Buddhist Monk Hangs Himself in South Delhi
« on: May 19, 2014, 02:21:29 AM »
Wonder why this Buddhist Monk was depressed over the defeat of a close relative in the recent Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections to warrant suicide by hanging.  He is known to Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, and has a political background in Arunachal Pradesh.  Anyone know the full story behind this?

New Delhi: A 47-year-old Buddhist monk from Arunachal Pradesh allegedly committed  suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his sister's house in Vasant Kunj in South Delhi.

The body of T G Rimpoche was found hanging from the ceiling fan at about 1 am on Saturday by his sister.

Police was immediately informed and the body was later sent for post mortem.

In a suicide note recovered from a diary in the room, Rimpoche has mentioned that he has committed many sins and that God would not forgive him, police said.

It is, however, suspected that he was depressed over the defeat of a close relative in the recent Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections. Senior police officers chose not to disclose the name of that relative.

Police are, nevertheless, speaking to his family to ascertain any other possible causes and the suicide note has been sent for a handwriting test and exact translation.

Rimpoche is said to be known to Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, and has a political background in Arunachal Pradesh.

He had arrived at Delhi from his state on May 2 and was staying at his sister's place. His family has told police that Rimpoche kept silent the whole of Friday and stayed alone in his room after hearing about the defeat of his relative. They, however, are not sure if that contributed to the cause of his extreme step.

He also suffered from sleeping disorder for which he was undergoing treatment for the past one year and that had left him troubled, the police said, adding that no foul play has been ruled out.

It is hard to believe that any monk would commit suicide, more so a Rinpoche or a high lama of Tibetan Buddhism. Notice that in his suicide note he "mentioned that he has committed many sins and that God would not forgive him". This statement is highly suspicious as basic buddhist tenets reject the concept of the creator God. Certainly, Buddhist do not seek "God's" forgiveness. I suppose that is why the Indian police has sent the suicide note for handwriting test and proper translation.
I can't help to think that he was murdered. Sigh!

Doesn't make sense. True Buddhists do not commit suicide much less a Rinpoche. 'committed many sins and that God would not forgive him' is a not the kind of statement made by Buddhist as  eyesoftara said "buddhist tenets rejects the concept of creator God". Doubt if the police will be able to find anything and if, at all connect to the political defeat of the relative.

I agree. Buddhists do not commit suicide let alone a Rinpoche!!! I really wonder about the authenticity of the facts stated. In Buddhism, committing suicide is an act of killing which creates the cause of the person to go straight to hell. I won't be surprised if Rinpoche was murdered and set up to look like he committed suicide. The following is an article from The Arunachal Times.

"ITANAGAR, May 17: One of the greatest Dharma Guru of the Gelugpa Sect of the Himalayan Buddhism, His Eminence the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, better known as TG Rinpoche, left for his heavenly abode at New Delhi on 16th May. His untimely demise filled his millions of devotees in India and abroad with deep sorrow and grief. He was recognized as reincarnation of Lama Thupten Jampal Wangchuk by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, reports DIPRO, Bomdila.

Late TG Rinpoche was born on 19th August 1967 at Nesar Zhungpatse, Shyro village in Tawang. He started his education at Drepung Loseling Monastery, South India. A doctorate in Buddhist Philosophy, T G Rinpoche served as President of the Himalayan Buddhist Culture Association, New Delhi and worked towards the development of mutual relationships between various cultures and religions of India and endeavoured towards preservation of flora and fauna to maintain a peaceful environment of co-existence of all sentient beings. He was the Minister of State, Industry, Textile and Handicrafts and Cabinet Minister of Tourism, Chairman of Advisory Council for Tourism Development (ACTD), Chairman, Arunachal Pradesh Hydropower Development Corporation, (APHPDC), Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh during his different tenures respectively. He held the position of Chairman, Department of Karmik & Adhyatmik (Chos-rig) Affairs, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh before he left for the heavenly abode. He assumed the great responsibilities of developing the religious shrines and cultural practices and activities in the Mon region. Numerous monasteries, educational centres, stupas and cottage industries established by him are testimonies of his accomplishments. His noble efforts in providing education to destitute, giving shelter and food to homeless and old age, providing free education and upbringing to orphans received global accolades. He got international recognition as an excellent social worker and fully accomplished spiritual master. He received several national and international awards for his tireless efforts and social works for the well being of people around the world. He became the first ever Buddhist representative from the entire Himalayan region to attend the Millennium Union Nation World Peace Summit at the United Nations Assembly Hall.

With his untimely demise, a pall of gloom has descended over the whole of Mon area. People still find it hard to believe. But they take satisfaction and recourse in the hope and belief that, he would soon reincarnate to lead them on the righteous path and from darkness unto light & to carry on the good deeds for the welfare of the people.

His mortal remains would be flown from Delhi to Bomdila on 18th escorted by Pema Khandu and Phurpa Tsering; both MLAs. The mortal remains would be kept at Gontse Gaden Rabgyeling Monastery, Upper Gompa for a week or so in order to facilitate the hundreds and thousands of devotees to pay their homage and bid adieu.
A meeting of all the HODs and representatives of the Buddhist Culture Preservation Society(BCPS), Mon Bomdila was called this afternoon by DC AK Singh to finalize the whole process and to render every possible help from the district administration and police."

Agreed! True Buddhists do not commit suicide as they  know the repercussion by doing so.Based on Klein's comment, the late TG Rinpoche was an reincarnated Lama and an accomplished spiritual master who achieved numerous accomplishments. I do not believe a great person like him just commit suicide! There could be something  more to this, murder perhaps?

I do not TG Rinpoche will commit suicide when a Rinpoche reincarnate which means He had a mission to  do which is spreading Dharma and Buddhism, i guess that is His main motivation and priority to come back again. I believed TG Rinpoche won't careless about who won the election and the suicide note which very much sums all up that this could be a foul play. Buddhist do not ask for 'God' forgiveness because we do not believe in that concept.

Good try, i believed the truth will be out very soon...

This is weird! Especially the part "he has committed many sins and that God would not forgive him".

For a Rinpoche and a monk to commit suicide and then leave a note like that is really weird. From what Klein posted, Rinpoche is a learned monk and therefore for this to happen is highly unlikely.
I do hope that the police will find out the cause of death and assure everyone it is not what it seems.

This article is quite contradicting. Why would a Buddhist monk commit suicide? And to say that he has committed many sins, well, who have not been sinning? Why is he so afraid that God would not forgive him? All of these statements raised so much suspicions. To a Buddhist, ending this life would not erase any sins that have been committed in this life and all previous lifes. I hope the police would do a thorough investigation as it is hard to believe a Buddhist monk would take his own life based on the reasons stated in the suicide note.

I find this article very strange indeed. Because a Tibetan monk, let a alone a Rinpoche would not say that God would not forgive him. It may however be a translation from the original note, which may be in Tibetan or Hindi for the matter. My own teachers have told me that some words in Hindi or other Indian languages can be used synonymously for god or Buddha. But I guess Press Trust of India may publish another article once the analysis is completed.

Very unlikely that a Buddhist monk would commit suicide. Buddhism doesn't teaches one to take their own life. Even if he has committed many sins do not mean that he will commit suicide.
I hope the police will really look into this matter seriously and reveal the truth as soon as possible.
