Title: Differences between Dalai Lama & CTA president put Tibetan politics in tailspin
Post by: thaimonk on December 05, 2018, 07:51:32 PM
This interesting article has much food for thought:

1. Dalai Lama is angry and shouting expletives as Lobsang Sangay. Everyone knows the Dalai Lama is in full control. He claims he's retired from politics but this is just to say what the west wants to hear so he can continue getting funding. It looks good to the west that he voluntarily gave up power and this makes him look progressive. But the Dalai Lama controls everything from behind and if you don't agree with his decisions, he will be furious. Every Tibetan knows this well.

2. Interesting the article mentions Dalai Lama's cancer is terminal. Everyone knew this but the Dalai Lama tries to cover this point up. Why? Who knows? What is the problem if people knows he has cancer. Tibetan govt tries to play it down.

3. Dalai Lama is angry as his successor will only be on his terms and no one else may dictate to him the terms as Lobsang Sangay tried to do so since it is not a democracy in practice. As all Tibetans know, the Dalai Lama is the Lama-King and he has full power and no one may contradict him. The face he shows the west (soft, friendly, diplomatic, easy-going, democratic) is all just for the west. The face Dalai Lama shows his Tibetan people (fierce, King, angersome, in charge and must be obeyed) is how it really is. Tibetans know the Dalai Lama controls everything and fully manages all politics. People are not happy with this but dare not speak up as there is no democracy.

Writer Rajeev Sharma is telling the situation like it really is. Finally the truth is coming out. Tibetan government in exile is a regime in every sense of the world that depends on all the hundreds of millions of free dollars it has been taking from the west, Japan, Australia and so on. It exists on free money. It is not a good government and has failed all negotiations with China due to the Tibetan leaders' arrogance. Why arrogance? They think the world will force China to do what Tibetans leaders want and that they are so important on everyone's agenda. Tibetans are on no one's top agenda and China is an economic and military super power. China will not and will never kowtow to the Tibetan demands. It is the Tibetans who must beg China to be friends and get some concessions if at all possible. No country has ever dared stand up to USA, but China has and China is growing in power yearly. Everyone is scrambling to be China's friend and saying goodbye to the Tibetan cause. Tibetan cause is the thing of the past and no economic benefits to support Tibetan cause.

These days every country votes in leaders that can better their country's economy due to world recession. So every country has to do business and trade and aid with China to improve their economy. If you side with the Dalai Lama and Tibetan govt in exile in India, what do you get? Nothing! So leaders of every nation realize this now and will continue to make friends with China and say goodbye to the Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama on a personal level may be rich, famous and sells a lot of books, but that won't get Tibet back. That won't win the support of leaders of the free world and other nations.

Differences between Dalai Lama and CTA president put Tibetan politics in a tailspin
By Rajeev Sharma, November 27, 2018 SouthasianMonitor.com

Tibetan politics is in a tailspin as there are signs of serious differences between the 14th Dalai Lama, unquestionably the supreme and undisputed leader of the Tibetans, and Lobsang Sangay, president of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).

The immediate provocation is the unceremonious cancellation of the 13th Religious Conference of the Schools of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon Tradition, which was scheduled between November 29 and December 1 year in Dharamshala. Insiders have revealed that the conference was cancelled by Lobsang without consulting the Dalai Lama.

Even more intriguing is the timing of the move. Knowledgeable sources in the Tibetan establishment in India disclosed that Lobsang made the move while the Dalai Lama was travelling back from Japan, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to do anything to stop it.

Tibetan politics is turning out to be a cloak-and-dagger mystery. According to sources, Lobsang waited until the Dalai Lama was on his way to the airport before ordering the Department of Religion and Culture to cancel the event. Interestingly, the cancellation of the conference is available by way of an announcement in English on the CTA website.

The CTA’s Department of Religion and Culture announced that owing to the sudden demise of the supreme head of the Nyingma tradition, Kathok Getse Rinpoche, who passed away this week in Nepal and in respecting the sentiments of the followers of Nyingma tradition, the 13th Religious Conference of the Schools of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon Tradition was being indefinitely postponed.

The department cited that many lamas and representatives of the Nyingma tradition were unable to participate because of Rinpoche’s passing away.

