Dalai Lama cancels Botswana visit ‘due to exhaustion’

By Lakeland Staff Writer on November 4, 2018

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has cancelled a planned visit to Botswana because of exhaustion, his office said, a move that is likely to be welcomed by China, a major investor in the African country. The Dalai Lama had been expected to address a human rights conference in the capital Gaborone on Aug. 17-19 and meet Botswana’s president during the trip.

Visits by the Dalai Lama to foreign countries infuriate China, and it stepped up warnings to Botswana last month, with its Foreign Ministry spokesman demanding “the relevant country earnestly respect China’s core interests and make the correct political decision on this matter”.

Botswana reacted by saying that as a sovereign state, it retained the right to permit anyone to enter the country.

The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, has long been at loggerheads over Tibet with China, which brands him a reactionary and separatist. The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, says he seeks greater rights, including religious freedom, and true autonomy for Tibetans.

In a statement late on Friday the Dalai Lama’s office said his doctors had advised him to avoid undertaking long journeys for the next few weeks.

“During the past few weeks, His Holiness has found that carrying out his activities has left him unusually tired,” it said.

“Although he had been eagerly looking forward to visiting Gaborone … His Holiness has reluctantly had to concede that his 82-year old body was telling him to rest.”

China’s fast-growing demand for raw materials has made it one of the biggest investors in Africa and its largest trade partner. Chinese state-owned companies have been awarded contracts to build roads, dams, power stations and airports in Botswana.

If you notice, Dalai Lama rarely cancels trips to countries that can give large donations, have potential sponsorships or countries related to countries that can give funds. If it is to poor countries, it is usually cancelled and when cancelled, no big deal is made of it.

Perhaps this is his secretaries and assistants who do this and makes the Dalai Lama look bad.

The richest country Dalai Lama can travel to is China. They have all the wealth he and his cronies need. Too bad Dalai Lama's begging to return to China has fallen on deaf ears. Since Dalai Lama's group always says China funds the Shugden groups and Shugden groups are rich, then there is plenty of more money for Dalai Lama's cronies to be had in China if they make friends. They should make friends with China because Tibet is in China.

Countries like Botswana never donate substantial amounts and is always looking for money from rich countries therefore the Dalai Lama going there will get no money from the people or their government. But the Dalai Lama should send Lamas and monks there to Botswana to spread the word of Buddhism. The people there are ripe and intelligent. But if you notice Tibetan Buddhist lamas never go to poor countries to spread the word of Buddha. They dare not endure hardships.
Tibetan government in exile will never organize themselves to send people to Africa to teach Buddhism. They only send lamas to places where there is plenty of money. Observe and research for yourself.

Thaimonk, you have your point there, now that you have mentioned it. It is true that the Tibetan monks or the monastery rarely send people to the poor country to spread Buddhism. In Africa, the Dharma centers are mainly established by the Mahayana tradition, very seldom by the Vajrayana tradition.

I always see the Tibetan monks going on a world tour to do the chanting performance and draw the sand mandala. They are presenting the ritual like a cultural thing to the West. I have not read any news about Tibetans monk going to a poor country to establish a Dharma center.

So money is still more important than spreading Dharma to people who need it. The CTA is using the Sangha as a money making tool to make money for them. They are not really interested in preserving and spreading of Buddhism. Everything the CTA does is motivated by money.

Botswana, did the same invitation to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2017 around August of 2017, and the Dalai Lama conveniently also skipped the Botswana trip then due to exhaustion. The Dalai Lama seems to be Always skipping places like Botswana as it's not profitable financially for him to go there.

Botswana GDP is ranked around 117 in the world, probably not so important market for Tibetan government and Dalai Lama. Too bad. Dalai Lama should go there to spread the word of the Buddha. Does not matter if he gets money or not, he should go.

Are you sure of your statement here? You are referring to those pro-Dalai Lama or encompass all Tibetan Buddhist Lamas? If that is true, then it would seem strange when the Africans too need compassion of the Dharma. I had met some Africana who had expressed their keen interests in Buddhism and due to their booming economy, they are ripe to receive the Dharma.

How come when it comes to Botswana, Dalai Lama is too exhausted and needs to rest so he cancels his trip there? But when it comes to a grueling schedule in Japan, he is not exhausted anymore and can hop on the plane immediately? It shows you Japan has plenty of money and for money no one is exhausted. It is more clear the motivation behind Tibetan leaders/their regime called CTA. Money is the main motivation.

I think it does have some good point, where poor countries in Africa do deserve some Dharma too. May be it has to do with the mindset of the Tibetans in Exile. Since 1959 where they escaped to India, and all these years, they are labeled as victim, and donations/aids are plenty, but they seldom think about contributing to others. That is why I think Tibetan Buddhism seldom go to poor countries.

Oh yes, unfortunately, that is true. An obvious example is the "Thank you Canada" campaign, where Lobsang Sangay flew to Canada for the event to give his speech. So many countries have helped Tibetans, especially Nepal, that has been the main gateway for Tibetans coming out of Tibet to travel to Dharamsala, other parts of India and other countries, as well as hosting tens of thousands of Tibetan refugees since 1959. Nepal definitely deserves a thank you campaign. but no, nothing from the Central Tibetan Administration.

The President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Dr Lobsang Sangay attended the Thank You Canada event in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada on June 12th. The event which is a part of the ‘Thank You Year”, a year-long campaign of the CTA to mark the onset of the His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 60th year in exile.

...

In his address, the President referring to what His Holiness the Dalai Lama had advised, to make new friends, while remembering the old friends, thanked Canada and its people and the friends of Tibet for being with Tibet and its people throughout.

