Title: Trijang Rinpoche's daily routine as a student
Post by: hope rainbow on October 01, 2010, 04:06:22 PM
Someting to reflect on.
I came across a description of Trijang Rinpoche's (previous incarnation) daily routine as he was not even 20 years old, a description made by Trijang Rinpoche himself.
Here it goes:

Early dawn, recitation of:
-   Ganden Lhagyama
-   Expression of the Names of Manjushri (and AM AH RA BA TSA NA DHI mantras, of course)
-   Yamantaka sadhana

Between recitations and breakfast:
-   Memorize at least one and a half page of a philosophical text

After breakfast:
-   Debate in the courtyard (even during the coldest winter days)
-   Study under Gan Rinpoche (his teacher: Lozang Tsultim Rinpoche) or with his learning companion Ngawang Lozang

Mid-day:
-   Debate in the courtyard

Evening:
-   Tara Ritual Puja
-   Debate in the courtyard till past 10pm

Night:
-   In secret, Trijang Rinpoche would study a further 40 to 50 pages of philosophical studies, Kangyur and Tangyur

This is beautiful to read and learn about Trijang Rinpoche's life - what a beautiful peek into his daily life!

What struck me most is that he focuses on the prayers and emanations of Manjushri through gaden lhagyama, Yamantaka and of course Manjushri's own mantra. There is a very strong connection between Trijang Rinpoche and this Buddha, which ties in of course, with his strong relationship to Dorje Shugden throughout his life.

I am also inspired by the discipline that he was able to complete so much study and meditation within just one day, even in the harshest of weather conditions. When we read these accounts it show us how our obstacles today are comparatively very small and insignificant, and we just make excuses for not accomplishing what we need to do.

HOPE RAINBOW: What does it mean that he read the Kangyur and Tangyur in secret? Why did he have to do this in secret, as these texts can be read by anyone, i believe, and do not require any initiation?

Dear Beggar,
"secret" here does not refer to "secret practices".
When I was a teenager, I was watching TV in "secret" after the allowed time, Trijang Rinpoche was studying Dharma texts!
What were you doing in "secret" at that age?
:)

Ah, "secret" means here that it was supposed to be time not meant for studying but he did anyway! Funny how he would find any way to study and read Dharma, even in "secret". Most of us are "secretly" trying to get away from doing more than we need to and would be the reverse to what Trijang Rinpoche did.

It is a consistent point in all the high Lamas biographies that they would find it very spontaneous and easy to read Dharma texts, study, memorise and engage in retreats. They really yearn for it and it is when they cannot do this that they "suffer" - quite the opposite for us modern, wandering, distracted minds! I suppose if we all truly understood the importance and benefit of reading such texts, we would too - it's all a matter of priority, which we have evidently all mixed up.

Thank you Hoperainbow for sharing this.

High and attained lamas such as Tirjang Rinpoche would never get bored or tired in learning and teaching. They spend their whole life on acquiring knowledge, sharing with their students and benefitting everyone they come across.

Trijang Rinpoche set PERFECT EXAMPLE  to all of us on how we have wasted our lives doing all the mundane things which we hold so dear. It is a true inspiration in reflecting on ourselves that how little we have done in our lives.

These high lamas also show us by " leading  by example" the 6 parameters...... ...

I also read one interesting account in Trijang Rinpoche's Biography that when he was young, he liked to play and draw pictures. But his teacher Gan Rinpoche was very strict. The table close by where Trijang Rinpoche was playing would always come a loud knocking sound  before Gan Rinpoche was to retrun to check on him. This had allowed him to collect the toys he was playing and then pretended to be studying and avoided the scolding from Gan Rinoche. And it was becasue of this "knocking sound" that he could always rely upon, he said he could relax and play until the knocking sound occured.

He then mentioned that it was Dorje Shugden who has cared for him like a loving nother, countless times, even when he was a child at play.

I find this very cute becasue at the end of the day, all children like to play whether you are a high lama or an ordinary kid. Trijang Rinpoche was no difference. One can easily see the very close bonding and relationship between Trijang Rinpoche and Dorje Shugden.

Dear hope rainbow,

Thank you for this precious gem that, when contemplated, will dispel laziness!

Do you have the source of this information?  It might be nice to include it in the Trijang Rinpoche Wikipedia article.

Thank you for sharing this information on HH Trijang Rinpoche's previous life.

I loved especially the story about the knocking that Triesa posted. I would love to read this autobiography. Is it on sale anywhere? Do any of you have more info of when he received the Dorje Shugden practice and how old was he? Would his previous lives have also practised Dorje Shugden? Who was Trijang Rinpoche's previous life in the time of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen or Tsongkhapa?

