South Korea's oldest licensed driver on the road is Park Ki-jun who passed his driving test and was issued a driver’s license at 99-year-old; the Gongju police station reported.

Park obtained a motorcycle license in May last year (2012) and passed the car driving test five months later.

He is 100 years old this year and is still very active. He is riding his motorcycle and driving around town in his car.

So, what is the secret of his longevity and excellent health?

He mentioned food and living conditions.

In South Korea, Jeju Island has the highest numbers of population that live over 100-year-old (Centenarians).

There is a perception that the island’s cuisine might have something to do with the longevity of its population is shining the spotlight on the health benefits and wholesome influence of Jeju’s food culture.

Other places in Asia that recorded high numbers of Centenarians are Chengmai of Hainan Island in China and Japan's Okinawa Island.

International Expert Committee on Population Aging and Longevity (IECPAL)  recognizes Hainan as a "world longevity island" and Chengmai as "world longevity area".

An IECPAL working group released a report revealing similarities between Chengmai and other areas known for longevity. The report says that while genetic factors exert a 20-30 percent influence, environmental factors account for at least 70 percent of influence over life expectancy.

You agree with IECPAL's report?

Dear DS Star

This is an interesting article but i don't really see the relevance to Buddhism? It would perhaps help in future if you added an introductory paragraph explaining the relevance as you see it? The longevity mentioned in the article refers to the food culture but does not even mention what kind of food - so the article doesn't really give much added value. Just a thought.

Cheers!

It may seems like this article has no value of Buddhism in it but the very fact it touches on longevity and the secret of it has the connection...

I posted it with intention of inviting others to discuss this topic knowing that a healthy living style is more important than the eating habits as mentioned by the article.

That being said, a Hindu yogi can live up to a week buried underground with minimum oxygen is just another proof of how a human being can control his physical body with a controlled mind.

Similarly, a healthy, calm and well-controlled mind can prolong one's life span, as a healthy mind makes a healthy body.

Here are 2 examples of a well-controlled mind:
