I mean, any other lama could have taken the initiative to do this, but why is it that the Dalai Lama himself has to go and teach?

Dalai Lama starts annual teaching for Tibetan youths on Buddhism
HT Correspondent , Hindustan Times  Dharamsala, June 27, 2013

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, began a two-day event of introduction to Buddhism for Tibetan youths at the Tibetan Children's Village school here on Thursday.

Over 2,000 Tibetan youths, including college students, are attending the annual teaching. The teaching is aimed to create more awareness about Tibetan Buddhism and culture among the youth.

The spiritual leader will explain excerpts from his book, “Opening the Eye of New Awareness”, which he wrote in early 1960s. The book gives survey of general Buddhist teachings and lays emphasis on the importance of seeking the shared values of different religions rather than focussing on the differences.

Addressing the youth, the Dalai Lama said, “This teaching is being conducted in the hope of providing new awareness about how to generate warm-heartedness and lead a happy life. Modern education and wealth can provide us food and shelter, but they cannot bring us lasting happiness. Happiness can only be achieved through exchange of love and affection towards one another,” he added.

He said people share the same mutual desire to be loved and have same potential to be happy and these could be achieved only through nurturing basic virtues like love, affection and kindness.

Every year the HHDL teaches the youth in the Tibetan Childrens Village (TCV). TCV was established 49 yrs ago. It is now a thriving integrated educational community for destitute Tibetan children in exile, as well as for hundreds escaping Tibet each year.
HHDL said " The children are the seeds of the future of Tibet " . On the 35th anniversary of TCV, HHDL also said that " the future direction of our program will be in the field of further education in specialised studies to meet the human resource needs of the community during our period in exile and more importantly when the time comes for us to go back to our homeland ....... We shall endeavour further to improve the quality of our children's education and their cultural and social upbringing without necessarily sacrificing our exile life style"

It is meritorious for those children who's be able to attend Dharma teaching more over the teaching is given by HHTDL Himself. In this degenerated time we need to give our children not just technological advance gadgets or samsaric needs but also we need to highlight to them the importance of the Dharma so that in the near future hopefully they will be somebody useful to the society. If it doesn't work out that way at least they won't go around committing crime and be a bad person. Human being is a habituation creature, so if we as a parents start to inject some spiritual practice into their schedule it will eventually bare some results.

Discipline is highly required for the success of everything,Whatever it may be, without discipline the youths will ruin themselves.
The Buddha pointed out that individual need to think deeply about things for themselves and consider the long term effects of their actions.Rather than trying to please everyone else, which is an impossible endeavour
youths should develop the discriminating wisdom enabling them to set wise priorities  and discern the right course of action in particular situations.
These youths should take this meritorious opportunity by listening to HHTDL's teachings to strenghten their spiritual path.

These students are very fortunate to receive teachings from His Holiness himself. His Holiness mentioned that modern education and wealth can provide us food and shelter, but they cannot bring us lasting happiness. Happiness can only be achieved through exchange of love and affection towards one another. These youths are our future generation and it is important to educate them on the value of love, kindness and compassion and that they will cultivate this into their lives are grow up to be caring, responsible and non violence adults.

The question here is, any other Lama could have given this talk and teach these students Buddhism,  but why is it that the Dalai Lama has to do it personally? Couldnt another Lama or another professor take over the Dalai Lama's role in educating these young people? Or is it that they lack people so much that the Dalai Lama himself has to step up and take up this job? Sure, it is a great blessing to the students on the surface, but if you think deeper, it just shows the lack of a sense of responsibility that the CTA has. If they are doing a great job at this department, they wouldnt need the Dalai Lama to do this personally.
