Title: Yongyal Rinpoche detained at airport
Post by: thaimonk on January 14, 2015, 01:38:29 PM
BREAKING NEWS: January 14, 2015 Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche has been detained at Bangalore airport. It is believed it has been manipulated by the CTA. Read the update by Kundeling Rinpoche here:

To the attention of whomsoever it may concern,

A well known saintly figure and Guru to thousands of Shugden followers, worldwide, Yongyal Rinpoche, who is on a visit to the settlement of Bylakuppe, India, to impart a series of teachings, is believed to have been detained in the Bangalore international airport.

By all accounts, it is learnt that the Lama had procured a 10 years valid entry visa for India. He even acquired the appropriate permit required for the settlement areas. Nevertheless, it is learnt that he is being held in the aforesaid airport on the grounds that his visa to enter India is invalid!Unconfirmed sources have claimed, that the immigration official concerned has stated, that the private office of the Dalai Lama has urged the MOH not to permit the lama entry into the country.

If this turns out to be true, as all suspicions with regards to the Dalai Lama’s animosity towards Shugden celebrities – even if they are apolitical and do not even speak out against the God king – is a known fact! This would be scandalizing and preposterous for the ministry concerned to assist in the dirty work of the Tibetan leader.

The said Yongyal Rinpoche had paid a successful visit at the settlement areas 3 years back. His visits unlike the Dalai Lama’s, carries no such motives or agendas, related to political indoctrination, heightening of hateful sentiments or even that of consolidation of the latter’s position! Everybody knows this saintly lama to be living a spartan life of pure simplicity and humility.

It would be sad, an outright discrimination and a grave injustice. Were a purely spiritual figure like the latter would be turned out of the country. Merely to gratify and keep the god king amused and docile in Dharmsala!

It must be pointed out, that thousands are allowed to visit India and even the restricted settlement areas from TAR region of China. Throwing all caution to the winds about the entry of potential Chinese spies. It is now documented and widely known, that the God king routinely spews venom and encourages Tibetans visiting from across the border to obstruct and exterminate the growing numbers of Shugden followers, by whatever means required.

Responding with hateful vengeance towards the animosity regularly expressed by the Dalai Lama and his cohorts, has never been present in the orientations of the great Shugden adhering stalwarts.

A great nation like India that embraces all cannot fall victim to hearsay and the whims of a singular disgruntled individual. Just because a fraction within the ministries feel the Tibetan leader to be a valuable can-card for political proxies!

_______________

Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche was travelling from Taiwan to Serpom Monastery in South India to give a series of teachings, initiations and oral transmissions. When Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche arrived at the Bangalore airport and his passport was scanned, it came up as invalid. He was detained from that. The others such as the attendants and entourage had no problems. All their visas were applied for and approved before even getting onto the plane. He is still being detained as we publish this article. We will update as we get more news along the way.

I have been in touch with Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche's student, Ven. Achok Rinpoche.  I believe at this point, not much can be done as they are running out of time.  So, they are sending Kyabje Rinpoche back to the US.

Nevertheless, prayers and a concerted effort will help!  When Rinpoche returns to the US, we will have to do something and bring this injustice before the Indian Embassy and representatives here in the US.

What is wrong with that immigration officer at Bangalore airport? Or is CTA at it again? Denying entry to a 67 year old monk? What harm could the old monk do except to teach?

Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche was in Serpom Monastery Opening Ceremony in 2011 that was presided by His Excellency Shri S.A. Ramdas (Honorable Minister for Medical Education from Health & Family Welfare Department and Mysore Distric Minister), Shri Venkatesh (Member of Legislature Assembly) with participation by local authorities and Chairmen of Indian organizations.

Out of the blue, 3 years later, he is being denied entry into India. Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche is one of the illustrious Dorje Shugden lama. It doesn't require rocket science to conclude why he was denied entry.  The actions of CTA is beyond conscience and belief. They not only violate human rights but the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni.  The sheer hubris by CTA (they obviously dont believe in karma) and blatant disrespect shown here for a teacher so highly revered is disgusting. This boorishness reflects poorly on their teachers and leader.

