? Who can we trust? The answer is simple. Ask yourself: if this concerned your health, would you rather take medical advice given by Dr. Oz or the British Medical Journal? Think about it.

Dear readers,

This initiation of Dorje Shugden was conferred in Los Angeles in the 1980s onto Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen’s own students in Thubten Dhargye Ling. Prior to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche giving the advice, Geshe-la formally requested Kyabje Zong Rinpoche to give an initiation of Dorje Shugden. Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen was a very strong and devoted practitioner of Dorje Shugden and you can hear Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen’s voice at the beginning of the video.

After the formal request was made, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche himself, who is the overlord of all tantric mandalas, gave the profound initiation of Dorje Shugden to Geshe-la and all his disciples. And thereafter, Geshe-la and all his students practiced Dorje Shugden very strongly and very devotedly until the ban.

We have no reports of what happened after that.

Transcript :

— (Geshe Tsultrim Gyaltsen speaks in Los Angeles) —

My root guru His Holiness Kyabje Zong Tulku Dorje Chang Lobsang Tsundu Thubten Gyaltsen gives most emanation deity Gyalchen Dorje Shugden’s life entrustment initiation along with very pure and excellent biographies and stories, here is the voice record while giving the empowerment.

I, Geshe Tsultrim Gyaltsen student formally requested.

— (His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche begins to speak through a translator) —

After receiving this Dorje Shugden initiation, you have to do puja once a month. Also, it is necessary to follow the commitment, and you have to make a commitment with the lineage and with the order.

So that means, for example you [might] receive teachings from different traditions but mainly, your practice, your focus, your energy [should be put] into this lineage, the Gelugpa lineage.

If you have to or if you wish to do some kind of Dharmic activities with other sects of Buddhism, that is okay to do some kind of activities but your main practice or the principle practice, you have to make the commitment with this lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa. That’s why I mentioned before, you have to know and told that you should not take initiation if you are not sure. So once you take this initiation, then you have to make a commitment with the Gelug lineage and this is necessary not to mix up everything.

There are sometimes rumours that people say, “Oh, Shugden initiation is not…”, people say that it is not necessary to take Shugden initiation or, some people say Shugden is even not good protector.

That is not true. People who have this Shugden initiation and people who practice Dorje Shugden, those people have very great, successful meditation and practice. Even worldly measures, like worldly activities and business and job; everything becomes very successful.

Because it says Dorje Shugden is a Gelugpa protector, so some people they think when you say ‘Gelugpa protector’, they think we are narrow-minded and they think people who practice Shugden, they think they are narrow-minded and they think people who practice Shugden, they are sectarian. Actually, not sectarian…maybe because they are sectarian so they think that the people who practice Shugden are sectarian. People make up all kinds of stories and rumours, you should know that beforehand.

Some people, after taking the Shugden initiation and teachings, when they hear these rumours, they think…ignorant people, narrow-minded people make those rumours, and some people think that it is true and so maybe they give up the practice or they even don’t want to have this protector which is very bad, and that is not good for the person.

Actually it is up to you, whatever you want to do is up to you; your own life, everything is your own choice and your freedom and your own enlightenment, and what you want to do or not is up to you but I’m talking about what is good for you. You have to be very careful about what you do and you should not become gullible; you should not just follow someone saying “this is no good” and listen to all these stories from people. You should not change your mind, and you should always be aware and you have to make sure.

In Tibet, it doesn’t matter what people say and actually in Tibet, there’s many people who follow this and do this practice and actually, always there’s more and more people who do this kind of meditation.

So you have to know this, you have to be very sure or otherwise, later on, if people say to you “Oh, this practice is no good” and they make all kinds of stories and rumours…then if you give up, then it’s not good for you and then it will be a big mistake for you. Therefore you have to make sure that you keep this commitment and follow this commitment.

Because this is your own choice, and no one says you should do or you must do this and your own…like you choose to do this so you have to think about this very carefully. No one says you must do this without your own choice, and it’s like if you don’t want to and no one can say “you should do this or shouldn’t do this.”

(repeated from Part 1) Because it says Dorje Shugden is a Gelugpa protector, so some people they think when you say ‘Gelugpa protector’, they think we are narrow-minded and they think people who practice Shugden, they think they are narrow-minded and they think people who practice Shugden, they are sectarian. Actually, not sectarian…maybe because they are sectarian so they think that the people who practice Shugden are sectarian. People make up all kinds of stories and rumours, you should know that beforehand.

This is a very special protector and very precious, so therefore you have to do puja monthly.

You have to do the puja once a month, the prayer, long sadhana or long prayer, once a month but if, for example, if next month, if you know you’re going to be very very busy, if you know that you can’t do this, it’s impossible – then you can do the puja for next month, this month. The month before, you can do two [pujas] within two days.

If you don’t know how to read the sadhana, the prayers; if you cannot do the sadhana or you’re unable to do [the sadhana], then you also can ask the Lama, or monks or teachers to do this for you.

It is very important to know that you really want to take this initiation, and it is not just to come here and take this initiation because other people are taking this initiation. If you feel “I should do this and if I don’t do, then maybe I’m going to miss something”, that is the wrong idea. If you really want to make the commitment, then you should take. Otherwise you shouldn’t.

