Title: NEW ARTICLE! A commentary on Dorje Shugdens kawang!
Post by: DharmaDefender on July 11, 2013, 08:52:25 PM
I cant think of a better name for this article! Really is Dharma demystified...its nice to recite something and know what it means, and not just do it out of faith (although faith is really powerful too). And theres just something about reciting the kanshag that really calms me down and I find quite comforting, especially when Im not feeling too great about things, you know?

Have any of you done a kanshag retreat or some sort before? Id be interested to know, its not exactly short like Dorje Shugdens mantra so Id love to know how you go on reciting 100,000 of these!

Whenever I am in times of doubt and trouble or whenever things get very hairy for me to the point where I feel lost and in darkness, and the worst part being not having anyone to turn to, I do kawang and nyitroe, and things would start to resolve themselves, or that my perspective will change within a short time and the suffering and difficulties would resolve, or suddenly I would be able to see the solution to the problem. It has always happened in this way and I really do recommend it also for my very close circle of friends to do it when they have problems that cannot be normally solved.

I have not specifically done a Kawang/kangshak retreat before but I do regular Serkym puja/offering to DS on my own in front of my own altar at home. And occasionally I do incorporate Kawang whenever I am particularly troubled that day or when I had encountered an unpleasant episode during the day that needed purifying. Like Ensapa, I too do find solace and a sense of relief and resolve after Kawang. The problems do not look as overwhelming as before and somehow something will happen or someone will appear soon after to help with that particular difficult situation. I have full trust and confidence in praying to DS, offering Serkym and Kawang whenever the need arises. I definitely recommend it to everyone. Even if things are going well, I still think it is of great joy to do kawang as offering to benefit the world.

The Shugden kawang is one of the most efficacious prayers we can do to remove obstacles. The visualization itself is beautiful and it is clear that in the kawang we invoke the help of a higher power (the dakini representing Vajrayogini herself) to assist in removing the sources/causes of our negative actions which result in the creation of negative karma, that in turn manifest as obstacles in our life.

Each offering to Dorje Shugden represents a tranformation of negative elements that control our actions into positive ones that pleases the Protector and indeed the transformation is of the highest inner level. In addition the objects being offered are sublime representations of our good motivations and pure motives towards the Dharma and in turn we request Dorje Shugden to help us by removing our delusions (as represented of the sword) as well as other poisons.

There is no question in my mind how powerful the Dorje Shugden kawang is and this is based on very personal and direct experiences. In another thread in this Forum (Clearing curses and negativities) it has also been said that the Shugden kangsol is effective in removing problems that has been instigated by land gods/deities.

Through Kawang, we can convert our three poisons of ignorance, anger and attachment into sublime offerings with the assistance of the dakini, an emanation of Vajrayogini.  The visualisation part also helps us to overcome our perception of impure substances like our blood, pus, urine and so on which are visualised and transformed into the wrathful sensory offerings.  In short, Kawang is a skillful and very powerful way to make offerings to Lord Dorje Shugden to purify our heavy negative karma.

The other notable aspect of the kawang is that it includes other types of offerings like the various other sensual objects, seven royal emblems, various animals like horses, elephants, frightful yaks, sheep and dogs as mounts, saffron robes, armor and shields, arrows, spears and various types of sharp weapons.  Hence, Kawang is comprehensive and complete as it includes all offerings that we can make to Lord Dorje Shugden.

Besides the above, the article also mentioned many other benefits which we can receive from doing the Kawang practice.  It is a necessary practice for all!

The Kawang prayers of Dorje Shugden it's very powerful!!!

Many years ago, when I was facing financial problems and I came to know a friend who is DS practitioner, he knows I was having 'BIG TROUBLES' and he told me, by doing DS prayers and kawang will be very beneficial for my problems that I am facing now and it will also help my love one. At that time I don't know who is Dorje Shugden, but because my friend told me DS has helped him a lot! I started to do His prayers and kawang everyday, true enough after doing that for few months, I managed to clear some of my debts, eventually within a year I have cleared all!!!!!