On November 22, the CTA organised a prayer service to mourn the demise of Rinpoche, the 7th supreme head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Rinpoche passed away following an accident on November 19 in Pharping, Nepal. He was 64.

Sources say the Dalai Lama is furious with Lobsang Sangay for trying to take credit for his negotiations with China about returning to Tibet.

Sangay claimed that the Dalai Lama has failed for 60 years in negotiations with China, but he has the power and ability to succeed. This is also an indication of how weak the Dalai Lama’s current position is. Sangay knows that the Dalai Lama has been negotiating with China about returning and he’s trying to position himself to take credit for it. Had this happened a few years ago the Dalai Lama would have had him removed, but since his cancer has become terminal, Sangay has been consolidating his position among the exiled community. He controls the press department of the Tibetan government-in-exile and has done so since he ousted Dicki Chhoyang.

For the record, the head of the department, which cancelled the conference, was appointed by Sangay.

By the time the Dalai Lama returned to India the event was cancelled and announcements were issued to the media while he was still in the flight, which would have prevented a confirmation with the Tibetan leader and nothing could have been done to stop it. The reason given for the cancellation was the death of a senior monk.

Sources said that the real reason for the CTA president to keep the Dalai Lama in the dark was because the latter would decide again whether to back the Karmapa as his successor. The Karmapa issue has been a major reason of discord between the Dalai Lama and the CTA president. Sources spoke about a telephonic conversation between the Dalai Lama and Sangay in this regard on November 22 when the former was in Japan.

During this conversation, furious arguments broke out between the two. The Dalai Lama is said to have “shouted” at Sangay, saying that the Karmapa wouldn’t be chosen and that he wouldn’t be dictated terms by anyone. In this conversation, the Dalai Lama used some expletives in Tibetan language which he did not expect Sangay to understand as the CTA president doesn’t know the language. However, a Lobsang aide is said to have translated what the Dalai Lama said.

This marks the most significant power play ever between the different factions within the Tibetan exile leadership. In other words, it’s now an all-out battle between the Dalai Lama and Lobsang Sangay over the future of the exile community, which may worsen in the days to come.

From the trend and many facts we can in recent years, Tibetan cause is as good as lost due to the rise of China.

The rise of China is directly harming the cause of the free money Tibetan government in exile is getting, as the ‘sponsors’ are now befriending China. The last thing all the countries would want to do now is to offend China, even Trump is working hard to cease fire with China on the trade war.

Like what thaimonk said above, since Tibetan government in exile exists on free money, very soon they will be digging a dry well. And very soon, they will not survive without the most essential element. It is just a matter of time.  :-X

Lobsang Sangay is the worst 'leader' the Tibetan exiles have ever had.  :-\Since he was 'voted' into his position, he has done nothing for the Tibetans in and out of Tibet. People know this now. China is no close to bargaining with Lobsang Sangay or the Dalai Lama because China has all the power. Dalai Lama being the power from the throne in his small exile world of Tibetans will not tolerate Lobsang Sangay doing things behind his back as Lobsang Sangay did recently again. Dalai Lama expects to approve of all decisions in the exile government. If not, Dalai Lama will be furious and will show it privately also to his own people. There is no democracy.

This article is explosive!!!

Once again, Rajeev Sharma alleges of HHDL's cancer which as I've heard from other sources is true so, why is the Tibetan exile government hiding the fact of the Dalai Lama's cancer?

Maybe it is because Lobsang Sangay doesn't want the Dalai Lama's popularity to increase with public sympathy, therefore downplaying the Dalai Lama???

What he also says about Sangay "trying to position himself to take credit for" HHDL's return to China is quite true, when news at the end of October reported CTA having "backdoor" negotiations with China. That, and all his travels to "Thank you Netherlands, Thank you Whoever and Whatever" is another ploy to turn international support against the Dalai Lama. That seems to fit Rajiv Sharma's expose on the power struggle between Dalai Lama and Lobsang Sangay!

If this article's allegations are true, then it does appear that the CTA is crumbling from the inside and the end of the authoritarian rule of the Central Tibetan Administration may be just right around the corner!!!

There are just alot of drama coming from our Sikyong Mr Lobsang Sangay. Did he really think that he is the head of CTA now? He is so naive to believe that His Holiness the Dalai Lama will let go of the power and go behind the scene? I guess now he learnt his lesson. I guess he had it coming when he decided to cancel the event without His Holiness's agreement.

From this incident, we can see that Mr Lobsang is now not in the same boat as His Holiness the Dalai Lama anymore. He is not supporting what His Holiness is working for Tibet which is Umaylam. He has been going around the world taking bad about China. His effort is not helping His Holiness and the fact he is delaying Tibetans' return to Tibet.

Why is Mr Lobsang Sangay is doing this? He does not wish for Tibetan's return to Tibet? He must have a hidden agenda for doing so. Perhaps he is afraid to go back to Tibet under China because China will not allow CTA to be in China anyhow. That means no more free money from western countries anymore.

According to the international current affairs magazine 'The Diplomat', Rajeev Sharma who is a New Delhi-based journalist-author has been writing on international relations, foreign policy, strategic affairs, security and terrorism for over two decades. He has published seven books so far, five of them non-fiction, two fiction. He is one of the writers of The Diplomat. He is established.

If CTA really wants to refute Rajeev Sharma's writing, they should at least gather more solid evidence and arguments to counter back someone who has been writing for two decades and established his name. One leader's demise which is the Nyingma head can make a conference involving so many leaders from all the Tibetan Buddhism schools cancel? Sounds suspicious. More ridiculous is it was postponed indefinitely. The key is that it's postponed indefinitely. If it was cancel to respect the dead Nyingma head, they should have immediatly reset the date. But they didn't.

This is not some international event or external big occurrence such as a war has broke out between India and China or any internal war taking place within India, or any natural disaster happening that makes the whole conference have to be cancelled without a proposed date to commence again be given.

It could be that what the writer has exposed is actually what has happened. It hurts. It embarrassed CTA and Lobsang Sangay so much, and CTA is using their usual way to "punish" and condemn those who are not buying their lies, not listen to their orders, just like how they has targeted Shugden people. CTA has to immediately condems Rajeev Sharma's article. How can such a senior and respected writer be so negligent. I don't think he was negligent but told the truth. The dirty truth about CTA.

Too bad for CTA.

Now Lobsang Sangay is showing his true colour, he openly goes against the Dalai Lama. He claims he is loyal to the Dalai Lama but he is not. The Middle Way approach is all over the CTA website, but Lobsang Sangay is still supporting the Free Tibet movement and activists, so what does he really want? It is very obvious he doesn't agree with what the Dalai Lama wants.

Lobsang Sangay as the president of the Tibetans in exile has not done anything good for the Tibetans. He is busy making use of his position to gain personal interest. He has got himself some properties in the US and a foreign, while the Tibetans in exile are still stateless and are still refugees.

Lobsang Sangay and the CTA accuse Dorje Shugden followers are against the Dalai Lama. Lobsang Sangay himself is also against the Dalai Lama! He doesn't want the Middle Way Approach otherwise he won't be still supporting the free Tibet movement and activists. To Lobsang Sangay, money is more important than anything else.

The Dalai Lama sounds out of control.

And Lobsang Sangay's been sniffing European air for too long if he thinks the CTA is a real democracy and he can go around cancelling events and meetings that might lead to the announcement of a new leader to succeed the Dalai Lama and oops, it might not be Lobsang Sangay.

Oh well, it's now only a matter of time before Lobsang Sangay is deposed and out the door because all Tibetans know it's really the Dalai Lama in charge.

How DARE the Sikyong cancel without consulting Chenrezig! Seems like his megalomanic tendencies is escalating.

But let's take a step back and look at the REAL reason why Mr. Sikyong cancelled this conference.

This is an important conference where all the heads of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon would meet to discuss crucial issues that would impact Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetans. As Mr. Sikyong is not a spiritual leader, he would not have any say in this conference and he is afraid that he will lose his power and influence. So Mr. Sikyong has used the demise of the supreme head of the Nyingma tradition, Kathok Getse Rinpoche, as a convenient means to stay in power under the guise of being respectful. After all, the longer he is in power, the fatter his bank account.

I have never once liked this Lobsang Sangay and always thought he was really sleazy and well... what can I say... my guess was right! He is not only a sleazebag, but he is also a SNAKE! Looks like he is trying to override His Holiness the Dalai Lama!

He is very daring, perhaps he sees himself taking over and being in charge once the Dalai Lama is gone? I think they will be more bad news coming from the paradise land. And I am sorry to say but I feel I am witnessing the CTA's and Tibetan people's karma coming back like the wheel of sharp weapons!

The Tibetan leadership created so much disharmony and so much conflict and pain with the Dorje Shugden ban imposed by the Dalai Lama... they created so much grief, so what do they expect? The Dalai Lama of all person, I am sorry to say, and with all due respect should know and would know that it will all come back to them. Perhaps, he is prepared but I bet he wasn't prepared to be backstabbed by the Sikyong he moulded to be his puppet of a secular leader. We'll need to keep our eyes and ears open to more interesting news for the months to come...

The truth is Lobsang Sangay cares about the money, he does not have respect for anyone, not even the people who voted him in. He tries to give people the impression that he is loyal to the Dalai Lama but he is not. He always does the opposite of what the Dalai Lama wants.

The Dalai Lama wants the middle way approach but the CTA and Lobsang Sangay are not taking the initiative to establish a better relationship with China. They are still talking about free Tibet and how China is inflicting pain and suffering to the Tibetans. They fail to see how much progress China has brought to Tibet since 1959.

There is no way the CTA or Lobsang Sangay will bow down to China, they are too arrogant. Besides, if China really accepts the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans, Lobsang Sangay and his gangs will lose their jobs! That is why Lobsang Sangay will make sure they don't go back to Tibet.

If Dalai Lama is back to Tibet, CTA would not get any more money from their donors.

Besides, China will not allow CTA to be in China too as why would China want to accept people who are known to be corrupted to be their citizen?

The CTA has time and time again betrayed the Tibetans, the Tibetan really need to wake up to this fact.

Lobsang Sangay is very sneaky to cancel the conference of Tibetan spiritual leaders, as he knows CTA's choice candidate to take over from the Dalai Lama, the 17th Karmapa will not return back for that meeting.

CTA is not doing the Tibetans any favours by putting the Karmapa as the next leader to replace the Dalai Lama , they are hoping the Karmapa can legitimize their authority over Tibetans in exile, and still provide a platform for them to siphon off more money from Western sponsors.

Lobsang Sangay cancelled the event for the 13th Religious Conference of the Schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the winner of this round seems only to be China, who is not a participant within the 13th Religious Conference. Without the conference, the future of who leads the Tibetan in exile spiritually is put into question as the conference cannot not be held and no timeframe when the next one will be held. For years I personally have felt Lobsang Sangay could even be double agent, as his action of cancelling this event benefitted China only, embarrassed the Dalai Lama and India all in one go..

Also in the article, questions are raised as to could the Indians actually capitulated to China's demands to stop the conference. As seen in much of the media these days, relations between China and India have thawed a lot in the recent months.

I am not at all surprised that there is a rift between the Dalai Lama and Lobsang Sangay.

1. Lobsang Sangay wants to be in control and yet try as he might he cannot escape living in the Dalai Lama's shadows. We know Sangay is a very corrupt, ambitious and political-minded person in the way he appoints his cronies instead of qualified people to key positions and we have seen how he dealt with Penpa Tsering and even changed election bylaws to disqualify Lukar Jam,

2. We know that Sangay is persona non grata to China and therefore is useless in any dialogue with China. Hence the Dalai Lama sent Samdhong Rinpoche instead when the Dalai Lama wanted to open dialogue with China earlier this year. Lobsang Sangay was sidelined. So Sangay is merely a token of the Dalai Lama's 'democracy' claim. Real power is still with the Dalai Lama and Sangay cannot be happy with that,

3. We have also seen how Sangay sabotages the Dalai Lama's efforts to reconcile with China. DS.com covered it in a story and here is an excerpt:

The Sabotage

A number of incidences bear testimony to this. For instance, in July 2017 amid a tense standoff between India and China, the President of the CTA Lobsang Sangay decided it was an opportune time to assert Tibetan independence, and to raise the Tibetan flag at Pangong Tso (Pangong Lake), which lies between India and China. Sangay’s taunt of China was all the more provocative given it was done within eyeshot of Tibet. That injudicious act infuriated China, a result at odds with India’s seeking of a peaceful solution to its border woes. To redress the injury, the Indian Foreign Secretary subsequently instructed all Indian government officials to refrain from participating in Tibetan events organized to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s exile in India. In essence, the CTA significantly diminished almost 60 years of goodwill the Dalai Lama had built with the CTA’s generous host.

More recently, the Dalai Lama’s efforts to close the gap between Dharamsala and Beijing with accord on spiritual matters has been brazenly thwarted by his own Tibetan government-in-exile. In April 2018, the Dalai Lama acknowledged that the China-enthroned Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu is in fact the “official Panchen Lama”, a statement that effectively endorses China’s legitimacy in recognizing and enthroning high lamas. This represents a complete reversal of the Tibetan leadership’s past stance, which asserted that Gyancain Norbu is merely a political stooge and a false incarnation of the popular 10th Panchen Lama. Given the importance of the Panchen Lama, deemed to be the highest-ranking Tibetan lama in China, the Dalai Lama’s acceptance of the Chinese Panchen Lama was clearly designed to thaw relations with Beijing and draw parties back to the negotiation table. The head of the CTA, Lobsang Sangay was with the Dalai Lama when his proclamation on Gyancain Norbu was made and so there cannot have been a miscommunication.

Nevertheless, just two days later, the CTA saw it fit to publish on its official website an article critical of the Chinese Panchen Lama and demanded the release of their authorized Panchen Lama candidate, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima whom they claim had been kidnapped by China in 1995. To ensure that their point was not lost, another two stories were published on the CTA website in May 2018, both critical of the Chinese Panchen Lama. In essence, these stories demolished whatever foundations of friendship the Dalai Lama was constructing with Beijing.

4. In the final analysis, the Dalai Lama and Sangay have different objectives now. The Dalai Lama clearly wishes to return to Tibet. This may be a personal desire or it may be the Dalai Lama realising that its better to finally bring peace to his people after decades of struggle. Sangay on the other hand will be reduced to nothing if the Tibetan people really do return to China. The CTA which is Sangay's 'empire' will have to be dismantled and its unlikely Sangay will have any real power in China-controlled Tibet. CTA in exile on the other hand makes Sangay somewhat of a celebrity and he exercises power without any accountability. Without an ongoing Tibetan struggle, Sangay is nothing but an assistant researcher in an American university. So why would he want for the Tibetan struggle to end?

The Tibetan leadership is splintered in so many ways with factions like Penpa Tsering's camp versus Sangay's camp. And now we are seeing another split. How is the Tibetan dream ever going to be accomplished?

Actually, what right does the Sikyong, Lobsang Sangay had to cancel the 13th Religious Conference of the Schools of Tibetan Buddhism, anyway? It is not even in his purview. This is religious matter and there is nothing religious at all in his qualifications nor does his position of "President" entails religious rights. Religious matters had always been under the role of the Dalai Lama. Never had the Dalai Lama infer that Sikyong has any rights to interfere. Hmm, very very daring of Sikyong. Cat away and mouse come out. More like a sewer rat. Tsks! Tsks! Yucks, sex predator just like Soygal Lakar! The Dalai Lama had promised to bring up the matter of sex offenders within Buddhism during his meeting with Soygal's victims. Now we know Sikyong has something to hide. Maybe he had been receiving funds from Sogyal and now prevents the issue being raised.... Hmmm! Naughty, naughty! No wonder he dares assault the American lady! Must be Sogyal's influence. Aw, poor Dhardon Sharling! Not good enough to keep him from straying. Ah well! That's the karma for separating your people with trump up allegations on authentic Dorje Shugden practice. More karma is coming.

Some say Lobsang Sangay wants the Dalai Lama to be back in Tibet, but I really doubt it. If the Dalai Lama is back to Tibet, Lobsang Sangay will lose his power and position in the CTA. Lobsang Sangay has to understand the person who really holds the commanding power is the Dalai Lama, not him.