What is the precedence for stopping an esteemed monk from his dharma work in India?

Lets hope this is just a technical glitch and Kyabjye Yongyal can be on his way to turn the wheel of dharma.

The nefarious intentions of the CTA could be in play here which is worrying especially when Kyabjye Yongyal could be isolated and by himself, and whether he is with medication if he has any known medical conditions.

Hope to hear more about Yongyal Rinpoche's situation ASAP.

Latest Update:

Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche travelled from Los Angeles to Taipei, Taiwan to confer some teachings. From Taiwan he transited through Hong Kong to get to Bangalore. From Bangalore he was suppose to head to Serpom Monastery four hours by car away to confer a series of teachings. Now the latest news is that detention of Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche in Bangalore airport is over and he is being deported. Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche is getting on a plane to return to Hong Kong.

Luckily Yongyal Rinpoche had been released from detention. He being an elderly person with diabetes certainly should not be subjected to this kind of harsh treatment. CTA is really heartless ! They are too keen to show off their iron fists and thus forgotten even a basic human value.

With this detention and deportation, Shugden followers will be even more motivated to defend and fight for their right and freedom to practice Dorje Shugden.

May this bad incident be transformed to a force that will eventually bring down the ban.

It is indeed a very sad news. Now that Yongyal Rinpoche's personal attendance has all passed the immigration, is there anyone assisting Rinpoche when He is on His way back to Hong Kong?

Rinpoche is in India to confer a series of teachings. Now that He is deported, many are not able to receive teachings and initiations. I wonder how much bad karma CTA has collected by stopping others learning Dharma. :(

I pray there is a turn to this situation and practitioners can continue to receive the teachings.

I am so sorry to hear that this has happened.  I will say mantras so the karmas will clear.  The Dalai Lama is truly a most horrible human being, I will say Vajrasattva and Shugden mantras for his karma to clear as well.

Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche went to India to give teachings which will benefit many people, lay as well as ordained. How sad His Holiness is not able to do so because of politics. Religion should not be mixed with politics. I hope the obstacles will be removed and His Holiness will still be allowed to travel to where he was going to teach the precious Dharma.

Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche is the current abbot of Serpom Monastery in Bylakuppe and has transited back and forth so many time, this was taken 3 years back in Serpom Monastery, i do not see the logic for the detention of Yongyal Rinpoche, and i trust that HE assistance made sure of all the visas and documents is up to date for the travel.

"Imparting the Dharma to future generations of Dharma teachers is the most fundamental and effective method to ensure that the Dharma remains whole and unbroken and Yongyal Rinpoche is doing exactly that."

The above was extracted from an article on this website entiitled : "A Tribute to Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche".

These words show what Yongyal Rinpoche has been consistently doing his entire life after completing his Geshe Lharampa degree at athe age of 32 and after completing his studies of tantra. In the same article, his wisdom and knowledge of dharma  has  been described as follows :"Staying true to Lama Tsongkapa’s unsurpassed lineage, Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche is thus a living treasure vase of Dharma wisdom and the primary holder of the precious Ganden Oral Tradition".

It is thus preposterous that this genuine upholder of Je Tsongkhapa's lineage, who has been consistently turning the wheel of Dharma(which he does so currently in the US where he resides), had been detained on arrival at Bangalore airport and stopped from entering India. He had come there to give teachings in Serpom Monastery, where he had been its first abbot from 2008!!

How on earth can a holy Gelug  monk, entering the country to turn the wheel of Dharma of Je Tsongkhapa's teachings, be refused entry and deported, even when his visa was in order and had been vetted and cleared before he left his last port of call? What mischief was at play here to thwart the turning of the wheel of dharma, and deprive 100s of Sangha of Serpom Monastery from receiving precious teachings and iniitations from a renowned Lama? CTA working against the spread of Dharma? Politics versus Dharma and Dharma loses to politics?  How sad!

