Dorje Shugden, emanating in his peaceful form, is depicted in the style of a black thangka (nathang in Tibetan). This style is generally reserved for wrathful deities, so to depict a peaceful Dulzin using this method makes this quite an unusual image.

This image of Dorje Shugden is unusually peaceful and has been repainted based on an old thangka from the 1960′s. Similar to another downloadable thangka, this thangka has a plain background, bringing out the main features of Dorje Shugden. Like many Dorje Shugden images, the facial features are said to resemble Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, who was one of the most influential Gelugpa lineage masters at the time.

Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche was responsible for the spread of Dorje Shugden’s practice throughout the Gelugpas, which was continued by his student, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche.

This popular image of Dorje Shugden bears a remarkable resemblance to our lineage Lama, Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. It was this great Lama who received Dorje Shugden practice directly from Mahasiddha Tagpu Pemavajra, who had, in turn, received the lineage directly from Lord Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen.

Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche foresaw that this Protector would be efficacious for our times and so dedicated much of his lifetime to spreading the practice far and wide.

Based on a landmark teaching by H.E. Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche, this Guru Tree incorporates Dorje Shugden as one of its main Protectors.

On the bottom of this thangka, Dorje Shugden is depicted standing between six-armed White Mahakala and Palden Lhamo. Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche gave extensive teachings as to why Dorje Shugden should be on this Guru Tree and prophesied that he will one day be widely accepted as the main Protector of the Gaden tradition.

Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche, reincarnation of Ra Lotsawa (the originator of the Yamantaka transmission lineage) and holder of all Gelug lineages, has been very kind to give the world this magnificent, updated Guru Tree which shows Dorje Shugden among our other Dharma protectors.

Charting the transmission of Dorje Shugden’s lineage, this Lineage Tree depicts the main lineage Lamas of modern-day Dorje Shugden practice. These Lamas are depicted above Dorje Shugden.

The thangka shows that Dorje Shugden’s practice descended directly from Lama Tsongkhapa in Tushita down to Lord Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen, who then revealed it to Mahasiddha Tagpu Pemavajra.

This Mahasiddha passed the lineage down to Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, who spread it far and wide and in particular, to his heart disciple, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche.

Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche also spread the lineage to countless others, including many of the most prominent Lamas in the world today who have large, global followings. Almost all Gelugpa practitioners today would be within the direct lineage of Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and received teachings from his lineage.

In particular, Trijang Rinpoche passed this lineage to Denma Gongsar Rinpoche. The person who commissioned this thangka is probably the disciple of this illustrious Lama.
