He stepped down for 3 years so that the young 14th Dalai Lama could be educated by the elderly Taktra Rinpoche, the fifth Reting Rinpoche's very own teacher. This also showed that Taktra Rinpoche has flawless morals and has kept his vows perfectly to be able to teach the Buddhist way of life and grant ordination vows to the Dalai Lama. If Taktra Rinpoche is flawed he could not have given ordination vows to the Dalai Lama. Also, whatever, he taught would not be good either, and the Dalai Lama's education would be flawed too. So, by extrapolation, if Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the junior tutor of the 14th Dalai Lama was wrong, then the Dalai Lama would have received wrong teachings. Then, whatever teachings that the Dalai Lama gives would be flawed too. How very interesting.