An Open letter to the Indian Prime Minister to be shared far and wide:

January 16, 2015

His Excellency Naraendra Modi
Prime Minister of Inida
South Block
Raisian Hill,

New Delhi – 110011, India

Your Excellency,

I was deeply disturbed after learning this week that your government has refused entry to Yongyal Rinpoche, a Tibetan spiritual master into the country. He was detained by immigration officials at Kempagowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 15, 2015 night and deported to Hong Kong. He had procured a valid 10-year entry visa from India and even acquired the appropriate permit required for the Tibetan settlement arears.

Yongyal Rinpoche is a well-known highly respected Guru to thousands of Shugden Buddhist followers, worldwide. He is currently based out of the US and is the founder of the Lamrim International Dharma Center in California. He was supposed to go to Serpom Monastery settlement of Bylakuppe, south India, to give a series of Buddha’s teachings, initiations and oral transmissions to the thousands of Shugden Buddhist followers living all over the India.

Your Excellency, the Tibetan Shugden Buddhist followers living in India have faced over 20 years of struggle and suffering against formidable power of the Dalai Lama within the mainstream Tibetan exile community in India. In year 2008 these Tibetan people were persecuted and ostracized from the mainstream Tibetan exile community in India by the Dalai Lama and his organization simply because they believe in the protector deity Dorje Shugden and continue to worship in accordance with their tradition. There are also many local Hindu Indian nationalist people who believe that this protector deity Dorje Shugden is a manifestation of Lord Ganapati.

Yongyal Rinpoche’s teachings and his blessing are very important and desperately needed not only to help ease the suffering of these people, but also to promote healing and harmony within the Tibetan community. He had paid a successful visit at the Tibetan settlement areas 3 years back, and his visit carries no motive or agenda related to political indoctrination. Everybody knows this lama to be living a Spartan life of pure simplicity and humility.

His visit draws thousands of people, not only from all over the India, but also from abroad, which brings much business to the local Indian people and their communities. The denial of his entry to the country not only hurts local businesses that depend on travelers, but also injures the reputation of India’s highly respected democratic system, cultural values, traditions of tolerance, composite culture and secularism.

I humbly request you look into this matter and intervene in the interest of fairness and religious freedom.

With Respect.

"Now the latest news is that detention of Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche in Bangalore airport is over and he is being deported. Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche is getting on a plane to return to Hong Kong." as posted by DS Star.

Glad to read that sentence. Luckily it didn't take too long for the Indian Immigration to do the right thing in a difficult situation. If it is true that the HH the Dalai Lama did get someone from the Tibetan Administration to exert influence to deny Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche entry into India, the poor Indian immigration officers did the right thing by releasing and deporting.

This again may be a game of tit for tat by the CTA for what was perceived as elbowing by Shugdenpas when HH the Dalai Lama was denied entry into South Africa. At least, South Africa denied visa at the early stage, unlike this situation where a poor old monk is accused of having "invalid visa" when others in the entourage has 'valid visas' although all visas were applied and approved at the same time. If it is true that influence was exerted here, it is akin to 'hitting below the belt' in boxing terms.

"The Dalai Lama said South Africa Government is a bully by denying him visa to South Africa."

At the end of the day, as Pope Francis said (even if in reference to Charlie Hebdo)  "you cannot insult the faith of others".

Please Dalai Lama, bury the hatchet and allow Tibetan Buddhism to return to it heydays.

Dorje Shugden followers had suffered immeasurable pains either spiritually, physically and mentally from the ban on Dorje Shugden practice.  Now Dalai Lama, CTA and the "unexpected" new ally the Indian Immigration are adding on more damages.  We are witnessing the stop of the turning of Dharma Wheel!  And this is coming from Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism.  This is really getting into the nerves of every Dorje Shugden follower or any Buddhist.  It is too much already!  How could Dalai Lama stop Dharma from flourishing? Dalai Lama has created so much destruction.  How much more harm would Dalai Lama do to Dorje Shugden, Dorje Shugden lineage and His followers?

This is indeed a sad news. The pressure given to Dorje Shugden practitioners have been upgraded. Last time I used to hear is Shugden followers but now direct to Shugden great master. I hope this is just a simple issue about Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche visa and not other intentionally purpose. Otherwise it is really too much as the way they implementing the ban on Shugden practice.

