Are the majority of people in Shanghai ready to become vegetarian?  Perhaps if for health reasons they would.  It is indeed wonderful that Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel is offering vegetarian meals.  If you are travelling to Shanghai this summer do drop in to try their vegetarian dishes.

SHANGHAI, China - This summer, Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel’s signature Cantonese and Shanghai restaurant Yue is helping its guests be as healthy as possible with a newly crafted a la carte seasonal menu entirely composed of Vegetarian dishes. Situated just minutes from both Shanghai’s historical Bund and also its Lujiazui Financial District in Pudong, the hotel has teamed up with famed Buddhist Master Xing Yun to help boost healthier living this summer.

Yue’s Executive Chef Andy Deng has worked with 86-year-old Buddhist Master Xing Yun, the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, to create and launch the new locally-sourced vegetarian menu now available for lunch and dinner. Throughout the menu, no MSG, garlic or additives are used – bringing out the full flavor of the individual fresh vegetables.

With a focus on using the natural nutrition of a whole host of vegetables to improve health and boost internal happiness, Master Xing Yun has shared some of his favorite healthy recipes from down the years with Chef Andy Deng. These include a Rich Soup with a variety of locally-farmed mushrooms such as the spicy-scented Matsutake, Morsel and white Enoki mushrooms along with savory Kelp, sweet chunks of Pumpkin and fresh Taro root. Another dish inspired by one of Master Xing Yun’s recipes is the Crispy-fried Lotus Root filled with meaty King Oyster Mushrooms.

The hearty Fig and Sea Coconut Soup with slices of almonds is one of the highlights of the menu - ideal for eating in the summer months for good digestion. Known for its abilities to improve longevity, the “Classic” Seaweed Roll filled with Chinese yams, seaweed, chili picked from nearby Hangzhou and fresh basil is set to be one of the menu’s favorites.

The signature Yue restaurant is situated on the fourth floor of the hotel with a contemporary Chinese feel to the main dining room and numerous private spaces.

The new Vegetarian menu is available for lunch and dinner until the end of September at which point the summer fresh ingredients will be replaced with seasonal Autumn dishes. Yue offers lunch every day from 11:30AM-2:00PM and dinner from 5:30PM- 10:00PM.

This is a very tempting menu of the most delicious vegetarian dishes ever from a restaurant near the famous  Bund and commercial district of Shanghai. On top of it there is a strong spiritual flavour. The Executive Chef of the Shanghai Sheraton Hongkou has worked with the the spiritual founder of Fo Guang Shan, Master Xing Yun, to create this menu.

It is most heartwarming to realize that being vegetarian stems from a compassionate wish not to harm or hurt animals. Here,we are tasting wholesome food, with the right mix and balance of healthiness and spirituality. The food has no preservatives or MSG. It uses the natural nutrition of fresh food including vegetables. The dishes are designed to improve health and boost "internal happiness".

Wonderful! Many places are having healthy food and also acknowledging that non meat eaters are on the rise. No demand, no supply right... Just like this school, teaching the young to be healthy and it helps them too, mentally. I make my children have less meat and more healthy greens whenever we go out for meals. They actually love it! And its great for detox too!

This is wonderful to know, this might as well be the starting point to encourage the public to have a vegetarian diet as we all know for the fact that it is healthier. At the same time being a vegetarian will change one mind set that all living beings are equal and eventually with this it will change someone to be more loving, caring and compassionate in the context of spiritual or non-spiritual.

This is really awesome. More and more places are offering vegetarian dishes. There are many reasons why people choose to be vegetarian. Some because of religions, some due to health issue, some care for the animals and could not bear to see the animal suffer, so they decided not to eat meat and many many other reasons. With places like the  Shanghai Sheraton Hongkou offering vegetarian dishes, vegetarian friend and non vegetarian friend can have a joyful meal together. There is no need to drag a non vegetarian to a vegetarian place. Hopefully that in the future, all restaurant will offer vegetarian dishes as part of their menu to encourage people to eat a healthy meal.

The Chinese had long history of “food science” for balance “ying” and “yang” of human body. The monastery orders in China take these theories and develop the whole balance diet based on vegetable. This secret had been preserved in the general Chinese society and monastery. During the turbulent years in Chinese history part of these knowledge’s had been lost. With current revivers of Chinese economy and western influent, meat base diet was the order of the day.
It is really good news to have known that this knowledge was still kept by Master Xing Yun and his willingness to share it with the Shanghai public and particularly with Chef Andy Deng.
This will create awareness of alternative diet to the public be it for health or spiritual purposes.  When more people switch from meat base diet to plant base diet without feeling of being at “lost”. This will create chain effect that causes more people to consider investing in vegetarian restaurant.

People are drawn to vegetarianism by all sorts of motives. Some of us want to live longer, healthier lives or do our part to reduce pollution. Others have made the switch because we want to preserve Earth’s natural resources or because we’ve always loved animals and are ethically opposed to eating them. It’s so wonderful to see more vegetarian restaurants and eateries are sprouting around the regions in recent years. For whatever reasons the management of Shanghai Sheraton Hongkou one decided to promote vegetarian dishes, they have indeed created the cause of awareness of non-killing and harming amongst the Chinese nations. Therefore it will further lead to loving and compassion.

The summer menu looks delicious and very tempting too. It's a great step for Shanghai Sheraton Hongkou to come out with new ideas and in a way to promote vegetarian.
Will definitely try it if ever I am in Shanghai. And for those staying in this hotel don't need to go out looking for vegetarian dishes.
The hotel have also created awareness for people to be meat free and to prevent killing of animals. If demand is not there then the killing stops

For a 5-star hotel like Sheraton located in Shanghai to undertake a project to experiment with vegetarian food and serving them in their restaurant, is a huge feat towards compassionate actions promoting vegetarianism. We should be proud of reputable hotels who takes the risk to serve vegetarian dishes to their guests. They won't just gamble away such risk to loose their regular customers unless they are certain their clients will like them.

Wonderful news that the management of Shanghai Sheraton Hongkou decided to promote vegetarian dishes.
People do feel symphathetic toward the welfare of animals and is the primary motive to being vegetarian.
When we refrain from killing and harming animals ,this ethical behavior has positive consequences not only for individual but for society as a whole.

It is encouraging to know that Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel is offering vegetarian meals for its customers this summer.  Vegetarianism is definitely the healthier way to eat.  By teaming up with Buddhist Master Xing Yun, famed for his teachings and the founding of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou is in a better position to promote their new vegetarian meals. Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel had indirectly received the endorsement of their vegetarian meals from Master Xing Yin through this partnership!
