There is not any logic in Lama Zopa's teaching. He says if we cannot point to the Dalai lama as Buddha, then who can we point to.... oh maybe a whole ton of actual enlightened beings, like the Karmapa, whose lineage preceeds Dalai by 300 years--- the real one--- not the China thing the Dalai picked--- I mean come on--- the Dalai is really not too logical-- twists everything-- so does this disciple of his. I have never followed a guru that follows the Dalai Lama, thank goodness.

"The karma from forsaking one’s guru is worse than the karma generated by Hitler and Mao Tse Tung."

"In the world, actions such as killing and waging war have very bad repercussions and are terrible, but the karma from these actions is mild compared to heresy and giving up one’s guru."

We think we are goody two-shoes because we have never kill anyone in this life. We have not committed offense of five heinous crime. Forsaking a guru is not as bad as one might think? But the truth of the matter is forsaking a guru is worst than the five heinous crime because your guru is the most powerful object, your guru will lead you to enlightenment. The opposite of enlightenment is continuously suffering in this samsara world where happiness is temporarily.

Its great to read and re-read posts for subtle understanding in my dinosaur brain with some flashes of 21st century processing...

Understanding the divide between those with strong samaya and guru devotion and those without.

It does put into perspective in this case HHDL meets this need for those with superficial understanding of the dharma and not fully understanding the dharma relationship of what they were getting into.

Many Shugden practitioners have gone underground in order not to show disrespect to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The important thing is to maintain guru devotion. One day, the practice will become mainstream again (everything is impermanent)and these Shugden devotees can practice freely and openly.

Lama Zopa said you check carefully before you commit yourself to a Guru. Since Dalai Lama is Leader of our Spiritual Lineage and has asked us to stop practicing Dorje Shugden and by respect to him as a leader. And if you have been practicing before Dalai Lama put a Ban maybe we still can continue until the Ban is lifted one day by doing secretly and nobody will know. So you have not broken your Samaya with your Guru. When you stop superficially you are not disobeying your leader. So both ways you do not break your Samaya and patriotism to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Government.