As I mentioned before, if you don’t know how to say the prayer and if you’re unable to do the puja once a month, then you can ask a Lama or your friend who knows this prayer and this monthly puja – you can invite them to your place, and ask them to do the puja.

Or if you can’t do [the puja] at your home, then even if it’s long-distance, like at some kind of monastery or where the Lama or the friend is – you can ask them, or him or her, to do this puja.

The reason I’m saying this again and again is because if you don’t follow just any kind of people, and if you’re not gullible, then it’s okay.

But it is possible sometimes that even a Lama or monk or some kind of teacher says “this is not right, and it’s wrong, and you shouldn’t do this kind of practice” – then it’s possible that you can change your mind. You think, “Because a Lama or some kind of teacher is saying this to me, maybe it’s true” – so people are very easily influenced and they can change their minds.

And one of the reasons because many Westerners don’t know the Dharma deeply, and all the significance and symbolism and the meanings. They also don’t know who is the right teacher and who is not the right teacher; they just go wherever there is a teacher or some sort of Lama, and they go and listen to all these teachings and that’s why. Westerners are generally very honest people, very direct, and very…they’re good people, they have a good heart.

Like in India or in Tibet, sometimes they…some people, they don’t practice Shugden but they say they are practicing Shugden. And some people, they do practice and they say something else. What people say and what they do is different, and so there’s kind of a corruption.

In India, some people mislead other people, other Tibetans. When some Tibetans ask them to do the Shugden puja, they will say, “Yes, I will do puja for you.” But after they go, they will do something else, and not the Shugden puja – they do another different puja. The people who asked them to do puja, they don’t know – if they can’t read, they can’t read and write – that these people say they are doing Shugden puja, but they don’t do it. They do something else and they just do what they want to do, and it’s very bad.

The reason why they do that is because in India and Tibet, householders will invite laypeople or monks to do this puja. It is a long puja and long day, so the household makes offerings like dana. These people are lying, saying they’re doing the Shugden puja but they don’t do. And they actually don’t like to do Shugden puja but in order to get some kind of benefit or money or some other reason, they say they do the pujas and it’s very very bad and very samsaric motivation.

Eventually those people, the householders who request for the Shugden puja will know or realise; they know that these people are not doing the right puja because they feel that it is not helping. It is not working because they are not doing the real puja. Eventually, they can feel intuitively because it is not helping, it doesn’t feel right. They will say they don’t want those people to do the puja, and will ask someone and make sure that the people who do the Shugden puja, are also practicing Shugden.

Here, we don’t have that kind of problems and there is no doubt. I’m just talking about general stories so that you have some type of understanding and everything.

Particularly in the early days of exile, a number of claims were made about the centrality of the practice of Dorje Shugden in Geluk practice, in particular, that the deity was the main protector of the Geluk.

This claim seems to be strongly linked to a doctrine connected with the 19th and 20th century charismatic Geluk teacher Phabongkha Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo, and quite possibly his main teacher Tagphu Dorje Chang who emphasised “one lama, one personal meditation deity, and one protector” as being the essence of Geluk practice. It will therefore be looked at in that context.

One Protector

Quite clearly, as the Geluk tradition was founded by Je Tsongkhapa in the early 15th century and the non-canonical protector deity Dorje Shugden did not manifest until 1657, that deity’s practice could not have been the main protector practice of the Geluk for the first 250 years of the tradition.

The main protectors of the tradition until then, and the plural is important here, seem to have been the following:

The canonical supramundane protector Karmaraja, locatable in the Yamantaka tantra cycle of the ‘father’ subdivision of the peerless yoga tantras and within that in the practices of Vajrabhairava;

The canonical supramundane protector Six-Armed Mahakala, locatable in the ‘Vajra Tent’ tantra text in the Heruka cycle of the ‘mother’ subdivision of the peerless yoga tantra division;

The canonical supramundane deity Vaishravana in the aspect of riding a lion and holding an umbrella in his right hand and a jewel spitting mongoose in his left.

Later, but still before the appearance of the deity Dorje Shugden, the canonical supramundane deity Palden Lhamo Magzor Gyalmo became a protector of the Geluk. A clear date for this has not yet been established but may well turn out to be after the vision of the 2nd Dalai Lama, where Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava instructed him to take Palden Lhamo as a personal protector. Certainly by the late 17th and early 18th century, her practice was well established across the Geluk. What is important to note here is that all these are supramundane and that they are shared in common with the other Sarma traditions of Sakya and Kagyu.

None is exclusive to the Geluk. From the surviving collected writings of great teachers in the Geluk tradition, there is documentary evidence of continued interest in the practice of all these deities as dharma protectors right up until the present day.

Some of them also have functions as institutional protectors. For example, Palden Lhamo is the chief protector deity for Ganden Jangtse college and the practice of Palden Lhamo is a chief practice of the protector chapel for Drepung Lhachi, i.e. the totality of that monastery.

Apart from a few, often oblique references criticising the practice by certain lamas, the first surviving documentary evidence we have of the widespread worship of Dorje Shugden in the Geluk comes from the first half of the 20th century and seems due to the activities of Phabongkha Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo.

The 3rd Trijang Rinpoche was collating material in his Labrang before exile, and managed to reconstitute some of his collection in exile, where he wrote quite extensively on the practice of Dorje Shugden. It may be that in the library of his Labrang in Ganden there are original dateable documents from before Phabongkhapa.