Sorry I am full of questions. I'm just curious.

Thank you!

I do not know the answers to all your questions WB.
And I will answer to a question that was not asked, I'll tell you who Trijang Rinpoche was at the time of Sidharta, he was Chandra, the charioteer of Prince Sidharta.
Also in the present time, two of his previous incarnations were Ganden Tripas (69th and 85th).
But, you have triggered my curiosity and I would very much like to know who/where he was at the time of Lama Tsongkhapa and Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsaen.

When I learnt that one of Trijang Rinpoche's previous lives at the time of Sidharta was actually Chandra, the charioteer of Prince Sidharta, it gives me great hope that I can be saved too:-)

I believe the amount of merits Chandra collected by helping Sidharta to escape the palace, and thus creating the cause for the prince to become enlightened was enormous as so many have come into the path of liberation under Buddha Shakyamuni's era.

Let me share more about Trijang Rinpoche (previous incarnation) 's biography:

At 4 years old, Trijan Rinpoche travels from his birhplace to his ladrang in Lhasa.
There to greet his arrival at his ladrang was a ceremony on which occasion a template of the tibetan alphabet was presented to him by Lord Chantzo Ngaram Dampa and Trijang Rinpoche is said to have learned and remembered it within a day!

Extra-ordinary.

With regards to Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, he is known to be an emanation of Vajrayogini/ Heruka. In one of his incarnations, he was recognised as the Karmapa and the Karmapa in turn was recognised as Trijang Rinpoche. This 'switch-a-roo' established the close relationship he has with the Karmapa and it is probably also a teaching against sectarianism.

Wow, what a wonderful post on Trijang Rinpoche's life!

May we have access to read or view his full bio at sometime and learn more about this great master.

The little that I have read have inspired me immensely.

For someone like me who has trouble just trying to memorise a few lines of mantra, it is incredible to learn that Trijang Rinpoche can remember a whole text just like that! Such are the attainments accumulated from many lifetimes and these are proofs, living evidence that Tulkus and attainments exist! They do not just fade away and die off. They do remain with us, like strong imprints do.

May all of us be able to cultivate such attainments so that everything we have learnt and accumulated spiritually will not be forgotten and wasted in each lifetime, but increase forever more.

May we all become just like all the great Masters, always becoming better with each lifetime.

Thank you for this beautiful post, Hope Rainbow!

If Trijang Rinpoche, a holy, faultless being spends all his time studying, memorizing, praying, debating, etc...how much more we samsaric being needs to. Of course, we could think "well, only special beings like Trijang Rinpoche can devote such time, effort, energy...because he is a Buddha and I am not." If we believe in the teachings of the Buddha, then anyone can become a Buddha, anyone can have a happy, meaningful and beneficial life such as Trijang Rinpoche.

I have a long way though...but count myself fortunate to have received teachings and blessings of a Guru to get there..!

Actually, upon reading (the previous incarnation of) Trijang Rinpoche's biography, what strikes me is that many, many obstacles arozed, but he never gave up. His ladrang was in debts, the party of another candidate to the tile of Trijang Tulku created many problems, many a time people tried to attempt to his life, he met with discredit and doubtful students at Chatreng Monastery, he was forced out of Tibet by the chinese oppression then, he had health issues, to name a few.
Most of us have smaller obstacles to deal with, much smaller and very silly for most (diner with friends over Dharma talk, etc...), but our lack of merit make these obstacles so HUGE that we find it so hard to practice.
This tells me a lot about who Trijang Rinpoche actually is, of how highly attained he is...
And I say he is, because we only need to see the obstacles his current incarnation had to face and how he remained faithful and steady through them to confirm through observation that they are of the same mind continuum.

Thank you Hope Rainbow for sharing the wonderful information. It is always good to read the biography of high lamas as we will be inspired by their perseverance in continuing the spiritual path & pursue despite obstacles.