Dorje Shugden is very POWERFUL! He is an Enlighten Protector! He will help us, regardless who we are, just have faith in Him and do His practice, you will see results.  :)

Many years ago I engaged in a retreat to recite kawang of another protector but the required number was much lesser. We were required to do kawang plus serkym offerings to request for approval of a particular license which was faced with difficulties. Not to sound mystified but as soon as we finished the puja, we received news that the license was approved.

Since kawang or kangshak literally means ‘clearing of obstacles’, so it is logically that reciting this special confessional prayer will help us to purify our accumulated negative karma which otherwise will obstruct our dharma practice.

The graphic tantric visualisations can sometimes be over-whelming for the beginners but once we understand the meaning behind it, it is very meaningful as it helps us to visualise the elimination of our 3 poisons namely Ignorance, Hatred and Desire as well as their entailed negativities.

Hi Ensapa,

I agreed with your comments, Dorje Shugden will help everyone of us, as long we have right motivation! By doing His prayers, lots of obstacles have been cleared and especially for those who surrender and put trust in Him, DS will guide you all the way in the spiritually path, financially and families!  :)

My first impression of Kawang is it is very detail and very graphic at the same time. Even without the commentary, reading the Kawang text itself, one feels one is the main character in the story-like environment. It is probably easier to remember Kawang like a story similar to a song. Does the Tibetan version actually sounds like a poetry?

Also the commentary reminds me of what is happening in my mind when I read novels. As a reader I tend to visualize seeing the scenes based on how the author describe it. I do think that novel does have an impact on reader because there is an interaction going on between the author's words and reader's mind, emotions and feelings. Now with the detail commentary one does interact with the words. The effects on the practitioner become even pronounce when one combine visualization and repetitions. With the blessings from the author, who has qualities from an enlightened mind, the Kawang becomes an absolutely powerful tool for the practitioner to purify obstacles coming from one's negative karma.

Although the visualisations of the offerings do seem very gory and violent at first to the untrained and new practitioner with a vivid imagination, once we understand the true meaning behind the purpose of the offerings, it does indeed become beautiful and mystical, almost magical to say the least, like a mysterious haunting poem or fairytale. DS to me is like the force of Good over Evil, brandishing a sword like a knight warrior cutting away at our ignorance, delusions and hatred and replacing our fears and misery with hope, joy, peace and a calm mind.

First of all, thank you for writing such an easy-to-understand and comprehensive explanation about kawang. I was also told to recite kawang as it is very beneficial to remove obstacles that will hinder my dharma practice and progress. However, I could not quite understand what I was reciting or why it is so “bloody”.

After reading the article, I am awed by how beautiful the kawang is: transforming all that is negative within us into something pure and good to offer up to the Buddhas. This reminds me of the representation of the flawless white lotus that grows out of muddy water. This is probably why our kind Gurus teach us that pure Dharma is truly the most precious gift we can receive because Dharma practice can “uncontaminated” our inventory of karma and lead us towards freedom from the uncontrolled cycle of rebirth in samsara.

The practice of the kawang where Vajrayogini transforms our “ugliness” into offerings for Dorje Shugden reflects on the baffling kindness of the Buddhas especially our Lord Protector – Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden is willing to receive the worst and lowest of which we are and this mere act of acceptance from Him transforms our negativities (blood, flesh, urine, bile etc.) into goodness (clear water, food, perfume etc.)

DS Star, i couldn't agree more the very meaningful and powerful practice of Kawang.

There are many confessional practices but Kawang is unique because it uses many powerful tantric methods e.g. visualisations.  Tantra brings the results of the future into the present via our visualisations and hence it is a quick path to overcoming our obstacles in Dharma practice especially our three poisons!  Dorje Shugden Kawang is powerful and swift to bring us results as it taps into the blessings of Lord Dorje Shugden - the protector of this time!