Much of the 3rd Trijang’s interesting work on Dorje Shugden is the collation of oral tradition around the practice of the deity. The weight of evidence so far available suggests that the practice of Dorje Shugden as either a worldly oath-bound protector or as an emanation of a fully enlightened being was mainly a private protector practice, with few institutions in the Geluk monasteries doing this as a regular practice.

One obvious example until very recently was the Bomra regional house of Sera Mey college. There were Dorje Shugden shrines in both Sera and Ganden monasteries in old Tibet and in exile, it seems that a three dimensional model of his mandala house had been built at Ganden.

But such is the loss of documentation due to the ravages of the cultural revolution that it is not at all clear how long Dorje Shugden shrines had been established in those monasteries in old Tibet or how well patronised they were in terms of numbers. Both clearly had wealthy sponsors but that does not necessarily equate to numbers.

The evidence that the practice of Dorje Shugden was the main protector of the Geluk simply does not stack up. It seems that for the Geluk as a whole and as an institution, the three then four canonical supramundane deities from the early days have remained the main dharma protectors of the tradition.

One Personal Deity

The one personal deity claimed as central for the Geluk is the practice of the aspect of Vajrayogini that comes through Naropa, known as ‘Naro Khacho’. The practice of Vajrayogini cannot be accessed except through an initiation into a Heruka deity.

Nowadays in Tibetan Buddhism, this seems mainly to be through the system of the five deity Heruka mandala in the tradition of Tilbupa. Looking at the tantra masters in the prayers to the lineage masters of this Vajrayogini lineage produced in the 19th and 20th centuries before coming into exile, Je Tsongkhapa is noticeable by his absence and it would seem that the practice came into the Geluk from the Sakya not through Tsongkhapa.

The issue of who does and who does not get included in lineage prayers is in itself a topic of great interest as until recently it was extremely unlikely that any given tantra practitioner of note really only had one master in the practice.

More likely he would have studied different aspects of the practice and received different transmissions and oral instructions connected with the practice from a number of tantra masters. This scattering of transmission lineages between teachers is often deliberate, being one way to ensure that transmissions are not severed by untimely death of the only holder.

If we look at the surviving documentary evidence of Tsonghapa’s collected works, it would seem that Je Tsongkhapa had a deep interest in the 32 deity Akshobhyavajra Guhyasamaja tantra system, the 13 deity Vajrabhairava system and the 62 deity Heruka Cakrasamvara system and made these three practices the core of Geluk tantra practice.

Again the plural is significant. It was of these three mandalas that Tsongkhapa had three dimensional models made in a special temple in Ganden, the seat of his tradition. It is these three practices that constitute the core of the ritual training in the two surviving tantra colleges of Gyu Toh and Gyu Med and constituted the core of the tradition at Sey Gyu dratsang at Sey in the Tsang province of old Tibet.

The transmission lineage of this last practice has been badly damaged and it is not clear whether it can be reestablished fully either in exile or in Tibet. But the other two tantric colleges have been successfully reestablished and continue to ensure the survival of these key tantra practices within the Geluk.

In the Geluk it is the recitation of these practices by the tantric monks from these two colleges that is considered the best way to consecrate a temple. Of the three tantras traditionally Guhyasamaja is held as the main practice, Vajrabhairava as a preliminary and obstacle removing practice and the 62 deity Chakrasamvara as an enhancing practice.

Vajrayogini in the form of Naro Khacho is a branch practice off the Cakrasamvara cycle of practices. The tradition holds that if the number of core tantric practices of Je Tsongkhapa is taken as four then the practice of Kalacakra should be taken as the fourth. If it expanded to five then the practice of Mahacakra Guhya(ka)adipati should be added as the fifth.

Again the weight of the evidence seems to show that Naro Khacho Vajrayogini never was the core or sole tantric practice of the Geluk, though much admired and taken up by some individuals as their main personal meditational deity. It seems that from very early on, the main or core personal meditation deity practices of the Geluk were 32 deity Akshobhyavajra Guhyasamaja, 13 deity Vajrabhairava and 62 deity Heruka Cakrasamvara.

Robert Thurman is promoted globally as a learned scholar and author of Tibetan Buddhism. He is also famous for being “personal friends” with the Dalai Lama. Which is more important then? The fact that he could be a strong authority of Buddhism in the West, bringing the many sacred, ancient teachings to millions in “the new world” or just getting on the good side of the Dalai Lama?

Since the ban on the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, Thurman has maintained a deliberately offensive stance towards Shugden practitioners, comparing them to the Taliban, and accusing them of being Chinese spies against the Tibetans.

In 2008, the Western Shugden Society wrote a letter to Robert Thurman urging him to produce proof to support his statement that Shugden people are sectarian, like the Buddhist Taliban and “working for the Chinese.” The full letter is reproduced below:

10th September 2008

An Open Letter
To Robert Thurman,

We the Western Shugden Society are writing this letter regarding your previous public statement that Shugden people are sectarian, naming them “the Buddhist Taliban”; and your recent public statement that the Western Shugden Society protestors are “working for the Chinese”.

