« on: October 16, 2019, 07:01:38 AM »
It is nice to see Buddhism is flourishing in Russia in the Kalmyk region. Even though Russia is not a Buddhist country, but people are given the freedom to believe what they want to. With the big Buddha, many beings, seen and unseen will be blessed.

The largest Buddha statue in Europe, sitting at a whopping 12.5 meters high, has been unveiled in Kalmykia, western Russia.

The ‘Golden Abode of the Buddha-Shakyamuni’ weighs 30 tons and is the largest statue of the Maitreya Buddha (Buddha of the Coming) in Europe, according to TASS.

Over 2,000 people and several monks reportedly attended the Buddha’s unveiling ceremony in Lagan on Sunday. The huge gold statue was built using donations from Russian residents “and believers,” the press service reported.

Kalmykians is a Mongol subgroup in Russia, traditionally, all of them are Buddhists. Even though they have migrated to Russia for few hundred years, they still maintain their faith in Buddhism.

It is great to see the development of Buddhism in Kalmyk area. Buddhism is starting to revive in Russia, many people will benefit from it.