I personally feel inspired reading the biography of high lamas, because I realise that:
a) they too have to face a lot of obstacles (although not their fault) and overcome them - there's no short cut eventhough they are high lamas

b) lifetimes after lifetimes (usually the bio will include their previous incarnations/ lineage) they come back again and again to benefit many selflessly

c) these are special beings who is in samsara yet out of it, like a lotus that grew from mud but free from mud

I like coming to this forum because there are a lot of nformation or stories about other high lamas. Also, the section of GREAT MASTERS on the main page of dorjeshugden.com also has many interesting stories of many high lamas: http://dorjeshugden.com/wp/?page_id=37

Re reading the Kangyur and Tangyur in secret, i remember reading somewhere too that when Trijang Rinpoche was small, he recited Manjushri's mantra 100,000 times on his own, without being prompted - just because he wanted wisdom! It's so amazing to read about the lives and motivation of our lineage Lamas and seeing the similar Bodhisattva traits - and always being attracted to Dharma no matter what the environment or circumstance. For me, it is irrefutable proof of reincarnated attained beings - Tulkus - and truly inspirational.

Just to add on that, Trijang Rinpoche's was cheated by two sangha who claimed to help him to raise funds for his ladrang by some kind of business deal, of course, all went sour but Trijang Rinpoche did not even attempt to ask where the money went so as not to tarnish the reputation of the sangha community. He just let go,

Like what Hope Rainbow mentioned, Trijang Rinpoche never give up no matter how many obstacles he faced and had to deal with. Through all these episodes, he demonstrated forgiveness, patience, tolerence, effort, concentration and humility  showing us ordinary lay practitioners that we can also deal with our issues and problems if we persist and never give up.

Teaching Dharma at this degenerated age is not easy........high lamas like Trijang Rinpoche, and including the current incarnation as well, has to go through so much to continuously turn the wheel of Dharma.

We should treasure all our lineage lamas and the scacred Dharma by transforming ourselves.

I just wanted to comment on this point - that Trijang Rinpoche preferred to remain quiet over the misdemeanors of the Sangha. I know we talk about karma and how that natural law will punish those who do wrong so we don't worry about making sure justice is done. However, how does that work in the normal day to day life - if we don't stop criminals, they will continue to harm others. Although in this case, trusting Trijang Rinpoche knows best, he probably knew that those two would not harm others and just con Trijang Rinpoche.

Thank you, Hope Rainbow, for sharing this infomation. It is really amazing to see highly attained lamas never complained or get tired studying or giving teachings. Trijang Rinpoche at such a young age had started to acquire knowledge, studying and getting himself prepared to teach and share the dharma. It is said in his biography that around the age of 25 years, he was actually giving teachings to around 800 monks.

Trijang Rinpoche is a good example for us to follow. We should not waste our lives doing secular matters which will be taken away from us when death comes, but we must use our time to study the dharma, transform to be a better person in order to reach out and help and benefit others.

Even at a very young age around 6 years old, Trijang Rinpoche could memorize many of the recitations from  Bodhicharyavatara (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life-Shantideva), he could also memorize the tantra Expression of the Names of Manjushri, the short Orange Manjushri sadhana and almost all of the Ornament of Clear Realizations. He is definitely proof of a reincarnated attained being.

Amazing how much one Lama can do for an entire lineage - even at the most trying times of his country and even at the risk of his own life.

Highly attained Masters are so special that a lineage continues to survive and improves because of them. As such with the evidence from Trijang Rinpoche's life.

They can lose an entire kingdom, but it will not end there. They can go on to build a new stronger and bigger kingdom that makes the previous pale by comparison. Such is how Trijang Rinpoche has impacted the world of Buddhism - from Tibet, it now opens up to the whole world.

It is so inspiring to read about Trijang Rinpoche and what he has achieved/accomplished for the Gelugpa Lineage.

It is because of high lamas and tulkus like him, a lineage will never die.

I enjoyed reading Trijang Rinpoche's bio and found it very inspiring. At the end of his bio, I could begin to understand what is meant by perseverance in the vocab of these high lamas.

As pointed out by the rest, he faced all the obstacles we face and much more. When Trijang Rinpoche was first recognised he was challenged by another contender, his physical safety was threatened to the extent that he and his personal attendant had to lock themselves up in a room. The difference between Trijang Rinpoche and us is -
giving up the spiritual path was never an option to him. These high beings take rebirth to show us the stainless example of walking the path.

Every experience invoked deep realisation in him. However, he's extremely humble, always put himself down on the same level as ordinary folks.

As my Guru says Trijang Rinpoche's bio should be taken as daily sadhana for lay people because all the qualities to be cultivated by buddhists are embodied by this great master and it's more relational to us because his time is so close to our current days.

Yes, Trijang Rinpoche's bio should be read as a daily sadhana - I do agree.

Kyabje Trijang's life serves as a evidence for those who lack ability or faith that it only takes one lama to be able to spread the Gelug tradition from Tibet to the world.

Because Trijang Rinpoche was such a suitable vessel to hold all the teachings/transmissions from his root Guru, Pabongka Rinpoche - the lineage could be passed on.