As you know, Shugden people want to practice the Gelug tradition purely, without mixing with the Nyingma tradition. Because of this the Dalai Lama has said to Shugden people that they are sectarian. In truth, the Nyingmapa also want to practice their Nyingma tradition purely without mixing with the Gelug tradition; and it is the same for the Sakyapa and Kagyupa. So according to the Dalai Lama’s view, the Nyingmapa, Sakyapa and Kagyupa are also sectarian, but he only says that Shugden people are sectarian. In reality he is lying.

If you, Robert Thurman, are not yourself lying, then you must show your evidence to prove your public statements: that Shugden people are sectarian, “the Buddhist Taliban” as you named them; and that the Western Shugden Society is working for the Chinese. You should show your evidence publicly through the internet before 25th October 2008. If your evidence does not appear by this date then we will conclude that you have lied publicly and are misleading people.

Sincerely,
Western Shugden Society

By 25 October 2008, Thurman had not responded to the letter in any way. It wouldn’t be unfair therefore, to consider that he has indeed lied publicly and misled people by what he is saying.

Thurman is in an especially precarious situation as someone who has already garnered a reputation as a kind of authority in Buddhism. To make statements like this is not something to be taken lightly, especially when he has nothing to substantiate what he says.

Surely, as an academic, he should understand better than anybody else that when one conveys any statements as fact, the ability to produce supporting evidence is an indivisible part of the academic process. Above all else, as a respected academic, he can (and should) be held responsible for the accuracy and truth of whatever he communicates.

Thousands of people read his books, most likely with the view that it might help their understanding and practice of Buddhism. If he is reacting in such irresponsible and hurtful ways in relations to one of the most crucial issues of Tibetan Buddhism today, a shadow of doubt would surely be cast over the rest of his writings, talks and teachings too.

Further, as a Buddhist, he has a double responsibility to upholding the truth. He should be abiding by the most basic refuge vows of not lying and not using harsh speech by launching false accusations and defamatory comments at fellow practitioners. That is the least that can be expected of someone who was even a monk for two years and is considered a close friend of the Dalai Lama.

For all the unpleasant words he has issued against Shugden practitioners however, it is his silence in response to this open letter that has been most deafening. It proves, above all, the falsities of what he has been saying and a great disappointment that someone who is so highly respected in Buddhism could have such little empathy towards fellow Buddhists.

A very special boy was born in 1779 in Mongolia. The boy would come to be known as Ngawang Khedrup, one of the greatest Mongol teachers of the Gelug tradition. He received his novice vows in Urga (modern day Ulaan Bator) and was enrolled into Tashi Chophel Monastery.

When he was old enough, he traveled to Tibet and enrolled into Drepung Gomang Monastery to study the five great treatises. At the monastery, he studied under a line of illustrious teachers including the Fourth Jetsun Dampa, the Eighth Dalai Lama and the Second Reting Rinpoche, one of the earliest Gelug Lamas to embrace the practice of Dorje Shugden.

While he was residing in Lhasa, there were certain adversaries fueled by jealousy who accused him of breaking his monk vows. However, with his strong faith and reliance on the Protector Dorje Shugden, he was soon absolved of all accusations when he went to consult the oracle of Trode Khangsar. Interestingly enough it was Nechung to advised him to consult Shugden on this matter, stating that only Shugden would be able to determine the truth in such disputes. This in itself is a clear indication of Shugden’s enlightened nature, for it is only Buddhas who have the highest level of unbiased wisdom to discriminate between right and wrong.

After he completed his monastic studies and received his Rabjampa degree, he decided to return to Mongolia. Upon his return, the Emperor Daoguang awarded him with the title of the Supreme Chief Khenpo. At that time, he took up office as the Abbot of a Gelug college which was renowned for specializing in the practice of Hevajra in the 19th Century. It was called the Hevajra Practice College of Urga.

Throughout his lifetime, Ngawang Khedrub wrote extensively and his collection of works includes sadhanas, hagiographies of Jetsun Dampa, commentaries of the Lamrim and a text detailing the death process. He seemed to have an especially close connection with Maitreya – his writings on sadhanas seemed to be centered on the Buddha Maitreya, including a praise to Maitreya. The book Mongolia and the Mongolians even details that a statue of Maitreya, standing at more 120 feet, was apparently commissioned by Ngawang Khedrub.

In a short text on Panchen Sonam Dragpa’s hagiography, Ngawang Khedrup wrote that the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden arose from the omniscient wisdom of Panchen Sonam Drakpa. It is therefore not a surprise that one of his disciples, Ngawang Yeshe Thubten, became the author of one of the earliest Dorje Shugden ritual texts.

Later Gelug masters including Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche frequently quote from this same text, drawing a direct link between Dorje Shugden and Panchen Sonam Dragpa as a previous incarnation. It is thus from great Lamas like Ngawang Khedrub that the lineage and practice of Dorje Shugden continues to grow in Mongolia.

Tritul Tenpa Rabgye (1759-1815) is a native of Lithang, Kham. Even at a young age, Tenpa Rabgye displayed strong affinity for the Dharma. At the tender age of 2, he did something very unusual for someone of his age – to request the Vajravidarna purification from the abbot of Lithang Monastery, Phuntsok Gyato.

It wasn’t long before he was recognised as the reincarnation of another great lama, Trichen Ngawang Chokden. He was then ordained by the Panchen Lama, Palden Yeshe himself and started receiving initiations from him at the age of 10. Among the teachings he received at this time were the teachings and initiations of some of the highest and most complex texts of Heruka and Guhyasamaja.