Dear Diamond223, i rejoice that your practice created the merits for your problems to be resolved so swiftly. With so many challenges samsara throws at us, we are very fortunate to have the blessings of our Guru and the Buddhas to receive kawang.

However, I also wish to humbly add that effort (one of the 6 perfections (paramitas)) is very important to having our "fate" change for the better. As the practice of kawang is a good start to generate merits to battle our negative karma, we need to follow up with hard work and consistent effort to fuel our "fate" in the desired direction.

I relate this to the saying Buddha (God) can only help those who help themselves :)

Really, it is kind of funny to think we can feel this special confessional prayer which is so graphic with blood, bile, etc. is a beautiful prayer. But it is... as the so-called 'ugliness' is now transformed into beautiful offerings to Buddha or the King Dorje Shugden.

On lower level, the Kawang by itself is already so beautiful, on the higher level, this prayer actually teaching about letting go or detachment to our very body. It is a graphic visualisation of Death Meditation. And from this, we are skillfully led to realise the concept of  'emptiness' and 'impermanent'.

No wonder this prayer is very powerful... I now see that if one practice this diligently and with correct motivation, one can even obtain very high attainment merely by reciting Kawang.

This is truly great article. It has indeed de-mysified the powerful Protector practice of the Kawang, much to the benefit of us all.

In essence, the Kawang as a powerful purification practice is very necessary for all, and especially for serious practitioners embarked on clearing all obstacles to Dharma practice that will bring about ultimate and complete freedom of suffering for self and all.

The very subtle inner obstacles - the three poisons of Ignorance, Hatred and Desire, as well as all intertwined delusions, negative habituations and negative karma - are our most tenacious and most powerful enemies. They thwart us in every way and prevent us from progressing on our spiritual path,as determined as we are to train and transform and grow. It is only through the powerful purification practice of the Kawang that we can clear these obstacles.

Why so?

In the Kawang, it is the dakini who is a manifestation of Vajrayogini(the most compassionate Buddha of this age of lust and degeneration) who is actively engaged in aiding us in the process of our purification by transforming our gross negativities and delusions(represented by our gross and grotesque body and its parts) into sublime offerings. Meticulously and systematically, our body is cut up by the dakini and offered to Protector Dorje Shugden on our behalf.

Thus,in the visualization, the skin is removed first. to reveal all our grotesque inner parts. The offerings begin with the blood which is drained into a vessel and offered up. This is followed, step by step, with the chopping up and offering of the sense organs, the bones(which are burnt), then extraction of the body fat, and the fluids, like the bile and urine, the chopping up of the flesh which is mixed with barley flour and the removal of the thigh bones to form a trumpet. These respectively represent the offerings of water and sensory offerings like flower, incense, light , perfume ,food and music. All the grotesque body parts, fat and fluids are thus transformed into sublime offerings and offered to Dorje Shugden by Vajrayogini on our behalf. In this way all our accumulated load of negative karma that threaten to obstruct and derail our practice is purified. Corresponding to the amount of obstacles that need to be cleared, the actual visualization becomes particularly intense and graphic.

In this way, if performed with sincere motivation, the Kawang truly clears and purifies powerful negative karma and delusions, which in a way, 'blindfold' Dorje Shugden so that He cannot help and protect us effectively.

I agree with what Vajratruth  has said about the efficacy of the Kawang as a purification practice.  Yes, it is efficacious because "each offering to Dorje Shugden represents a transformation of negative elements into positive ones....and indeed the transformation is of the highest inner level". Yes, through the Kawang, we are actually transforming our root delusions, like ignorance, hatred and desire, into positive qualities like the wisdom to know and accept the Law of Cause and Effect as universal and all-embracing, the wisdom to accept that impermanence governs all contaminated phenomena, the wisdom to let go, the qualities of equanimity, giving, love, patience and compassion. It cannot be an overnight transformation, but when we do our Kawang sincerely and persistently, we know that our Lama and Dorje Shugden are there to guide and protect us.      Indeed it is the Kawang that is perhaps the feature that  makes the Protector Practice so powerful.

