The highest-ranking lama of Tibet, the 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu officially visited Denma Gonsa monastery on the 19th July 2017. This massive Dorje Shugden monastery is situated in Zhidoi County, Qinghai province of China. In addition, the Panchen Lama also visited a nursing home in the county to grace a charitable event and blessed the elderly residents there.

The Panchen Lama visited the monastery following an invitation by the young incarnate lama of the monastery, Denma Gonsa Rinpoche. The Panchen Lama also visited a Sakya monastery, Jyeku Dondrub Ling within the same county as well. As the Panchen Lama’s car approached Denma Gonsa Monastery, Khampas and local nomads on horseback held out prayer flags and khatas to welcome his arrival. On top of that, locals also had several youths ride yaks on both sides of the car to escort the Panchen Lama towards the monastery.

In accordance with Chinese protocol, the approved itinerary of the visit included the Lama Tsongkhapa prayer hall, where the world’s largest bronze Lama Tsongkhapa statue is enshrined. He performed a Rabney consecration ritual to bless the massive Lama Tsongkhapa statue. Following this, the Panchen Lama paid homage at the reliquary stupa containing the relics of the previous incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche.

After that, he moved on to the main prayer hall of the monastery to give a Dharma discourse and blessed the public in a traditional manner by placing his hand onto their heads. The crowd was fortunate to have an audience with this great lama, a qualified Geshe who has studied under some of the most prestigious masters of our time. Not only that, but he has received and steadfastly kept the vows of a monk, with no stain on his reputation as a pure monk, and has received many tantric empowerments, practiced the teachings and engaged in many retreats. Even without this title, the breadth and depth of his practice would qualify him as someone more than worthy of bestowing blessings and transmissions. One does not need to be a high ranking lama to be a great teacher of the Buddha’s sacred teachings. After a brief lunch break at midday, the Panchen Lama conferred a long life initiation in a tent pitched on the Tashitan fields just outside of the monastery. Panchen Lama returned to Beijing the next day.

This successful visit cements the close relationship that the 11th Panchen Lama has with Denma Gonsa Rinpoche and this indirectly confirms his approval of Dorje Shugden as an authentic practice and the high lamas, Geshes and sincere practitioners who worship this powerful deity.

Addendum

Whether people accept him as the real Panchen Lama does not make any difference. He is a human, an individual, an ordained monk, and he has received teachings from many erudite masters. He has received tantric empowerments, engaged in retreats, does the prayers; he does what any other Buddhist monk does. So by virtue of being a monk and someone who has practiced for many years, he is a qualified receptacle, teacher and disseminator of the Dharma. Therefore whether you accept him as the Panchen Lama does not matter. Thousands of monks in the monasteries over the 1,000 years did not have titles but they disseminated the Dharma very well.

So do not judge whether he is doing Dharma correctly based on his title but on his merits. This is a democracy. This young man who has been labelled ‘Panchen Lama’ has held the vows of a monk, lived in a monastery, and studied under the most qualified and greatest masters of Tibet, especially of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, for many years. By all accounts, he is a very qualified Geshe. This Geshe just happens to have the title ‘Panchen Lama’ and happens to be the highest ranking lama in Tibet, sanctioned by the Chinese government. Besides the Panchen Lama can emanate in hundreds of forms simultaneously. It is the choice of the Chinese who they want to sanction, and install as their spiritual leader. It is their choice. Nobody should or can take away their country’s choice.

The current Panchen Lama was invited to Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s monastery in Kham, Tibet, China. Housing thousands of monks, it is one of the biggest monasteries that practises Dorje Shugden. The Panchen Lama, the Chinese government and the Tibetan people in Tibet endorse this monastery and support it. As you can see here in the series of pictures, the Panchen Lama went to this monastery to give his personal support to the young Denma Gonsa Rinpoche who is studying to become a Geshe himself.

One of the highest Gelugpa lamas, Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s name is synonymous with that of a master having achieved perfect attainments and an exemplar of devotion to the pure lineage founded by Je Tsongkapa. Denma Gonsa Rinpoche studied under Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang and Kyabje Dragri Dorje Chang from whom he received the complete transmissions and all the necessary empowerments that bestowed upon him the responsibility and role of an essential lineage holder.

So highly accomplished was Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, that in his vocation as a Dharma master, he not only represented the three Great Gelugpa Seats of Ganden, Sera and Drepung but also Reting Monastery and other distinguished monastic colleges around Tibet. Such a feat could only be accomplished by a lama who is universally regarded by the Gelugpa establishment as being a most erudite and highly realized master. Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s monastery, featuring huge statues of Lama Tsongkapa and Dorje Shugden, is regarded by all as a fortress of the Gelugpa tradition that preserves all the lineage teachings in their purity.