He later entered Sera Je to further his studies, and went on to aquire a Geshe Lharampa degree. Before entering Gyumed Tantric College, he was given full ordination by Palden Yeshe. He took up residence in Shidey Samten Ling in Lhasa and became a teacher for Changkya Rolpei Dorje’s reincarnation. At age 49, Tritul Tenpa Rabgye gave ten cycles of essential transmission and teachings on the Lamrim to thousands of monks when requested by Sera Je to do so.

Tritul Tenpa Rabgye had a very huge influence on many Gelug Lamas, mainly due to his amazing collection of works. As he was an ardent practitioner of Dorje Shugden, so too became many Gelug Lamas who were influenced by him, especially those of Sera Monastery.

His student, Rinchen Wangyal, authored some of the earliest Dorje Shugden initiations and life entrustment rituals that are still available today. Lobsang Trinley Namgya, who later became a Tsenshab to the 10th and 11th Dalai Lamas is also counted among his disciples. Tritul Tenpa Rabgye also requested for one of the first few extensive rituals on Dorje Shugden to be written which was done by Dragri Gyatso Thaye.

To understand more about Tritul Tenpa Rabgye, we must look at his works. He has four volumes of teachings. The four volumes of collected works was made available when they were published in 1985 by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archive, Dharamsala. The first volume of works primarily consists of liturgies of many tutelary deities.

The second volume of work is more of a collection of answers to the questions that were presented by his many students that covers a variety of subjects. It also contains many short propitiations to various Dharma protectors, both enlightened and worldly.

The third volume discusses more advanced subjects such as the method for developing bodhicitta, as transmitted in the Wheel of Sharp Weapons (Dharmarakshita). The fourth and final volume of works contains even more propitiations, rituals and liturgies for many different yidams and protectors, including a sadhana for the 13-Deity Mandala of Red Yamantaka.

From here, we can see that Tritul Tenpa Rabgye was a very learned scholar and accomplished practitioner, and that he actively promoted and practiced Dorje Shugden. His time predates that of the 13th Dalai Lama, which means that Dorje Shugden’s practice was already strong and firm back then. This refutes the claims of many ill-researched modern day scholars who assert that Dorje Shugden was a little known practice that was popularized only by Pabongkha. They also wrongly accuse of him of making up details about the nature of Dorje Shugden.

On the contrary, Trichen Tenpa Rabgye is known to have written propitiations and prayers (included within his collected words) to several protectors, including Dorje Shugden and Setrap. In both cases, the protectors are referred to as emanations of enlightened beings, with Dorje Shugden associated as an emanation of Vajrapani, a view commonly held by many masters of the time. He also makes references in a praise to the fact that Dorje Shugden abides in the Dharmakaya, strongly indicative of the fact that he is fully enlightened for only Buddhas reside in this sphere.

In combination with works from other Lamas, Trichen Tenpa’s short though important writings on Dorje Shugden form a part of a very significant cannon of work about this Protector and his true nature as an enlightened Buddha. It is clear that many high Lamas back in the day could see the true nature of Dorje Shugden and that he was practised widely by lamas of the highest calibres of the Gelug tradition. It was commonly reputed that those who propitiate him only excelled in their spiritual growth.

Dear Friend in Dharma,

I am writing to share with you the life and works of very special, courageous and extraordinary Buddhist master, one we must always remember for his contribution to Dharma.

His Holiness Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal is a remarkable Buddhist teacher, who was chosen among many other elite scholars to become the Gaden Tripa – the supreme head of the Gelugpa school of Buddhism. The position of the Gaden Tripa was formed after the passing of the incredible Buddhist master and saint Lama Tsongkhapa. All the Gaden Tripas after him literally represent the presence of the perfect enlightened Master Lama Tsongkhapa here on earth.

In order to qualify for the position of a Gaden Tripa, one has to go through extensive training, study and practice for many years. A Gaden Tripa is not only a Buddhist scholar of the highest level, but would also have held the position as the lead chanter (umze) of one of the largest monasteries, be fully versed in all rituals and prayers, and served as abbot of one of the monasteries. This represents a lifetime of hard work, devotion and commitment to the Dharma and the teachings of the Buddha.

Gaden Tripas are so highly regarded that if the Dalai Lama is unable to attend any teachings, they are the only people who are able to replace the Dalai Lama and teach in his place. Actually, the Gaden Tripas hold a much higher and more sacred place within the Gelugpa school of Buddhism than the Dalai Lama. He is the supreme head of the Gelugpas. More can be read of the 101st Gaden Tripa’s life, works and accomplishments here:

- dorjeshugden.com/?p=6832
- http://www.trisurlungriknamgyal.com/about/

The 101st Gaden Tripa has since retired from his position a few years ago and is now known as Gaden Trisur. We have a special admiration for his courage and deep commitment to his practice. In recent years, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama instituted a ban against the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, but Gaden Trisur Rinpoche chose to continue with this practice, which he has been committed to his whole life. He has since left his monastery, Gaden Shartse, to join Shar Gaden Monastery which strongly maintains their worship of Dorje Shugden.