“We are here to say that you have been with us for a long time, bear with us for a little longer” he said, adding that the Tibetan journey that began non-violently 60 years ago under the leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama will continue, but the destination is “much nearer that what we all think.”

“We are here to say that you have been with us for a long time, bear with us for a little longer”. This is what Mr Lobsang Sangay told Canada? 60 years is not long enough? They still have to bear with you longer? What kind of logic is this? I thought he just told everybody that Tibet cause will be ongoing for the next 50 years? Is that considered to be a little longer?

He also said: " the destination is “much nearer than what we all think.” Until now CTA does not even have a dialogue with China yet. How is that considered near? If the destination is near, why is the Tibet cause still need 50 years to achieve? He is just fooling everyone in the west with his speech and try to look good and get more donation from them. That is the only explanation.

Tibet will definitely never be independence. Look at the people that are in the Tibetan government. They have no plans to get independence for Tibet at all. All they care about is their wallet and themselves. Tibetans should just move on with their lives by converting to be an Indian citizen or go overseas to fight for their future. There is no future in India under CTA.

"The destination is much nearer than what we all think"?? Really? Where is this destination? The closing down of the CTA? If Lobsang Sangay is talking about free Tibet, he is very wrong to make this statement. He should know there is no progress in the free Tibet movement after 60 years of struggle and there will never be for the next 60 years.

The CTA is making themselves look so stupid, they are self-hypnotised, they are living in their own world. On what basis do they think they will succeed in their movement? When China was not so strong, they didn't manage to free Tibet. Now that China gets stronger every day, what does the CTA have to fight with China?

Lobsang Sangay's job is quite easy. He doesn't have to plan the future of the Tibetans. He doesn't need to worry about money, he doesn't have to do the economic planning since he doesn't have a country. He is running the CTA like a worker's union. His focus is how to ask for more donations from the west and how to make himself rich before he is kicked out.

I agreed with thaimonk’s opinion. CTA governed is money. Obviously, this corrupted leadership is deeply desire of fortunes. I believe Dalai Lama will not resist if his people had make appropriate arrangements. I think Dalai Lama term of “exhaustion” not due to his long visitations, should be CTA management. 8)

It is very clear to see the CTA is only interested in making money. Preservation and spreading of Buddhism are not their priority. They come out with an excuse to cancel the Dalai Lama's trip to Botswana but not long after that, they let Dalai Lama travels to Japan! If it is not because of money, what is it?

The CTA has been using the Dalai Lama to make money. They make Dalai Lama endorses people who committed crimes. For example the sex scandal lamas, the cult leaders in the US and Japan, Robert Thurman and many more. What the CTA did has a negative impact on the Dalai Lama's reputation.

The CTA is very selfish, they don't have the interest of the Tibetans in their heart. They only want to make money for themselves. While most of the CTA people have already obtained a passport from the western countries, many of the Tibetans in exile are still stateless. If the CTA really cares for the Tibetans, they would have made a plan for the Tibetans and get them a proper status, not a refugee status.

Well, this is already very apparent when after these 60 years and USD billions, the exiles are still languishing in the deplorable camps. Well, for CTA caring is not an option as caring will not bring in cash. If their people lived well then sponsorships may stop and then their retirement plan will not be enough for luxury. But I do wonder about exiles allowing CTA to get away with it. It is really the fault of the people for supporting CTA in its current state.

While CTA is enjoying themselves around the world with their 5-star trips to different countries, Tibetans in exile are burning themselves because they do not see any hope in their future and they would like to make a difference by raising awareness internationally by putting their own life on the line.

After 60 years of being in exile with billions of dollars of support from countries all over the world, is this what CTA can achieve? They are just enjoying themselves with the donations while neer do anything to contribute towards the independence of Tibet. Until now, they can't even get a dialogue from China. There is no progress at all.

Their little effort forces His Holiness the switch his stance because Independence in Tibet will not be achievable with the little help from CTA. They are actually resisting it by creating more troubles for His Holiness when they go around the world and talk bad about China. Either the CTA is stupid or they purposely did this to delay the process of Tibetans going back to Tibet.

What has the CTA done for the past 60 years to preserve and spread Dharma? They are only using the Dalai Lama to make money for them. You only need to pay USD 1million to the CTA to sit next to the Dalai Lama.

The cancellation of the trip to Botswana and soon after that the CTA put the Dalai Lama on the plane to Japan shows very clearly everything the CTA does is motivated by the money. On the other hand, China has invested more money in the restoration of monasteries and preservation of Buddhism more than the CTA.  Just recently, they have started the restoration and renovation o the Potala Palace. China values the Buddhism heritage more than the CTA.

If you ask me who is more sincere in preserving the Dharma, I would say China. No doubt China in the past during the cultural revolution had destroyed many monasteries, but now they are doing something to recover the damage. Look at how degenerated the monks outside of Tibet are, they are involved in sex scandals, political propaganda, etc. Is this how the CTA preserving Tibetan Buddhism?

Japan is one of the CTA  and Dalai Lama resources for a huge chunk of money. While in Japan, he entertained questions he has been answering again and again. It is also amazing how the Dalai Lama can repeat the same old statement and people still find it amusing to make news out of it. "On the issue of the relations between Tibet and China, the Dalai Lama told NHK that China’s effort to suppress Tibet has apparently failed after 70 years. However, he emphasized that even though he will not seek the independence of Tibet, he hopes China will take a practical attitude toward Tibet and improve the bilateral relations through dialogues, according to reports." https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3574642