Given Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s widely acknowledged precision and faultlessness in his grasp and mastery of the lineage teachings, his opinion of Dorje Shugden carries significant weight and should be considered by anyone seeking the truth. In a speech to his students, the 19th Denma Gonsa Rinpoche spoke with fervid commitment of how he received the teachings and practice of Dorje Shugden from two of the greatest Gelugpa masters, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso and Kyabje Dragri Dorje Chang, from whom he also received Dorje Shugden’s ‘life-entrustment’ (sogtae).

Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was unwavering in his decision not to give up the practice of the Protector until the end of his life. It is steadfastness such as Rinpoche’s that detractors of Dorje Shugden have pounced on, to wrongly portray Dorje Shugden as the cultish practice of an extreme-fundamentalist sect of the Gelugpa school. Many have spread lies that it is because Dorje Shugden practitioners have surrendered their lives to Shugden and are bound by the life-entrustment vow (which they say is against the refuge vows to the Three Jewels), that they are unable to part with the Protector practice. Such misinformation has been spread on purpose to paint Dorje Shugden in a negative way.

The reality is that ‘sogtae’ is not surrendering one’s life to Dorje Shugden at the expense of one’s refuge vows to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Dorje Shugden ‘sogtae’ resembles ‘rje gnang’ which directly translated means ‘subsequent permission’. In other words, it is an initiation into the Protector practice which requires the initiate to abide by certain commitments such as the fulfillment of monthly pujas to the Protector, and to request Dorje Shugden to protect the practitioner from harm and perform activities on behalf of the practitioner to increase merits and provide dharmic as well as earthly endowments. Commitments are in fact a very common feature of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Moreover, such life-entrustments are common in other protector practices and it is not an extraneous feature of a ‘cult’ practice that those who attack Shugden worship have attempted to induce people to think. For example, the Fifth Dalai Lama performed similar life-entrustment rituals to the protector Dorje Barwa, a life-entrustment ritual to Nechung was found amongst the works of Thuken Dharmavajra, a sogtae to Dorje Setrab was written by Gendun Dhargye, and life-entrustment rituals to Tsiu Marpo and Four-faced Mahakala were found to have been regularly performed by Jamgon Kongtrul.

In fact, there is no requirement whatsoever for any Dorje Shugden practitioner to take ‘life-entrustment’ vows. And so clearly, as Denma Gonsa Rinpoche said in his speech, there are many lies and deceptions designed to malign the practice of Dorje Shugden.

In his speech, Denma Gonsa Rinpoche also tells his students that they should maintain guru devotion even at the cost of their lives, meaning to say that they should never go against their gurus nor abandon the practices that their gurus have given them, for to do so is tantamount to breaking samaya with their gurus. Again, critics of the Dorje Shugden practice have often distorted this resoluteness and labeled it as fanaticism that is characteristic of an extremist cult. Far from being a cult characteristic, firm commitment to the guru is innate in the pure practice of Tsongkapa’s lineage (and indeed Vajrayana Buddhism). Je Tsongkapa himself wrote in The Foundations of All Good Qualities, the following instructions:

Then the foundation for the two attainments,
Is keeping the pure vows and commitments,
Having found unfeigned conviction is this,
Bless me to keep them at the cost of my life.

The importance of keeping strict commitments to the guru is common knowledge to all Vajrayana practitioners. Ironically, some lamas who received the Dorje Shugden practice from their gurus but are now advocating forsaking the Protector are in fact very familiar with the dangers of breaking samaya. For example, Lama Zopa who received the Dorje Shugden practice from Lama Yeshe has taught his students that:

Guru devotion is the quickest way to collect the most extensive merit, the means to achieve enlightenment… but having a pure mind of guru devotion, with no negative mind arising toward the guru – which is very heavy negative karma – is also very important.

In addition:

A negative attitude, such as a thought of giving up respect, even just thinking, ‘What is the use of this teaching?’ creates negative karma; one breaks the samaya vows. A kind of pollution comes, and whatever you offer becomes negative and can invite sickness or obstacles. So, I think, the most important thing is keeping samaya, not doing any wrong thing, not letting heresy arise, having negative thoughts, or losing faith. It is with that thought in mind that Denma Gonsa Rinpoche advises his listeners to see him as their lama and receive teachings which will benefit them, and cautions them that if they view him in a negative light (for instance, as a ghost), there will be nothing he can do for them and their wrong view may hurt them.