For many years, the Dalai Lama and his people have claimed that Dorje Shugden is evil and very harmful to Buddhist practitioners. Dorje Shugden practitioners are banned from attending the Dalai Lama’s teachings and grossly ostracized and mistreated. Shugden practitioners in India or Nepal, for example, suffer grave discrimination and are denied any welfare, just because of their spiritual beliefs. Monks who wish to continue their practice are expelled from their monasteries with absolutely no support. This is a blatant transgression of human rights and denial of religious freedom.

Gaden Trisur Rinpoche is a sincere practitioner of Buddhism who has been a devoted monk since childhood. Now, he is also ostracized because of his practice of Dorje Shugden. However, here is the contradiction: the Tibetan government and people say that the Gaden Trisur Rinpoche is wrong in his religious belief, he is bad, rebellious monk and not a supporter of the Dalai Lama. How can this be when his very position as Gaden Tripa was endorsed by the Dalai Lama himself? How can this be when he has devoted his entire life to the Dharma and shared with the world all the same teachings that the Dalai Lama shared? Does this mean that the Dalai Lama would pick the wrong people to hold such important positions? And that he has made a grave and terrible mistake within his own religious school?

Furthermore, in Gaden Shartse Monastery, they still have a throne to H.H. Gaden Trisur in their main prayer hall. Isn’t this contradictory? If you do not wish to associate with Dorje Shugden practitioners, then isn’t it confusing that you still keep his throne? A throne is so significant – it represents the person itself and means that you honor him and hold him highly. So does the monastery regard him as a bad, rebel practitioner? Or as a high Master still worthy of much respect and honor? Perhaps they just keep his throne there only to save their own reputation? Because dismantling the throne and erasing his presence from the monastery can only mean that they were wrong when they selected and endorsed him as a Gaden Tripa in the first place.

Today, H.H. Gaden Trisur Rinpoche resides in France where he has several centers to share the teachings of Dharma with Western practitioners. He lives humbly and simply, and though he is already 84 years, he still continues to teach, practice and bring the Dharma to others. Is this the sign of someone who is doing a “bad practice?” We do not think so.

There are hundreds of other high masters, monks and teachers like H.H. Gaden Trisur Rinpoche in the world, who have held this practice of Dorje Shugden sacred their whole lives. Now, they face terrible discrimination and attacks if they choose to continue their practice. It is not our intention to bring down anyone, nor to show any disrespect to the Dalai Lama.

Instead, we hope that by writing this, we can draw attention to the fact that Dorje Shugden practitioners are making huge contributions in Dharma and not “bad” or “evil” in any way, as the Dalai Lama’s people are claiming. It is our wish that by pointing out the many contradictions, Buddhists everywhere will think more deeply on the subject and realize that the ban on Dorje Shugden is simply not logical nor fair. We call for more quality, justice and fair treatment for Shugden practitioners and for true religious freedom.

With respect

Dear fellow Dharma brothers and sisters,

By now, the religious ban on the deity Dorje Shugden, as instructed by the Dalai Lama, has drawn worldwide attention. For the first time in Buddhist history, Buddhists are being excluded from Dharma teachings and social welfare, brutally attacked and discriminated against by their own Buddhist community, simply because of a spiritual choice they have made. Dorje Shugden practitioners everywhere are suffering from this unjust and illogical ban, which denies them the most basic human right of religious freedom.

It has come to our attention that the Tibetan-government-in-exile (now called the Central Tibetan Administration) has been sending letters to monasteries, institutions, organizations probing if certain monks or individuals are practicing Dorje Shugden. We find this act appalling and extremely despicable. No civilized government in the world would write letters to their religious institutions or organizations interrogating them about the private practices of individuals and which deities they choose to pray to. Only a witch-hunting government from the Middle Ages would abuse their power to do something like this to intimidate its own people.

One of the very few things that Tibet is famous for throughout the world is its religion – Tibetan Buddhism. However, instead of preserving and supporting the monks who dedicate their lives in the monasteries to study, practice and teach Buddhism, the CTA goes the opposite way to suppress and persecute the very Sangha that made Tibetans famous in the world. Instead of writing letters to encourage, congratulate and support these monks who have dedicated their whole lives to Dharma, excelled in their studies and made the Dharma grow in the world, the CTA writes letters to interrogate, instill fear, suppress and ostracize the good Sangha and Dharma practitioners who did nothing but practice Dharma sincerely and only have good thoughts always in their mind.

These monks teach Dharma, conduct pujas, raise sponsorship and gather support to bring huge benefits to the monasteries. These monks build new monasteries, establish spiritual monastic communities, renovate chapels, erect new statues, feed monks, build hostels and help the lay community. When the Tibetans first fled Tibet in the 1950s to seek refuge in India, these monks did everything they could to reestablish their religious practice and community in this foreign land. Despite the many obstacles of language, unfamiliar territory, climate and separation from their Sangha, families and even their teachers, they built up the monasteries again from scratch. They have even helped the governments to set themselves up again and rebuild the Tibetan exiled community.

Now, the CTA turn against these very same monks, claiming that they are bad and evil for practicing Dorje Shugden. They claim that by continuing their practice of Dorje Shugden, they are traitors to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan cause and accuse them of being Chinese spies. These monks are expelled from their monasteries, denied any welfare or rights and even have to suffer physical attacks from people who call themselves Dalai Lama devotees. Is this fair?

By doing so, the CTA effectively nullify all the contributions that these monks have made to the Tibetan exile community and the new Tibetan Buddhist monastic communities throughout India. All that the monks have done – the sponsorship they have raised, the teachings they have given, the institutions they have helped to build – are forgotten, only because of one religious choice they have made.

