Peace is Universal Religion
« on: November 08, 2013, 03:50:34 AM »
Peace is the core essence of all religions. Every religion has something substantial to contribute to the cause of world peace, for the beautiful doctrine of peace is deeply embedded in all the religious scriptures. Hinduism says: “As rivers flow into the ocean but cannot make the vast overflow, so flow the streams of the sense-world into the sea of peace” (Bhagwad Gita 2:70). Christianity says: “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Bible, Matthew 5:9). Judaism says: “God is peace, His name is peace, and all is bound together in peace” (Zohar, Leviticus 10B). Buddhism propounds: “He is a peacemaker, a lover of peace, impassioned for peace, a speaker of words that make for peace” (Digha Nikaya, Tevigga Sutta).
The same holds true of Islam, a religion that has its deep roots in peace. The very word “Islam” comes from the root word “silm” meaning peace. That’s why the Holy Quran calls Islam “the path of peace” (Quran: 5:16) and enjoins upon Muslims to “enter into peace completely and perfectly and not to follow the footsteps of Satan” (2:208). This verse reveals to Muslims that the only way to implement true Islam in their lives is by living in complete peace and harmony with all mankind. Any act or belief that goes against this core principle, in any way, is brazenly un-Islamic and undoubtedly contradictory to the teachings of the Quran.

According to this principle, we are obliged to be at peace with ourselves — by spiritual
reflections and mindful living, and to be at peace with those around us — by behaving kindly and affectionately to others. Both these universal values of peacemaking are integral parts of Islam — the path of peace.

In reality, religion despite its peace objective, is the cause of much intolerance, discrimination, wars and deaths. So as idealistic as we would like to believe, the truth is that in the name of religion much heinous acts.

The Ban of dorje shugden is clearly an example. But they are not the only ones. Even Christians. I have an extract below from the article I read. Please check out more on the link.

I understand why some and many more growing do not take on any religion and prefer to be atheist or free-thinkers. Sad...

An extract:

"...Todd Johnson, of Gordon Conwell's Centre for the Study of Global Christianity, estimates 70 million Christians have died for their faith, 45 million of them in the 20th century.
John Allen notes that ''this boom in religious violence is still very much a growth industry. Christians today are by some order of magnitude the most persecuted religious body on the planet,'' suffering not just martyrdom but all forms of intimidation and oppression in record numbers.
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom, which monitors religious persecution and names the worst offenders in an annual report, listed 16 nations guilty of ''heinous and systematic'' offences in its 2012 report...."

The word peace has been cheapened and it is definitely overused.  :-\

We could easily click "LIKE" on a Facebook post that promotes world peace and pick on our neighbour who has a Buddha image placed in the front garden. We could sing "We Are The World" until the cow jumps over the moon and still shun a person of a particular skin colour. We all want peace but it is at the expense of annihilating other views and beliefs that we do don't "LIKE". That is why we have never achieved outer peace because we were never peaceful within.

Thus, a practice like Dorje Shugden is one that removes inner turmoil so that when we have inner peace, religion will not be used as a reason to start a political war but integrated fully into our spiritual path.  8)

in all the major religions today, peace and kindness is the core of the teachings. However, I do agree with @diamondGirl, religions has been the reasons for many conflicts. Yes, Dorje Shugden ban has created a lot of unhappiness, but there are bigger issues especially those inter-religions. Different religion, from the history, we learn that there are many "holy wars", and these unnecessary wars are all caused by human, not the religion itself. It is sad to say that, all teachings are kind but the human twisted it and make it for personal gain :(

It does makes sense that peace is universal religion. All religions have a common objective and that is to give people a higher purpose in life. As such, we strive to understand the bigger picture of our existence so that we know where we are ultimately heading. This understanding gives us hope when we go through difficulties in our lives.

All of us want peace in our lives. But in order to realise the peace, we need to heal ourselves emotionally. When we are healed, we will feel at peace. When we are truly at peace, we can then create peace around us. Religion plays a significant role in helping us heal and achieve this peace.

Hence, I believe the progress of spiritual practitioners can be measured by how much peace is ultimately created from them.

Religion definite play a role in people's search for world peace. The moral principles and values contained in the teachings of great religious teachers are essential factors for the reduction and ultimate eradication of greed, hatred, and delusion which form the root cause of various conflicts and wars, both within and without. Within oneself, these three evil or unwholesome roots bring about great unrest in the mind, resulting in physical outbursts of violence culminating in global warfare.

The world cannot have peace until nations and people begin to reduce their selfish desires for more and more material possessions, give up their racial arrogance, and eliminate their madness for worldly power. Material wealth alone cannot bring peace and happiness to the minds of people. The key to real and lasting peace lies in "mental dis armaments" disarming the mind from all kinds of "poisonous" defilements such as greed, hatred, jealousy, egotism, etc.

Religion not only inspires and guides people but also provides them with the necessary tools to reduce greed with the practice of charity; to overcome hate and aversion with loving-kindness; and to remove ignorance with the development of wisdom and insight in order to under stand the true nature of beings and "see things as they really are."

For the cause of humanity and for the cause of peace, let us hope that all our religious leaders will stretch out their hands in friendship to one another and to all people irrespective of race or creed with a genuine feeling of love and brotherhood--to work for a peaceful world and to work for humanity.

In Buddhist teachings, greed, hatred, and delusion are known, for good reason, as the three poisons, the three unwholesome roots, and the three fires. These metaphors suggest how dangerous afflictive thoughts and emotions can be if they are not understood and transformed. Greed refers to our selfishness, misplaced desire, attachment, and grasping for happiness and satisfaction outside of ourselves. Hatred refers to our anger, our aversion and repulsion toward unpleasant people, circumstances, and even toward our own uncomfortable feelings. Delusion refers to our dullness, bewilderment, and misperception; our wrong views of reality. The poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion are a byproduct of ignorance—ignorance of our true nature, the awakened heart of wisdom and compassion.

Arising out of our ignorance, these poisonous states of mind then motivate nonvirtuous and unskillful thoughts, speech, and actions, which cause all manner of suffering and unhappiness for ourselves and others. We will not have peace not until we realize our own greed, hatred and delusion. And imagine if there are no religion in this world, imagine without all the necessary teachings. I guess the world will not function at all.

The world badly needs peace and harmony. There are so much agony caused by violent conflict, war and bloodshed today. When there is darkness, light is needed.
Peace in the world can be achieved if there is peace within individuals.Agitation and peace cannot co-exist.More and more members of society must be peaceful for society to be peaceful. All persons must be free to profess and follow their faith. In doing so,however, they must be careful not to neglect the practice of the essence of their religion, not to disturb others by their own religious practices, and not to condemn or belittle other faiths. If proper importance is given to the essence of all religions and greater tolerance is shown for their superficial aspects, conflicts can be minimized and peace remain.

The world ought to learn from Singapore.  Although Singapore is a small island she has Peace, harmony and order.  If all the nations in the world were to be like Singapore the world will become a much better place to live in.  There is no need for war, killing and violence but peaceful co-existence as what is preached by all the world religion.

Friday prayer in the Al-Nahdah Mosque of the Harmony Centre in Singapore was typical, except in one sense .. the center itself. Opened in 2006 by no less than the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the event was celebrated by the heads of all major religions in the country. Next to our praying hall, stands a center that calls for peaceful coexistence among the followers of all faiths. Members include Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Hindus and Sikhs. They make a Council that emphasizes inter-faith dialogue and engagement among the multi-racial and multi-religious society of Singapore.

If there is one thing that sets Singapore apart from the rest of our world it is the way this island-nation makes you feel. If I may put it in three words (written in “Tropical Green”) I would say: Peace, Harmony and Order.

Peace is one of the most exploited and overused words. All religions, ideologies, political systems and organized groups pretend to serve peace. Wars and brutal rules were justified as means to peaceful ends. A war criminal like Israel’s late Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was called by the leader of the “Free World”, Gorge W. Bush, at the highest Israel’s brutal invasion of Gaza “Man of Peace”! And it is not uncommon for peace movements to use not so peaceful methods to achieve their goals.

Therefore, it feels really great when you visit a place like Singapore, where “peace” really means peace. For forty years, since its independence, in 1965, and for one hundred and fifty years before that, this island never fought among its different races or with its neighbors, or was part of any conflict, regional or international.

This is a nation busy studying, working, building and planning for a better future. It does this in peace, even if the world around it sat itself on fire.

Harmony: Now that is another hard to find value. Look around Singapore. Religious and racial issues are killing and burning people, worship places, and whole neighborhoods in Burma, India, Pakistan and Sir Lanka, to name some. Militants, fundamentalists and terrorists are spreading hate and death like viruses among the populations.

Even political parties, army generals and public officials are engaged in this destructive mode. Not here, not in this green, peaceful island. Harmony is keyword. Harmony  among its very diversified population is the secret!

In schools, work, media, religious and political spheres, it is beyond prohibited to show any bias, let alone hate, against fellow citizens on the basis of their color, religion or race.

The whole democratic system is based on equality, respect and ... “harmony.”

Order is not just a system. It is a way of life. It is mentality. It is attitude. It is ... everything. You take the “metro” to work, all your steps are in perfect order —from buying the ticket, to standing on right or left waiting lines at the door of the train — the middle is assigned for passengers getting out — to the exact timing of the train and the connecting buses, to your timetable at work or school, to your appointments even with the taxi or reservation with restaurant or barber.

You don’t even need security to oversee order. In fact, during my week there, I never saw a single police car or officer in the street. Law and order, it seems, is in the hearts and minds of Singaporeans. They have overgrown the need for overseers.

If we integrate Buddha's teachings into our daily life, we will be able to solve all our inner problems and attain a truly peaceful mind. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we first establish peace within our minds by training in spiritual paths, outer peace will come naturally; but if we do not, world peace will never be achieved, no matter how many people campaign for it.

I am unsure whether is it good news or bad news. However if the so called free-thinker live by being responsible and caring for others, so much the better. Unbiased and support the common view that any laws that benefit all regardless of skin colors.

My point is that reality does not match the theory of what religion is.

Probably more and more people are not putting the teachings into practice. People who believe in one thing and do the opposite. In fact not many are not religious nor spiritual. Religious and spiritual are thought to be not beneficial or cannot apply in workplace. You would be considered weak and non-competitive.