Many sponsors donate to the Free Tibet movement because of Dalai Lama. Whose name and face do the activists use for their campaign? Lobsang Sangay or the Dalai Lama? Who is invited to go around the world to give talks to thousands and thousands of people? Lobsang Sangay or the Dalai Lama? So who can generate income? The answer is quite clear, it is the Dalai Lama!

What is in Lobsang Sangay’s mind? He does not get anything by going against the Dalai Lama, he is risking his own future. He can never replace the Dalai Lama. Without the Dalai Lama, the CTA or Lobsang Sangay will not be able to get so much financial support from the west. What game is Lobsang Sangay playing now?

It has been obvious that the President of the Tibetan leadership is not in sync with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and it is not only recently. When His Holiness the Dalai Lama announced that the approach that everyone should be working towards as the solution of Tibetan cause will be Umaylam. His Holiness can see that Rangzen is not possible anymore and the best solution will be autonomy within China.

As the President of the Tibetan Leadership, Mr Lobsang Sangay should be supporting His Holiness's decision and take action to make sure Umaylam succeeds. To request for autonomy within China, they need to get on China's good side and have a dialogue with them. However, Lobsang Sangay travelled across the globe attending Rangzen meetings and also raise awareness of China's human right situation wherever he goes.

How is that going to get on China's good books? He is confusing China because China is seeing two difference stance from the Tibetans. First, His Holiness wanted to get on the good side of China and secondly, the president of the Tibetan goes around the globe to talk bad about China. That is why we can see clearly that Lobsang Sangay is not supporting His Holiness and his wishes. He is delaying the return of Tibetans in exile to Tibet.

Lobsang Sangay does not really agree with the Dalai Lama even though he claims he respects the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama has said so many times he wants to go back to China but what has Lobsang Sangay done to fulfill the Dalai Lama's wish? Deep down inside, Lobsang Sangay has his own agenda.

The Dalai Lama must have known it as well that Lobsang Sangay is not in agreement with him. That was why the Dalai Lama secretly sent Samdhong Rinpoche to China. He knew Lobsang Sangay will not do anything to make sure he is back in Tibet.

Tibet has progressed so much under the Chinese ruling. Perhaps the Dalai Lama also sees that no one in the CTA is capable of bringing a better future for the Tibetans. Hence, it will be better to go back to Tibet. Besides, the Tibetans in exile are getting fewer, there is no point to maintain an administration office anymore.

Lobsang Sangay is a puppet running an administration that has only 75,000 people. He is not satisfied to have no real power and living under the shadow of the Dalai Lama. Unlike Sangay, Bob aka Robert Thurman would love the role to have all the money to spend without really needing to do anything. The expesive trips, fine dining and love affairs are very much the focus of Bob Thurman's life.

Lobsang Sangay is wishing daily that the Dalai Lama would pass sooner and he is very happy that the Dalai Lama has terminal prostate cancer. Otherwise, a useless coward like him would never dare to go against the Dalai Lama's will. Sangay thought since the Dalai Lama is sick, he can FINALLY hold real power. This is the real reason why he changed the constitution recently to make sure he is always the Sikyong.

2019 has arrived. I wish very much that we have more good news in the failing of the CTA!

I am not at all surprised that there is a rift between the Dalai Lama and Lobsang Sangay.

Lobsang Sangay is stupid to think he can finally take over the Dalai Lama and be the boss. People show support to the Tibetans in exile is because of the Dalai Lama, not because of Lobsang Sangay. Seriously, how many people know Lobsang Sangay is the president of the Tibetans in exile?

Even though the Dalai Lama has retired from the political role, many political heads still like to meet him. We don't really see them meeting Lobsang Sangay. Just face it, Lobsang Sangay can never be as big as the Dalai Lama.

Maybe Lobsang Sangay goes against the Dalai Lama on purpose, hoping that he would be sacked. If he is sacked by the Dalai Lama, he could cover his failure as the leader of the Tibetans. He could victimise himself by saying the Dalai Lama is still controlling the Tibetan administration and he could not execute what he thinks is right for the Tibetans.