We call for a different response. If the CTA wants to nullify all those contributions by ostracizing monks who they deem “bad”, “traitorous” and “evil”, then the CTA should also return all the contributions, all the money, the roofs, the tiles, the floors, the bricks, the food, the furniture, the fixtures, the statues, the offerings, the thangkas, the books, the buildings etc. to all the monks who sponsored and gave all these things to the monasteries. If the items given have already been used up (such as food, building materials or study materials), then the equivalent amount of money should be returned. Then, it is a fair game.

If the monks who are being ostracized and discriminated against by CTA are really that bad, then it follows that their contributions and everything that they have given before must also be bad and stained. These monks are being punished for their practice of Dorje Shugden because it is deemed evil and impure. If they are so bad and evil, then surely all their actions, contributions, sponsorship and support are based on a foundation that is also bad and evil. If the CTA and all the monasteries wish to remain so “pure” and “good” then shouldn’t they also remove and return all these “impure” things and sponsorship also? Why remove the impure person but keep the impure things given by them?

Even buildings and infrastructure being used by the CTA today were first supported, sponsored and built by Dorje Shugden Lamas. Now, the CTA make accusations against these Dorje Shugden Lamas and even issue “wanted” lists against them… even though they are sitting on and using the very things that the these Lamas gave them and build for them! Is this fair? We don’t think so. We find this ungrateful, very unkind and seriously hypocritical.

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche was instrumental in helping to rebuild the Tibetan exiled community. Trijang Rinpoche also physically donated so much to the monasteries – a majority of statues that are still in Gaden Monastery today are there because Trijang Rinpoche sponsored and donated them.

Today, the young incarnation of Trijang Rinpoche has had to leave his monastery in India and move to America because he suffered a tremendous number of threats and physical attacks while he was still living in Gaden Monastery as a child. He is disliked and viewed with great suspicion by Dalai Lama supporters and the CTA, simply because he was a Dorje Shugden practitioner in his previous life, and continues to be in this incarnation. Do you see the hypocrisy in this? He is so viciously hated by so many of his own Tibetan people, but at the same time, they are all very happy about using the many things he has built up for them. The very statues that the monks continue to pray to were sponsored by Trijang Rinpoche. If Trijang Rinpoche is really so bad and evil for his practice, then why pray to the statues that he made and donated? The Tibetans and the CTA should return every last cent that Trijang Rinpoche contributed in this and previous lives.

They should also return all the teachings that Trijang Rinpoche so compassionately gave to thousands of people. If he can make such a grave and terrible “mistake” to practice something “bad” and “evil” like Dorje Shugden; and if he is such a “bad”, “traitorous” and “evil” person for doing this practice, then all his other practices and teachings must also be tainted, wrong and impure.

Within the Gelugpa lineage, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche was the sole and main source of teachings, which he generously shared to many, many, many other monks, Lamas and practitioners, including the Dalai Lama. Today, 99% of Gelugpa practitioners in the world can trace their lineage and practice back to Trijang Rinpoche. But why keep practicing his teachings and lineage when he is being ostracized, attacked and hated for his worship of Dorje Shugden? How can we say that his Dorje Shugden practice is wrong and evil but his Lamrim teachings are incomparable, as the Dalai Lama himself has said? If we accept someone as our Guru, we should also accept all his teachings as pure and correct – if not, why accept him as our Guru in the first place, to teach us everything we need to get to enlightenment?

If Trijang Rinpoche was wrong about Dorje Shugden, then there is a high chance he can be wrong about all the other things he has taught us. So if you wish to be totally sure that you are “clean” and completely disassociated from Dorje Shugden practice, then you should return EVERYTHING that you have received from Lamas like Trijang Rinpoche – from the physical and material sponsorship he gave, to the teachings and practices he gave. If you wish to cut off from Dorje Shugden practitioners, then honor your word and do it all the way – remove and return everything completely. Keep yourself totally “pure” and “untainted”. Have some integrity and disassociate yourself completely. Do not pick and choose what you keep or give up, to suit your own conveniences.

At the most basic human, ethical level, even women with dignity return their wedding rings to their husbands if the marriage ends! From a spiritual, ethical point of view, this is even more important – shouldn’t we return things to people who we believe to be evil? Why take the risk of having something so evil and bad in your life? And why keep things that were given by someone you disagree with and are so strongly against? Again, isn’t that very hypocritical?

Some may argue that they are keeping things given by Dorje Shugden practitioners for their benefit, to help them collect merit. This is completely untrue and illogical. If you really care about the welfare and benefit of Dorje Shugden practitioners, you should not force them to give up their practice in the first place; you would not apply such terrible pressure on them to take oaths against their lifelong practice; you would not expel them from monasteries and then deny them any welfare, support, help or access to Dharma teachings. If you really were concerned for Dorje Shugden practitioners, you should be even more kind to them, more patient, welcome them all the more to Dharma teachings so that they can learn what they are doing “wrong” and make any necessary changes. There is so much contradiction and hypocrisy in the way that Dorje Shugden practitioners are treated.

