Title: a Canadian of Tibetan descent has Secured a Public Seat in Canada
Post by: michaela on June 11, 2018, 10:37:28 PM
This is yet another proof that without the harmful intervention of the Central Tibetan Administration, Tibetans can achieve a lot of things including securing a public office. This happy occasion will not happen for Ms. Buthila Karpoche is she continued to live under the claw of CTA and maintain her refugee status. Tibetans should move on and embrace their future.

Congratulation Ms. Karpoche and we hope you will have a successful term at Queen's Park.

*Tibet: First Tibetan Public Official Elected in North America*

Last week’s by-election in Canada saw Buthila Karpoche, a Tibetan-Canadian member of the New Democratic Party, securing a seat at Queen’s Park, thereby becoming the first member of the Tibetan community elected to public office in the Americas. Ms Karpoche, who moved to Canada from Nepal at the age of 18, is part of the 4,000 Tibetans living in the city of Toronto, one of the many communities of exiled nationals of this Asian country through which the Tibetan culture, history and way of life has been preserved.

The article blow was published by thestar.com

Bhutila Karpoche made history Thursday [7 June 2018] night, becoming the first Tibetan ever elected to public office in North America. The rookie NDP candidate won the Parkdale-High Park riding by a wide margin, securing nearly 60 per cent of the vote.

The crowd chanted “BHU-TI-LA! BHU-TI-LA!” as she entered her campaign's victory party at The Rhino on Queen St. W.

“I want to give a special shout out to the Tibetan community,” she said. “We made history tonight!”

After thanking her volunteers and supporters, Karpoche reflected on how her family was welcomed into Toronto's Little Tibet 15 years ago.

“Only in Parkdale-High Park could a Tibetan come to Canada, be embraced, loved and lifted to be the representative of this riding,” she said, before turning her attention to her role in opposition to Doug Ford’s government. “Tomorrow and onwards Parkdale High-Park will be ground zero in fighting Ford’s agenda here in Ontario.”

Parkdale-High Park has been in NDP hands since Cheri DiNovo won a by-election for the riding in 2006. DiNovo won three more terms before leaving politics earlier this year to become minister at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre for Faith, Justice and the Arts.

Before the election she told the Star she was “really, really happy to have passed the torch to Bhutila.”

Karpoche spent eight years working for DiNovo, first in her constituency office and more recently as her executive assistant at Queen’s Park. DiNovo had wanted to add a Tibetan speaker to her staff to better liaise with Parkdale’s large Tibetan population, so she asked organizers with Students For a Free Tibet if they knew anyone who might be interested. Karpoche arrived and quickly became indispensable, DiNovo said.

“She knows Queen’s Park and she’s way ahead of the game in terms of what I walked in there with.”

Karpoche, 34, moved to Toronto from Nepal when she was 18, settling into Parkdale, where she became a community organizer. She is fluent in four languages — English, Tibetan, Nepalese and Hindi — and is a PhD candidate at Ryerson University in public health policy.

Karpoche said the most important lesson she learned from DiNovo was how to advocate for constituents. “That’s your number-one job,” she said. “Regardless of who’s in power.”

DiNovo was highly regarded for her bipartisan and tripartisan efforts at Queen’s Park, where she passed the most private-member’s bills and three-party bills in Ontario’s history.

Also running were Liberal Nadia Guerrera, Adam Pham for the Progressive Conservatives, Halyna Zalucky for the Green Party of Ontario, and Matthias Nunno and Jay Watts for the Libertarian and Communist parties, respectively.

Thank you Michaela for sharing this!

It is such a deception of the Tibetan Leadership to make their people stay refugees! This is all only a power-game by those in power to receive funds...

When the Tibetans are allowed to move on with their life, they can accomplish so much and be of benefit to themselves and others. On the other hand, the CTA, Central Tibetan Administration in exile offers the career of selling sweaters on the street!

Well everyone knows now and should forget about the refugee-career which is a big downfall!

Given the opportunity, a Tibetan can be as successful as a person of any other ethnic background. For example, Jampa Rigzin from East of Lhasa signed with Boston Red Sox, that's something all Tibetans can be proud of. Unfortunately, the Central Tibetan Administration can claim no credit for this as he was from the Tibetan Autonomous Region and not India.

The culture in Dharamsala or any settlement is not good for a long-term future, that's why many are leaving. Many even dare to cross over into China, clandestinely from Nepal. Tibetans cannot own any property in India nor apply for government jobs, and there were many cases where potential employees were rejected because they were not Indian nationals.

This is a good read: https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/the-search-for-home-why-tibetans-are-leaving-india/story-fs6G56W52aPEjkFPbS5yYK.html (https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/the-search-for-home-why-tibetans-are-leaving-india/story-fs6G56W52aPEjkFPbS5yYK.html)

Tibetans are like any other nationality, they can achieve anything other types of people can also achieve.