I wish they realise the world is watching. The justice grow naturally from the heart. The world will make the judgement on the ban.

What is the consequence of stopping a dharma master like Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche from spreading and teaching the dharma in a monastic institution?

This is sending out "waves" and "direct message" to all Dorje Shugden practitioners in the world, that the CTA has run OUT of options to stop the support for DS. Will stopping an erudite Dorje Shugden dharma master from turning the wheel of dharma make DS practitioners give up hope?

No! We will not give up hope for the ban to be released.

We should all write similiar letter to the Indian Prime Minister to protest the deportation of Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche:

His Excellency Naraendra Modi
Prime Minister of Inida
South Block
Raisian Hill,
New Delhi – 110011, India

January 17, 2015

Your Excellency,

On January 15, 2015, His Holiness Yongyal Rinpoche was travelling to India, where he was scheduled to give teachings in Serpom Monastery, South India. Yongyal Rinpoche had the proper documents and permits necessary to travel to the Tibetan settlement. However on arrival at Kempagowda International Airport in Bengaluru, Yongyal Rinpoche discovered his visa had been invalidated for no good reason. He was denied entry into India, detained for many hours and then deported to Hong Kong.

We have strong reason to believe Yongyal Rinpoche’s visa was invalidated due to manipulations by the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, H.P. If it does turn out to be true, it deeply disturbs us that such manipulations of the Indian judicial system are possible. Because of Mahatma Gandhi's struggles, India is an independent nation today. Her government and ministers have a duty to protect this independence and should not take orders or suggestions from other governing bodies like the Central Tibetan Administration.

Denying Yongyal Rinpoche’s entry to India, thanks to Dharamsala’s input, was a terrible decision because:
1) It makes India and her government look unreliable and backwards when her ministers will ban people or take away their travel documents because of their faith and religion.

2) It makes India look weak to onlookers and other governments. For example, Dharamsala has now learned that with a big enough incentive, the Indian government can be encouraged to think in one way or another
3) It harms the country’s reputation with locals and foreigners. Yongyal Rinpoche’s teachings had been planned many months in advance and hundreds of people had made arrangements to travel to India to receive these teachings. These people would have booked hotel rooms, gone to eat in restaurants and spent their money in the local communities on offerings and souvenirs. Thanks to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the local Indian community have been deprived of this income. Tourists will also return to their home countries and let everyone know about the bad, disappointing experience they had in India.

This incident with our Guru Yongyal Rinpoche also disturbs us because it means anyone living in India cannot rely on the law to protect them. Tibetans have been in India since 1959, when we were granted the right to live and conduct our activities. Amongst these first Tibetan refugees were Dorje Shugden practitioners who have never broken Indian law or shown any disrespect to the Indian government. We have always cooperated with the Indian authorities.

We have also always relied on the Indian judicial system to protect us. As guests of India, we follow the laws of the Indian government. This includes Article 25 of the Indian constitution which guarantees religious freedom. Yongyal Rinpoche’s detainment and deportation was obvious discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners who, in this instance, were denied our religious freedoms to learn from this great Guru who poses no threat.
On closer examination, there was no valid reason to prevent Yongyal Rinpoche’s entry into India. Gurus like Yongyal Rinpoche do not pose any threat to Indian security. They lived in India for many years without any problems, until they were forced to leave due to pressures from Dharamsala against their religious faith. These Gurus have not shown any history of violence or law-breaking activities. Furthermore, the Indian intelligence service had months to investigate the background behind these teachings which were publically announced. If indeed it was found that Yongyal Rinpoche posed a threat (which he does not), security for the teachings could have been arranged instead of deporting the Guru and creating such a bad reputation for India.
This incident has created a lot of unnecessary debate and damaged India’s reputation as a democratic system, which traditionally values tolerance, progress and modernity. In the interest of upholding these principles, and in the interest of religious freedom, we humbly request you investigate and intervene in this matter.