This short and very important speech by the most holy Denma Gonsa Rinpoche is an invaluable treasure that demonstrates with clarity why it is extremely harmful to force, coerce or trick practitioners into parting with their gurus and their protector practice, and similarly why those who have disowned their teachers and Protector have wrought very heavy damage unto themselves. Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s speech is also a clarion call for all Shugdenpas to persevere and like Rinpoche, be unmoving in their devotion to the guru and the Protector.

Chogdong Monastery (or Chagdrung Monastery) in Kham, Tibet celebrated their 9th Annual Monlam Chenmo festival in July 2014. The festivities centered around a vast open plain, with huge tents erected to accommodate the thousands of monks and lay people who gathered to celebrate this auspicious occasion.

This particular event was organized by H.E. Nyedru Rinpoche, a close student of the previous Denma Gonsa Rinpoche. Through his hard work and dedication in spreading and upholding the lineage and practices entrusted to him by his teacher, Nyedru Rinpoche is widely regarded as an important and respected Dorje Shugden lama in his district of Yushu (or Yulshul), Tibet.

The Monlam Chenmo Festival or “Great Prayer Festival” was established by Lama Tsongkapa in 1409, to commemorate Shakyamuni Buddha’s performance of miracles in Shravasti. Commonly known as the third of Lama Tsongkapa’s four great deeds, Monlam Chenmo celebrations have been observed every year since, to pray for the long life of attained masters from all traditions, for the growth of Dharma in the minds of all sentient beings, and for world peace.

As seen from the images below, Monlam Chenmo is still traditionally practiced and upheld in a grand manner in Tibet. The occasion is marked by extensive communal offerings by both ordained and lay people, to overcome obstacles to peace and generate conducive conditions for all to live in harmony. Recently, another grand Monlam Chenmo celebration was also held in Chatreng, with over 400,000 Dorje Shugden practitioners gathering in Trijang Rinpoche’s Sampheling Monastery. Undoubtedly, Dorje Shugden practitioners make up a significant segment of the Gelugpa tradition, despite the efforts of the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration to claim otherwise.

Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, Nyedru Rinpoche and many more who are tirelessly turning the wheel of Dharma for the sake of all sentient beings. The enthronement of the 20th Denma Gongsa Rinpoche

31 July 2014 marks a day of rejoicing as the world celebrates the return of the great Dharma master, H.E. Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, and his enthronement in Gonsa Monastery in Tibet. The previous Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was a highly respected Lama who chose to remain in Tibet during difficult times. Through his great efforts and sincerity in spreading the Dharma, the previous (19th) Denma Gonsa Rinpoche became one of the most respected Lamas, by both Tibetans and Chinese.

The previous Denma Gonsa Rinpoche entered clear light in 2005, but the local populace have not lost faith nor forgotten the great deeds of this master. Over 200,000 Dorje Shugden people from Tibet and around the world (which is more than the number of Tibetans living in exile) attended the enthronement ceremony of the 20th Denma Gonsa Rinpoche on 31 July 2014. The pomp and grandeur of the ceremony was especially moving in the light of the fact Tibetans are not wealthy. For them to offer so much towards their lama and his enthronement ceremony, which was held in the traditional manner, indicates that Tibetan culture and faith in their religion remains strong in Tibet.

The fact this enthronement ceremony was held also shows that Dorje Shugden’s practice is not bad or evil, as claimed by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA; the Tibetan leadership based in Dharamsala). Denma Gonsa Rinpoche relied upon Dorje Shugden until the day he died, and spread his practice among all of his students. Thus the sheer volume of Dorje Shugden devotees in attendance clearly shows that Dorje Shugden’s practice is flourishing in Tibet. A Demographic Survey of Tibetans in Exile, released by the Planning Commission of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in 2010 estimates only 128,014 Tibetans living in exile. One can therefore conclude that the CTA’s claims that Dorje Shugden is only practiced by a minority is a falsehood.

It is indeed a joyful occasion that Dorje Shugden practitioners in Tibet are allowed to welcome the new incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, one of our lineage’s lamas. We rejoice that yet another Dorje Shugden lama has been officially enthroned. Through the blessings of the lineage masters and pure aspirations from previous lives, may this incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche continue his previous lives’ works to preserve and spread the holy teachings of Je Tsongkhapa, bring benefit to the people of Tibet and China, and remain with us for a very long time.