So Tibetans do not need to stay under the CTA administration much longer, they can make their own choices to secure the future they wish to have.

The real question is she pro or anti Dorje Shugden?

I lived in Toronto for over 65 years and I know some of the Tibetans who live in Little Tlibet.

They are pro Dalai Lama and anti Dorje Shugden!!!

If your a Tibetan living in Toronto and pro Dorje Shugden you are treated by your fellow Tibetans as an outsider.

You can ask Lama Zasep Tulku a Dorje Shugden Tulku who has a centre here in Toronto.

Ms Karpoche would never had been elected by her people if she took a pro Dorje Shugden stance.

We may have a New Kadampa and Lama Zasep Tulku temple in Toronto but no Tibetan goes to either one.

Not if they want to be part of the Tibetan community here.

Life as a citizen of a country definitely is better than holding a Yellow Book. Look at this girl, she is Canadian, see how much opportunity she has? If she stays in India with her Yellow Book, what would she be doing now? Would she be able to get a position in the CTA and be a politician? I doubt it, you don't need the capability to get a position in the CTA, you only need to know someone.

The CTA is extremely selfish, they have taken away so many opportunities from the Tibetans, they give no future to their youth. When India offers the Tibetans the passport and citizenship, the CTA discourages the Tibetans from taking up the offer and also they do their best to stop the Tibetans from converting their citizenship. The only reason is so that the Tibetans stay as refugees and the CTA can continue to use them to get money from the west.

It is easy to see Tibetans who are living in India as refugees are not groomed to become successful in anything. Do you see any famous people in Tibetan community in India? In contrary, Tibetans who have become a citizen of another country have more opportunities in life and they are successful in their pursuit, in this case, Ms. Bhutila. There is no hope for Tibetans in-exile as long as the CTA is still running the government.

As you can see, Tibetans overseas are setting their roots in the new culture they are born in thanks to their parents who seek a better life than to rely on the CTA. It has been proven that Tibetans who decided to remain in Dharamsala as a refugee, remain a refugee, a beggar asking for money, blame the Chinese for their conditions and sell sweater in winter to earn a whole year income for the family.

Those who decided to rely on their own, to have a better life and prospects, they give their children a better future and make them a contributing factor to the world. Unfortunately, this also means that the Tibetan culture will no longer be preserved and practised, the language and Tibetan Buddhism knowledge will slowly be lost. It is a waste and a huge loss of humanity.

This is a result of the useless CTA and the incapability of their Sikyong Lobsang Sangay. Tibetan was lost to China almost 60 years ago but nothing has been achieved apart from the overwhelming financial aids from around the world that no one knows where they all went to. Nothing is going to change with the CTA, definitely not Lobsang Sangay. They need a lesson so badly that they need to serve the repercussions of their bad actions as an answer to the many hopeful people who have believed in them that the CTA and Lobsang Sangay have disappointed.

Dear RownTree -

The sad thing is the corrupt Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) wasted no time to capitalize on Ms. Bhutila Karpoche's success. I hope she can see through these people's motives and do what is right. I hope she will play a role too in helping the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet.

CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay congratulates Bhutila Karpoche on election victory

Dharamshala: The President of the Central Tibetan Administration Dr Lobsang Sangay congratulated Bhutila Karpoche on her stunning victory in the election for Legislative Assembly of Ontario, making her the first Tibetan to hold public office in North America. Candidate of the New Democrat Party (NDP) for Parkdale-High Park, she won the election with a commanding lead. The Ontario government (where conservative won) hosts the largest Tibetan community (Toronto) in Canada.

“We congratulate Bhutila Karpoche and wish her success. As a Tibetan it is a moment of great pride for all of us and hope that we will see more of such persons of Tibetan origin holding public offices in their respective countries. This is also a part of the vision of the Central Tibetan Administration.”

Prior to the election, Bhutila had worked for Cheri DiNovo, who was the MPP for Parkdale-High Park for 11 years, in her constituency office, and more recently as her executive assistant. She had also served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario and on the steering committee of the International Tibet Network.

The CTA does not want to work hard but always ride on others' success to make themselves look good. Don't they feel ashamed? None of the successful Tibetans are from the Tibetan in exile community and no Tibetan talent is interested to join CTA to help their own community.

The reason is very simple, CTA does not give people the confidence that they will work hard for their people or they are prepared to work hard to improve the living condition of their people. After so many scandals of the CTA are exposed, people know CTA is only after money and they don't care about their own people.

Can you believe CTA actually glorify self-immolation? They want the Tibetans to self-immolate to show their love and loyalty to the Dalai Lama and Tibet. This is so twisted. Only their lives worth something, but not the normal Tibetans' lives, how sad.