We urge you to think carefully about how much damage the ban has created. It is ruining lives and causing so much hurt to Buddhist practitioners everywhere. It also creates tremendous harm to the people who are enforcing the ban – it creates a terrible image that this is how cruel and unkind the Dalai Lama’s supporters are. The world will look at Tibetan Buddhists and see how uncompassionate, unforgiving and hateful they are towards their own people. It will cause Buddhism to be destroyed from within our own community.

Please think about how hypocritical the situation has become. Think about the logic we have pointed out in this letter. It is not meant to criticize or harm, but to show you clearly that the actions carried out because of this ban do not make any sense and completely contradict the teachings of the Buddha. Also, this is not how a modern 21-century government should act. How will you ever progress in the world and gain independence for your country if you cannot even be kind and united to your own people?!

We request you to reconsider your actions and urge you to lift this unnecessary, hurtful, damaging ban. We beg you to please practice kindness towards all sentient beings, which include Dorje Shugden practitioners.

Yours sincerely,

Who is Dorje Shugden?

Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri, the Enlightened Buddha of Wisdom. He arose as a Dharma Protector about 350 years ago especially to protect Nagarjuna’s Middle View, as taught by Lama Tsongkhapa. He is often considered to be a Protector of the Gelugpa lineage but actually, he protects all sincere Dharma practitioners equally.

What is a Dharma Protector?

A Dharma Protector is a being who manifests in a particular form with the particular function of averting obstacles and providing conducive conditions for our spiritual practice. There are two kinds of Dharma Protectors: Enlightened Protectors who are emanations of Buddhas, and unenlightened / worldly Protectors.

What is the difference between an Enlightened Dharma Protector and a worldly / unenlightened Protector?

The difference between an Enlightened Dharma Protector and a worldly Dharma Protector is that the former is a Buddha whereas the latter is not. Many of the Dharma Protectors who are most commonly relied upon are Enlightened Beings, such as Dorje Shugden, who is an emanation of the Buddha Manjushri.

Enlightened Dharma Protectors’ principal function is to protect our Dharma practice, not to help our mundane affairs. Famous Enlightened Dharma Protectors are Palden Lhamo (an emanation of Tara), Six-Armed Mahakala (Avalokiteshvara), Four-Armed Mahakala, Kalarupa and Dorje Shugden (Manjushri), and Setrab Chen (Amitabha).

The most famous of the unenlightened Dharma Protectors is Nechung / Pehar. These unenlightened Protectors are usually worldly beings who were oath-bound by Lamas to stop causing harm and to serve and protect the Dharma instead.

Why are Dharma Protectors so important?

When we are engaging in spiritual practice, obstacles and distractions will arise that may disturb our practice. Thus, it can often be difficult to fulfill our commitments or engage purely and deeply in Dharma practice.

Dharma Protectors are a very important part of our practice as they help to remove immediate obstacles to our spiritual progress. They also provide conducive conditions for us to accomplish our spiritual aspirations smoothly. For example, they can help to avert physical problems such as illnesses, accidents, financial difficulties, and bring about the resources we need such as sponsorship, resources and spiritual friends to support our practice.

Dorje Shugden has removed obstacles and created the conditions for the extraordinary growth of Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings, and most importantly, the realization of those teachings. Lama Tsongkhapa’s doctrine is now spreading swiftly to countries throughout the world and touching the lives of many who have been able to learn the teachings and put them into practice to effect great transformation in their lives.

Why does Dorje Shugden look so fierce?

In Buddhist iconography, wrathful expressions denote a very fast and powerful energy. It is likened to the “fierce” but compassionate energy of a mother who shouts at her child if she sees him playing with fire or about to harm himself.

Dorje Shugden’s expression of fierceness is symbolic of his very swift and efficacious ability to destroy obstacles for Dharma practitioners and come to our aid very quickly. Underneath the fierceness, everything that Dorje Shugden does is out of total compassion.

Is Dorje Shugden a spirit or demon?

No, he is neither a spirit nor a demon. Quite the opposite. He is an emanation of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, and is therefore a fully Enlightened Being.

Has Dorje Shugden emanated as other forms before?

Yes, prior to arising as a Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden manifested as many renowned and highly respected Lamas including:

The Indian Mahasiddha Biwawa

Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen (one of Lama Tsongkhapa’s closest disciples who built Gaden Monastery)

Panchen Sonam Drakpa (an erudite scholar and debate master, whose philosophical texts are still being studied in the monasteries today)

Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen (a highly respected Lama who was often compared to the 5th Dalai Lama).

What are the other forms of Dorje Shugden and what do they do?

There are five principal emanations of Dorje Shugden:

Dorje Shugden, the principal figure who represents consciousness. He bestows wisdom and shows the way to higher attainments.

Vairochana Shugden or Shize, who represents form. He purifies negative karma and obstacles.

Ratna Shugden or Gyenze, who represents feeling. He brings increase of all that is good.

Pema Shugden or Wangze, who represents discrimination. He brings peace of mind.

Karma Shugden or Trakze, who represents compositional factors. He helps to overcome delusions and combats the strongest negative, harmful energies.

What are oracles, and how are they related to Dharma Protectors?

Oracles are specially trained people who can take trance and serve as a medium for Dharma Protectors. This means that the essence or energy of the Dharma Protector can enter and use their bodies as a vessel to speak to us directly. Therefore, we can receive enlightened and accurate advice to make the right decisions to support our spiritual path in our daily lives.
