SHIMLA: The amount spent on providing security to Tibetan spiritual leaders - the Dalai Lama and the Karmapa - continues to be a secret.

A legislator's attempt in the state assembly to get the information from the state government Wednesday proved futile.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal launched a scathing attack on the central government for not providing timely information on the amount spent on the two Buddhist leaders' security and said it has so far failed to reply in this regard.

"It's the inefficiency of the central government officials not to provide us information despite our repeated requests," Dhumal said while responding to a question of Kaul Singh Thakur of the Congress on how much money is being spent annually by the central and state governments.

He said as a number of central security agencies are also involved in their security, it is difficult to estimate how much amount is being spent.

The chief minister, while speaking at the chief ministers' conference on internal security in Delhi Feb 1, asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to clarify whether the Tibetans settled in Himachal were "exiles or our guests".

"We will set up a Tibetan refugee unit in the state intelligence department in Shimla and a refugee cell in Dharamsala to monitor the activities of the exiles settled," Dhumal said.

The chief minister also requested the central government to fully reimburse the expenditure being incurred on security of the Dalai Lama and the 17th Karmapa Lama, Ogyen Trinley Dorje.

"At present, only a small part of the expenditure is being reimbursed by the external affairs ministry in case of the Dalai Lama while the entire expenditure on security of the Karmapa is being borne by the state," he said.

More than 50 years ago, the Dalai Lama fled into exile and established his government-in-exile in Dharamsala. The government is not recognised by any other country.

Every cent spent on keeping HHDL safe is well spent. That's my feeling any ways...

All icon's of peace and harmony always seem to get death threats. They don't seem to have the karma to rejoice in other people's good works. Like Martin Luther King, Jr. (1968 April 4) who was a U.S. civil rights activist, Folke Bernadotte (1948) who was a Middle East peace mediator, Munir Said Thalib, (2004) who was a human rights and anti-corruption activist... all these people were killed trying whilst on the path to do good, and the greater good at that!

As the icon for world peace, I am glad to hear that HHDL has a security. It doesn't really matter how much is spent. We can't put a price on keeping a living Buddha alive, can we? 

Technically speaking, there is no way that anyone can hurt or kill HHDL. HHDL has full control over his death and he is a living Buddha. Those protecting Him, really accumulate a lot of merit by doing their security job well.

Imagine the amount of merit you collect by having the mindset that you would die for a Buddha. Or that you would protect the holder of the dharma. How amazing.

Reminds me of Naropa, how he jumped off the high cliff and broke all of his bones and joints, experiencing immense pain. All because he wanted to receive teachings from his teacher, Tilopa. That feeling that you would go all the way just for the Dharma, physically, mentally or psychologically. Okay, I digress.

Isn't it a bit weird that the Tibetan government wants to be reimbursed on the expenditure used to protect HHDL? Unless I read that wrongly, of course. It should be a meritorious (and merry-torious!) donation to fund HHDL's security. Does the government view HHDL as a living Buddha or as a person..?

To be very frank and I am not trying to be disrespectful, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is an enlightened being/ Buddha, therefore His Holiness definitely doesn't have the karma to be harmed, and not to be sound bitchy or anything, the assassins or killers do not even have the merits to be near with His Holiness, so let's not talk about hurting Him . But having to say that, it doesn't mean that His Holiness's safety isn't important, because of course His safety is very important! Definitely it is important, no doubt. May the King of Dharma continue to live long and turn the wheel of Dharma to all sentient beings.

Anything that happened to us is due to karma, and the same apply to HHDL too, right? Even with tight security, when the karma ripened, no security can stop it.

If Dalai Lama cannot be harm, why need to spend so much on security? HHDL has ban Dorje Shugden practice cos he said Dorje Shugden is a spirit of the dark force which if he practice it, it can shorten his life. If that is the case, better he engage more protectors to protect him than having such an extensive security, cos no one can destroy or subdue the "evil" Dorje Shugden.

For instance, the evil dalie lame could be safely kept in the garbage bin of history, where he could not perpetrate his crimes against humanity.