Kawang is a powerful practice for clearing obstacles. It is especially beneficial to recite the kawang everyday and when there is a special need to clear major obstacles, one should recite it seven times or more. It is also good to engage in a Dorje Shugden retreat to clear major obstacles and during the retreat the kawang can be  recited many times according to the guru's instructions.

I feel that by doing kawang, one generates the positive energies to reverse negativity as we are offering our negativities in the form of a human being, enough to turn the obstacles around and that is how Kawang actually works. With the explanation here on the offering of the human body, it makes me understand why is it so effective, because for us, the most precious possession as a human being is really one's body and to offer that up would generate a lot of merits as the quantity of merits depend on how attached you are at the object you are offering.

I wish to thanks the admin.

By the explanation on Kawang, I manage to
1) Understand the beauty on the Kawang
2) Visualize the offering process
3) Understand that Kawang helps us in getting close to Dorje Shugden
4) The method to make the mind stabilized
5) The easiest method to purify our self-made negative karma.

Good article.

Thank you for this great article and the opinions of those who have responded to this thread. I hadn't realised the deep meaning behind the confessional prayer. Actually i was kind of averse to it, having rejected the catholic confessionals, thinking that what's the point. Thanks for giving this prayer a different perspective. I will think more about it. I very much appreciate the articles on this website for imparting much needed knowledge to the dharma loners like me who do not yet have a dharma centre i feel comfortable with so this virtual dharma space is important to me as my kind of virtual dharma centre. Much obliged!

There's actually a lot more to Buddhist confessional prayers as opposed to the ones found in christianity. For one, it is not about feeling good or just to get rid of guilt, or to whitewash all the bad stuff that we have done in the past. Confessions is about acknowledging your wrongdoings, and that you have done them before and you now regret that you have did and would like to make ammends. This is what sets Buddhist confessions apart from the more worldly ways and this is why they are so powerful to do.

Kawang is definitely a great prayer to do. I will always do it when I feel troubled or bothered by something. After doing the prayer, it is like a relieve to me. It also helps me to calm myself and think of great ways to solve whatever that was bothering me before. It is definitely protector helping and guiding me to the path that I should follow.

Not only that Kawang helps you to clear obstacles that you face including mental blockage, but it also teaches us to not be attached to our bodies. Reminding us that when we pass away, we would not have this body to move on with us. Hence we offer ourselves to protector clearing our negativity at the same time.

I do Kawang whenever I have a personal crisis and it does help to solve it pretty quickly and fast. Well, quicker than me trying to find a way out of it myself, at least. I find it very effective in providing a solution, or rather that the solution to the problem either manifests physically like meeting the right people, or that my perspective suddenly changes and i get to see a new dimension to the problem which allows me to solve it. It is quite interesting in how the whole thing works! Everyone should do Kawang at least once!

This article is so well explained and so very useful, thank you.

Indeed kawang, as vividly explained, is very efficacious and greatly assisted me in ridding my physical health illness as well as my mental health. I did and completed 100,000 recitation last year and those self created obstacles I faced then were reduced tremendously, I would say by 95%. I am still working to get rid of the remaining 5% and concurrently doing my best refraining from other negative thoughts and actions that will add on to the fuel.

Thanks to the DS team for putting up this article. I chance upon it only just now. I had doing the daily sadhana with just reciting one time the kawang/kanshag but recently, on the advise of a fellow practitioner I started doing minimum 7 times. Sometimes, while driving or on a flight I recite kawang also and it seem I am hook on this. Haha. The reason I do this is because I somehow find the kawang text, powerful. My original visualization does not include a dakini but involve our 3 poisons and all beings in human form slaughtered and offered up to the Protector.
I feel, we rid ourselves of our attachment to our form and at the same time the other aggregates of feeling, perception, formation and consciousness. Also, it increase our clarity/wisdom and rid oneselves of selfishness. The text immediately has this effect. Speaking from experience, all worldly and spiritual obstacles take a back seat seems to be overcome almost effortlessly.

What a wonderful practice.

Excellent, thank you.

By offering the harshest parts of life, because the Protector experiences them as the nature of the union of bliss and emptiness, by recognizing this we are creating the cause to transform the harshest realities into a profound experience of bliss and emptiness. I believe that while it is important to empower this practice with the 4 opponent powers, the true power of this practice comes from the union of our mind and the Protector. At the conclusion, having generated he power of promise/determination, it is essential to believe we have purified the negative karma completely, and not only dwell in a confidence that we've achieved complete purity, but to rest our intellectual thoughts in the actual union of our mind and the Protector.

For example, in the fire pujas we say at the end of the substance offerings Shanting Kuruye Soha, meaning 'everything becomes purified in emptiness'. In fire puja we realize that the real fire puja is the actual experience of emptiness. Likewise, in practices such as Samayavajra we conclude the purification with not just conviction we have accomplished complete purity, but we experience union with the three doors of Guru Samayavajra.

So here, we can understand that by saying "In the unobservable emptiness of the three spheres" we are meant to rest in the actual experience of this emptiness, not just recite or think it. Also, that this emptiness is not separate from the Guru's nature.

Hence, just as Kachen Yeshe Gyaltsen in his commentary shows that all our practices point to the union of our mind and the Guru in the nature of the dharmakaya, this practice here is reminding us to rest in this union, for it is the ultimate purification.

Thanks again Admin, excellent work as usual!

I do this Dorje Shugden kawang daily, without fail ever since I found the English version. I know friends who have completed 10K of kawang recitation and I see their obstacles alleviated. Powerful and super effective. Personally it is very short to recite once you have memorised it. Would be fabulous if a group of people can do it together as a retreat. I have often heard from friends that they swear by the protector Kawang. Before practicing DS I am not sure what they mean. But now I totally agree with them and reciting it many times daily do help to clear obstacles. But most of all we must have the trust and faith in Dorje Shugden too!
He is an Enlightened Being!

I was very fortunate to have received the oral transmission from a 'simple monk' in Taipei about 7 years ago. We were just talking in general and I mentioned to him that I am facing obstacles at work. It affected my general well being and even after I return home from work, I am too drained to do any prayers. Out of compassion for me, he gave me this kawang. It was hard for me to recite in the beginning as it is quite long. But after a few days it became much smoother and now I can recite it by heart. My problems in the office lessen and my position became more stabilised because my supervisor found out that it was actually my co-worker who back stabbed me. I have shared this kawang with a few of my friends and they reported the same results.

Thank you. That was a neat addendum to the article. Yes, having faith in the protector and uniting our minds with him. We realized that he abides in emptiness, we are able to purify our negativities and obstacles in the state of emptiness as well. This is very neat and is very much like some of the great purification rituals that utilizes Heart Sutra recitation and remembrance of the core teaching on emptiness and we invoke upon the fact that everything abides in emptiness that we are able to 'dissolve' our obstacles, so to speak. Thank you as that adds to the understand and practice of kawang.

Doing Kawang is so amazing! Every time I feel I am going through a hard time and feeling stuck, panic or unstable, I do Kawang... and then everything else just falls in to place! It is magical and powerful I must admit.

Yes of course we need our Guru samayas cleans, our faith in protector strong and like all prayers, we need to make sure we put in the effort to make things happen.

I feel so blessed to have come across Dharma and such wonderful amazing practices and getting to know Dorje Shugden as my Protector. I so grateful for this merit to be able to receive such a wonderful practice where it gives us a path to transform and be united with the divine.

Thank you Admin for always pouring the nectar of Dharma in us, with more knowledge, our faith grows, stabilizes and becomes immutable like a vajra as we become one with our Guru/Yidam/Dharma Protector  ;)