An enthronement of a Rinpoche is the formal recognition of a particular child or adult to be the incarnation of a particular lama or Rinpoche from a previous life. This unmistaken child is found by a search party that is formed by the close students of that lama, who are usually part of the Labrang private office) of that lama. The selection process is a particularly arduous task of examining prophesies, dreams and divinations of greatly clairvoyant masters like Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the Dorje Shugden oracle and sometimes close disciples of that particular lama who have very clean samaya (guru-disciple relationship). Then, based on those observations and conclusions, candidates are shortlisted, interviewed and observed.

During the interview, one of the tests involves the candidates identifying personal objects that used to belong to their previous life. These personal objects are displayed along with other items, and the candidate is asked to pick out his personal belongings. The candidates are shortlisted based on behavioral observations and if he picks out the right objects.

The unmistaken incarnation of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was recognized by four great masters of the Gelug lineage:

1. H.H. the Panchen Lama
2. H.H. Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche
3. H.H. Pabongka Rinpoche
4. The Dorje Shugden oracle

Pre-Enthronement

The crowd arrives

Thousands of people, many travelling great distances, made their way to the monastery grounds a few days ahead of the actual enthronement. The number of white tents increased daily, covering the plains like a small city. Because of the sheer volume of people wishing to pay homage to and receive blessings from the new incarnation of Denma Gonsar Rinpoche, the monastery had to hold the ceremony in the open air in order to accommodate everyone. Remember that the number of people in attendance – 200,000 Dorje Shugden practitioners – grossly outweighed the total number of Tibetans in exile…

People from all over Tibet, China, and other parts of the world travelled to Denma Monastery as early as one week before the enthronement date

Much credit has to be given to Denma Gonsa Rinpoche’s Labrang (personal household and office) who held the ceremony, for their organizational skills. Sangha members came from all over Tibet, to witness this historic occasion – the return of their lama, and the enthronement of his new incarnation

In his previous life, Denma Gonsa Rinpoche was a strong proponent of Dorje Shugden’s practice, a fact which clearly has not harmed or prevented his incarnation from returning

The monastery is no stranger to elaborate festivals like this. They had previously hosted a Grand Prayer Festival which was attended by 40,000 to 50,000 Dorje Shugden devotees and students of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

Contrary to the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) insistence that Dorje Shugden is a minority practice, the pictures here clearly show that Dorje Shugden’s practice is flourishing in Tibet and growing all over the world, in China, Mongolia as well as Europe. As more and more Dorje Shugden lamas come of age and begin to spread the Gelug teachings, the CTA’s claim that Dorje Shugden is a minority practice begins to look increasingly illogical. How can Dorje Shugden be a minority practice when thousands of people all over the world happily and faithfully turn up for teachings and blessings, carrying Dorje Shugden images and prostrating to Dorje Shugden statues?

As you can see, in areas where the CTA do not have jurisdiction, Dorje Shugden practice is growing and hundreds of thousands of people continue to propitiate the blessings of this Buddha, like they have always done. In areas where the CTA has control, for example Dharamsala, there is much religious strife and disagreement. We can thus logically conclude that any schism and disharmony in Tibetan Buddhist communities arises from the CTA’s unnecessary and illegal ban on Dorje Shugden. Whether Dorje Shugden is a minority practice (as the CTA claims) or not, everyone should be given the freedom to worship as they like. This freedom, which is absent where the CTA has control, is what gives rise to the religious harmony, understanding and respect.

His Holiness Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche

Denma Gonsa Rinpoche is a great senior lama and student of both Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Pabongkha Dechen Nyingpo. He transmitted the pure teachings to his district people and 600 monks of his monastery.

This great Monastery houses a 12 story high main image of Je Tsongkapa and has a beautiful Chapel to Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden is the main Dharma protector of this vast Monastery in Kham.

The current Kyabje Pabongkha Choktrul Rinpoche incarnation travelled often to this Monastery to receive rare teachings, practices and commentaries from Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche.

Kyabje Denma Gonsa Rinpoche passed away last year. He told his main attendents before passing away that a few boys will claim to be his incarnation. But the real incarnation will recognize himself. He will recite the Root tantra of Guhyasamaja from memory perfectly. Only enthrone this boy as my real incarnation.

Left (white) houses the Largest Tsongkapa statue in the world being 31 meters or 101ft. The newly built building ( yellow) to the right houses the largest Dorje Shugden statue in the world. It is a Dorje Shugden chapel with a Dorje Shugden statue which is 6 meters or 18 feet tall

The beautiful stupa that enshrines the remains of Denma Gonsa Rinpoche. This powerful tulku has already taken rebirth and will be recognized soon. He will be recognized in a place that will be in Tibet and safe