Because Trijang Rinpoche was such an accomplished Lama, no obstacle is too great. He continued to spread the Dharma far and wide. Many of the Gelug Gurus today are his students.

There goes to show, if one great Lama can do so much - what more a few?

May we all truly aspire to become just like Trijang Rinpoche.

And even if we can't, because of our own lack of ability or understanding, may we truly serve our lamas well so that they have all the support they need to continue their precious work.

The lineage continues because there are true holders of the lineage, and they have been given the right support and help to do their most valuable work.

WB, about the reason why Trijang Rinpoche did not expose the scoundrels we do not know.
In his biography Trijang Rinpoche does not explain much, so it got me thinking.
Because these scoundrel were actually two elder monks, there is this possibility that Trijang Rinpoche did not act openly and did not make this a "loud affair" because he did not want this to discredit the sangha and affect people's faith and spiritual journeys.
Just look at what happens in our times, It just needs one story of a monk guilty of sexual behavior in tabloid magazines to tarnish the image of the sangha as a whole. Then, those with little or no merit cannot resist the moral downfall of loosing their reliance on Buddha-Dharma-Sangha.
Title: Re: Trijang Rinpoche's daily routine as a student
Post by: triesa on October 18, 2010, 02:43:36 AM
What Hope Rainbow said is very applicable. Trijang Rinpoche did not really elaborate much on this incidence in his auto biography. It is more on how we interpretate his action.

I always have full faith of the actions of high attained lamas, such as Trijang Rinpoche, his not exposing or making it a loud affair of these two Sanga members who had cheated him must have a valid reason. Like what Hope Rainbow said, it only take one sanga member to behave badly and appears on the tabloid magazine, the whole world would be jumping up and down and start critizising, doubts would arise, respect would be lost and as a result, people will have less faith in the dharma.

Like the saying goes, one bad apple spoils the whole basket. So sometimes a high lama would just have to act and play dump, but that doesn't mean he is not aware of this at all. The main reason is just to protect the buddha teachings.

We must also understand that not every Sanga member is free from fault, they are also normal human beings who are subject to greed, anger and desire; if not they would already be a buddha. having said that, the negative karma these two sanga members created in cheating Trijang Rinpoche with the vows they had taken would be definitely much much more heavy.

The great thing about reading the lineage lamas' biographies is that they seem to have much in common - for example, although they are attained, they usually have gone through some kind of hardship and overcome them. That makes it easier for me to relate to them. Their qualities such as perseverance and humility are very inspirational.

I am totally in awe at the “routine” of this young man...

If I reflect on what I did in my younger years, if I recall what my mind was preoccupied with, I mean, I will just blush with embarrassment...

Trijang Rinpoche had so much focus and a natural discipline that is so effortless and spontaneous, we could not even call it discipline but maybe “habit”?

And at the end of the day, up to 50 pages of text! I mean, it takes me an hour to read and absorb (a little) one page of the lamrim...

Reading about such Great Masters is totally awesome and inspiring!

When we read the spiritual life stories, I believe it is important to remember that the essence of Dharma is training the mind. This can and should be done in every type of situation without discriminating what is and is not suitable or spiritual. Every practitioner has their own particular circumstances along the journey with their own lessons tailored just for them by the Guru. There is no "best" way to practice other than training the mind, and there is no better example.

The lives of the Masters are also quite varied and this shows that there are many different approaches and there are different methods applied at different times during the journey. Trijang Dorjechang's example was very beautiful, definitely, but we must understand that the overall lesson is it is an encouragement to make training the mind the meaning of our life regardless of our circumstances. We should not take them to mean we must necessarily live like Je Milarepa, or study like Je Tsongkhapa.

I am compelled to write this because again and again practitioners read the stories and fall into a common trap of extreme view discriminating too strongly between what is and is not spiritual. This is a dangerous mental habit, one that has good friends like 'discriminating too strongly between the meditation session and the meditation break', or 'discriminating too strongly between what is and is not meaningful'. While it is important to make some distinctions at different stages of training based all personal assessment of our training, it is essential we strive to abide by what I believe defines 'a meaningful life' - to delight in training the mind regardless of where we are, who we are with, or what we are doing.

Lets also stop our bad discrimination habit from going on to judge the spiritual lives of others as well. There is a time for study, and a time to go off the page, a time to contemplate, and a time to put conceptual mind to rest. We will all make our own choices at different stages of our journey and it is important that we learn to empower everyone's mind training regardless of their circumstances. What is the difference between the practitioner-scholar in class all the time, the practitioner-yogi in retreat, and the practitioner-parent? Context.