With respect,
Dechen Tulku

Mother India has so much history and culture to back it i the 21st century. It does not need to follow or adhere to advice given by the CTA. Why would anyone want to do that? CTA is representing an idea of a Free Tibet, they don't even have a country to call their own.

India do not need to take CTA's words under advisement, being a nuclear superpower and biggest democracy in the world.

Such a shame to read of CTA playing a role in instigating the deportation and inconveniences to an old monk whose sole purpose is to spread the Buddha's teachings. It really baffles me though, that India, being home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and the most populous democracy in the world, could be influenced to make this drastic move.
This is clear proof that Shugden believers are not paid by and associated with China as accused by CTA to create more hatred; and gain support from the exile tibetan community.  If  Shugdenpas are really associated with China, then the Indian external minister will organise a great welcome party to H.E Yongyal Rinpoche as Indian official always do when Chinese official arrived in India.
From this incident, I hope more eyes would be opened to more false accusations made by the CTA.

This is complete childs play by the CTA, Yongyal Rinpoche has been entering India for many years a great scholar and teacher he has given many teachings and initiation. A highly esteemed Lama the current abbot of Serpom Monastery in Bylakuppe what valid reason is there for the Indian immigration to deny him access into the country? India has always been a place which respect all religion and shown greater respect for anyone who has given their life to their religion like monks and nuns. This is really appalling for the CTA to have come up with a move like that.

If they have faith in HHDL, faith in the dharma, faith in their beliefs why must they go through the trouble to deny Yongyal Rinpoche from entering the country? Despite practicing DS, Yongyal Rinpoche still gives many valuable teachings from Buddha Shakyamuni why stop him from doing that? The prediction of Buddha Shakyamuni stating that Buddhism will degenerate, the main contributor is the CTA because of that and they will bare high consequences from karma in the future.

Its true Tenzin Malgyur I agree with your statement that this is clear proof that Shugden practitioners are not backed by China if so they would not have any problems as such.

This news is extremely heartbreaking to read. I cannot imagine the condition Yongyal Rinpoche had to endure with his diabetic condition in the airport. And worst with so many students from all over the world congregating in India to receive teachings from Rinpoche.

Yongyal Rinpoche definitely had a valid visa as it was told that it was revoked. And it is highly suspicious that CTA is behind this out of vengeance or desperation. Whatever reasons they may have, it has shown their true colours on their intention and yet at the same time they say there is no ban. If there is no ban, why such action is necessary?

And if they (CTA) used the excuse that China is behind Yongyal Rinpoche, then the rest of India is also with China since the trade agreement were signed between these both countries recently worth USD 20 billion for India infrastructure. Whatever CTA accusation is, it will not make sense to anyone who can read. CTA must understand that the world has changed and they too should revolved with time. Their audience is no longer just villagers but the world. And we are looking at them and their conduct

1. It took Rinpoche 1.5hrs from Taiwan to Hong Kong, furter 5.5 hr from Hong Kong to Bangalore, then further 6 hrs flying back to Hong Kong.  So it was total 13hrs on the plane, not counting the waiting time in Hong Kong airport during transit, trouble time in Bangalore, and further 1hr+ passport query time in Hong Kong airport after back when Hong Kong Immigration found Rinpoche got problem in India. Isn't it too much for an elderly close to 70, with not that a very good heath condition?  Surprisingly, Rinpoche just smiled heartfully when seeing us greet him in the airport!

2. If CTA claim China is behind Rinpoche, lets' count how many times Rinpoche been back to China since his 2nd exile in late 90s: 2.  Compare total 2 times of Yongyal Rinpoche's back to China after 1998 with his counterpart, Gosok Rinpoche's back to China every year(at least recent years), if that's an valid reason, who has really got China's 'support' and 'financing'?  The 'Dorje Shugden team' or the 'HHDL team'?