Do you have benefactors that enable you to sit around doing pujas and studying Dharma all day? Yes? Great, train your mind. Do you have to work all day and take care of a family? Yes? Great, train your mind. Everyone has different karma and different things will bring about realization. It sometimes happens that the person with nearly no Dharma knowledge has profound completion stage experiences, while someone who has studied and trained extensively has great difficulty accessing such experiences. So don't let deluded pride elevate you into thinking you are extra special because you think you're doing all the right things! Don't miss the point entirely!

The only right way to practice is to train the mind!

To all of you training your mind, whoever you are, whatever you are doing, whatever your routine is, the Protector is delighted in you and thanks you for your courage fighting the good fight!

From HH Trijang Rinpoche’s routine as a teenage not even 20 year old, I can see how consistent, persistent, and hard working he was in his spiritual practices. He will find “secret” time to study Dharma text.
We should  follow his great example and do not give any excuse in our spiritual practices.

As mentioned by beggar, it's very interesting to read that HH Trijang Rinpoche's daily practices are mainly of Manjushri and Yamantaka and of course, Dorje Shugden. When I was HH Trijang Rinpoche's age I was fooling around with kids my age, skipping school and getting myself into a lot of troubles. That's why I am who I am today whilst Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche is already turning the wheel of dharma.

Two words came in to my mind on H.H Trijang Rinpoche's life.
Very discipline and consistent.
Everyday did the same. Not only require great self discipline, but patience too, no matter what happened. Days by days did the same actions are very rare now a days.

H.H Trijang Rinpoche is emanation of Vajrayogini himself.
Through he daily routine, H.H guide us the way to practice Dharma.

Trijang Rinpoche's past incarnations include Bohdisattva Manjushri, Mahasiddha Biwa, Sakya Pandita and Buton Rinchen Drub.  All of these are glorious and stainless incarnations.  This explains what he did in his daily routine as student is beyond an ordinary person's interest.  Only an Extraordinary Being does things opposite us.

I am glad Trijang Rinpoche is well protected.  Enjoy this video:

Reading through this post again, I tried to recall my early years when I was a young student, and how I did then.
I recall clearly that when I was supposed to study, such as the days before examination, my week-ends and evening were extremely busy, I was occupied with so many things in what appeared to be the opposite of procrastination.

I would re-arrange the furniture in my room, organize my shelves, I would sharpen all my colour pencils and arrange them by color, I would clean my wardrobe, taking all clothes out and arranging them properly, folding them all in the same way then arranging them in neat piles, perhaps I would finally read that book that we were supposed to read a year earlier for class and of which I only read the first three pages, then I would find that book that I did not return at the library in time and I would go to the library immediately to repair that oblivion, I would walk the dog as asked, by I would do it for more than an hour, I  would change the cat litter (an occupation otherwise not pleasant), etc...

Anything that would reassure my mind that I was not procrastinating, I would engage into in order to fool myself.

Later, I learnt that this kind of activity is a form of laziness from a Buddhist point of view.
An hyper-activity that has for motivation to distract one from what he should really be busy with, and gives one an excuse for not doing it.

Trijang Rinpoche did the opposite, Trijang Rinpoche got engaged in Dharma with so much passion that His mind simply could not get distracted at all from what He wanted to achieve in His life.

Reading the contributions by all you kind people, makes me realise how I waste my life doing what is expected in the secular samsara way.  Live my life by learning the basics to live from baby to adulthood chasing survival.  To be equipped with the goal of achieving more materialistically.

We are all brought in the world order designed to entrap us in sheer ignorance, to have everything being futile on our death.

Some of us have the merits to meet the Dharma and decide to make changes to create more meaning to our purpose in this life.  Then we are faced with the obstacles which will endanger or slow down and some even to get out of this spiritual journey.

However, with highly attained and enlightened beings like Trijang Rinpoche, their whole purpose is the goal to benefit others.  They are disciplined and whatever they do is to have the realisation of the needs of all sentient beings and to convey the Dharma to them in the way that suits them and the time they live in. They are embodiment of compassion and wisdom.

What they hold on to is the core of Dharma and life after life they return in forms appropriate to be of benefit.

We have much distractions and cravings, but these living Buddhas are kind and they are always here to help us. I am one of these lucky people who has a divine root guru.  He teaches us all the time, let us be blessed to learn and have some merits to continue our pursuit in the next life.  I hope to live for that.