It is a shame that such an illustrious Lama was denied entry into India.  Yongyal Rinpoche has entered many times to give teachings and initiations, so why denied him the right to enter. It is so sad that Yongyal Rinpoche had to go through this stupidity from the CTA who is all out to hurt, harm, and destroy all DS practitioners.  Yongyal Rinpoche is diabetic and his health has to be taken into consideration. And because of this stupid action, Yongyal Rinpoche had to endure the difficulties and inconvenience. What about all those who came far and near to receive Yongyal Rinpoche’s teachings. How can the dharma flourish when highly attained Lama is deprived of their rights to teach?

CTA actions are getting more and more ridiculous yet they claim there is no ban. If there is no ban, why take such drastic actions!!!!

This evening, I had the opportunity to visit Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche (Rinpoche has been back in the US for a little over a week now) and also offer dinner to Rinpoche.  Since Rinpoche's detainment and deportation from India, a lot of people have expressed their thoughts and views on the incident.  So, given this opportunity, I asked Rinpoche his thoughts on what had occurred.  Kyabje Rinpoche's reply was sheer evidence of Rinpoche's level of attainments.

As a starter, I asked him whether it was correct to say that in part, it was the lack of merit and bad karma on the part of the students that the students in India were not able to receive the teachings, since it is said in the sutras and tantras that it takes many lives of accumulating merit before one even has the good fortune to receive sutric teachings, let alone tantric teachings.  Rinpoche said in terms of the law of cause and effect (karma), it is true that the students had planted a cause that led to the effect of their not being able to receive the initiation of the three yidams (apparently, Rinpoche was going to bestow the grand initiations of Yamantaka, Heruka, and Guhyasamaja, along with other tantric deities such as Vajrayogini and Chittamani Tara, etc.).  BUT, and Rinpoche made special emphasize on the next point, it is even more so that the guru (referring to himself, Yongyal Rinpoche) had committed an error or cause in the past that created these obstacles preventing him entry into India.

Sensing it was time to have dinner, Rinpoche, his attendant, and I got into the car.  On the way to Soup Plantation (Rinpoche is a vegetarian and every now and then, likes the variety of salads offered at Soup Plantation), Rinpoche proceeded with the discourse.  He said, some people might now question the Dharmapala Dorje Shugden and wonder why Dorje Shugden couldn't eliminate the obstacles.  But Rinpoche said, sometimes, the karma of a person (referring to himself) may be so heavy that even the Buddhas cannot help.  Rinpoche then referred to the story of how Buddha Shakyamuni had tried to save his own Shakya clan from destruction by King Virudhaka.  Even when the Buddha and His chief disciple Maudalyayana tried to save 500 Shakya people in his begging bowl, he later found that they had become a pool of blood water.  So, it is definitely not that the Dharma Protector did not help.

Finally, Rinpoche advised that when such incidents and obstacles occur, we need to develop altruistic thoughts.  We need to contemplate and meditate that when these types of unfortunate incidents befall us, we hope it has instead alleviated the suffering and karma of someone else or in general, our mother-like sentient beings (classical tonglen meditation).  When one takes this approach and does this meditation, no anger will arise and one will be at peace and ease.

It is no wonder Rinpoche was able to maintain good spirits while he was detained in the airport!  Rinpoche used this entire incident as a moment to reflect on his own karma (humility) and also practice tonglen (compassion).  This is truly the difference between an enlightened buddha versus a confused human sentient being.   ;D

If this rumor is really true, It will be very upsetting to know that one person's jealousy and intent to stop the spreading of teachings He does not like such as that of Dorje Shugden has deprived many people hundreds of people from receiving teachings from such a High Lama.

It really make me quite upset that the Dalai Lama is the mastermind of such an act which is totally unacceptable.

It is depriving one of the freedom to travel as well as the freedom of speech.

What happened to what the Dalai Lama said in the past about working together in order to achieve world peace?

Another instance of how Shugdenpas suffer from persecution by an authority (CTA) who are powerful in their relationship and influence with Governments of the world.

How are Shugdenpas to be heard, only by protests and attention from a compassionate media who stands for human rights and religious freedom.

How hard it is for Shugdenpas to even have the right to be noticed.  But this will make this suppressed and oppressed group of devotees more faithful to Shugden as they are acting out of choice and desire for freedom.
