Title: What do you like about Buddhism?
Post by: Big Uncle on August 25, 2011, 04:41:27 AM
Contrary to what most people like about Buddhism, I don't fancy Buddhism because of the peace and compassion it brings to others. I like Buddhism because it makes sense to me on many levels.

I don't complete understand everything there is in Buddhism as I am not a scholar, advance practitioner nor a Lama. But it has answered so many questions and the philosophy and mindset just clicks with me because of that. I also like Buddhism because it attacks the internal aspect - our mind.

What else do you like about Buddhism?

In the beginning what fascinated me about Buddhism is that it acknowledges and gave me the understanding of the supernatural existence of the inanimate. It fascinated me that a monk could give teachings in the forest to humans and non humans. My first Dharma book was of a famous Thai Monk and his memoirs or experiences. I was surprised that Buddhism acknowledges such things which has always been nonsense or rather something not be talked much about. Hence that was new to me and made me explore more about Buddhism.

Then I discovered that in Buddhism there is no such as a one God saviour and indirectly it is saying that you are your "God" or rather you are responsible for you. That opened up a whole lot of possibilities and a whole lot of acceptance of the situation that surrounds me.

But what I mostly like about Buddhism is the Vajrayana path where you have spiritual guide to actually help you realise who you really are or your potential a lot quicker... If only if one will allow it.

What I like about Buddhism is that it does not expect me to have blind faith and allows me to question the validity of the doctrine until I am convinced. Buddhist doctrine convinces me with its logical explanation that gives me no room to refute its validity.  It makes me accept its teaching based on logic and not out of threat or fear that if I do not adhere to it, I am doomed to hell.

Understanding the teachings gives me peace because it explains the truth of how things are in this suffering world of samsara and provide antidotes on how to deal with it.  It does not only tells us our problems but also gives us a method to solve our problems.

I agree with you WoselTenzin.

When I first came across Buddhism, it is the logic behind that strikes me. I guess it is human nature that nobody likes to be forced or pushed to follow a belief if it  is not proven correct or with logical explanation. Buddhism offers me this. And the other factor that I like about buddhism is that it teaches me not to be afraid to look into my real self, a self examination so I can become a "better" person.

Like WoselTenzin said, Buddhism also offers a set of methods to counter our weakness and problems. That is practical religion!

What I like about Buddhism is the logic of the teaching.
It give me room to apply to my life and I'm are able to examine it whether it changes me for good. Of course I have to make the first move to try it with a very rational view to look at the result.

I agree with what dsiluvu said,
"Then I discovered that in Buddhism there is no such as a one God saviour and indirectly it is saying that you are your "God" or rather you are responsible for you.

This is so practical. Everything that happened is for a reason. Nothing about others to be blame. It's just our own doing/action in our previous time. But that doesn't mean it determine our whole entire life at this time or future. They are room to improve by following the right teaching/path. It's all on our own decision for our better lives.

It's so make sense to me and so practical for the people at this current time.

What I like about Buddhism are:

1.   It explains the phenomena around us and on who we are
Buddhism explains the nature of our minds.

2.   It is the ultimate truth and universal law not created by anyone
No one including the Buddha or God created this truth and law.

3.   It is not based on blind faith
Buddhism even asks us to question and challenge its validity before adopting it.

4.    It is logical
Everything that we practise in Buddhism is with logic and meaning.  Each action is directed towards liberation and enlightenment to achieve the ultimate state of happiness.

5.    It is scientific
Science talks about Cause and Effect.  Buddhism gives us a deeper insight into the Law of Cause and Effect.  Quantum Physicists are beginning to accept some of the teachings as expounded by Buddha.

6.    It is flexible and systematic
There are 84000 methods to practise and each method is a unique way to solve our individual problem.  When we practise all these methods systematicaly, they will overcome all our sufferings and lead us to ultimate happiness.

7.    Its methods and teachings are proven
Buddhism is beyond time.  All the past Buddhas who had practised it had become fully enlightened.  Many present day masters or practitioners who had practised it had also gained enlightenment.  Buddhism will be relevant and applicable in the future too.

What draws me to Buddhism is that it is a study of the true nature of mind, my mind. Buddhism directs me to focus on understanding and truly knowing my mind,. Once i know that my mind is the creator of all my experiences, then I can work on it to 'shape' it to overcome all suffering ,problems and obstacles and to create a mind that directs itself towards peace and happiness.

THe Buddha, the awakened one, by his awakening to the truth and reality of mind( and all phenomena, including self), also showed us through a Path, how to gain this full awakening and understanding of the true nature of mind.  Thus, as many have walked this Path to full awakening(full enlightenment) and found their way, through mind , to true nirvana and peace, so can I and others.

What I like about Buddhism is that it is based on logic and not blind faith. It is logic because it explains the true nature of our minds.  It also teaches us on Karma - Cause and Effect and thus we are more mindful of our actions. There is no Creator or God. Everything happened for a reason ......it could be our Karma ripening..... and all sufferings are self inflicted. So it is within us to liberate ourselves from these sufferings by applying what the Buddha taught into our lives. Buddhism has the antidote to help us overcome our sufferings.

Understanding the dharma makes my mind more calm, makes me examine myself of how to be a better person and how to be of benefit to others. And I agree with what dsiluvu said:" But what I mostly like about Buddhism is the Vajrayana path where you have spiritual guide to actually help you realise who you really are or your potential a lot quicker... If only if one will allow it.". I am fortunate to have a spiritual guide who has help me with these.

When minds transformation happened, Buddhism shows MIRACLE.... (miracle in the sense of logics)

I like Buddhism for its universal messages which everyone can apply and benefit. How much depend on one’s efforts and motivation. So that’s another thing I like, its doctrine is fair based on personal responsibility and free will.
It is a religion which is not rooted in dogma. It can move with the times since its essence is to understand and train ones mind . Hence its methods are timeless but the explanations, external forms etc can be updated to suit modernity. It is logical and goes very well with science. That makes it easy for modern people  to accept Buddhism . Even if one is not a Buddhist, if one follows its wise instructions, one can still get the same result.

Buddhism makes sense. It is not fanatical but logical. Buddhism is human and adapts with life...especially the samsaric life we all have. Buddhism is applicable and flexible. I love Buddhism because it makes you think and it is logical, it makes me change for the better. Buddhism is intelligent.

Buddhism makes me a better person. And for this alone I love Buddhism.

What appeals most to me in Buddhism -
one is responsible for one's situations, one reaps what one sows and most of all one can control the results by creating the corresponding  causes.
There is no  mighty divine power that dictates how one's life should be. You don't just pray for miracles, you create the causes for the results you want.

It's an interactive religion because it teaches you how to reach the different types of happiness depending on your aspirations.

I like Buddhism because it is logical and addresses daily challenges with practical solutions. Buddhism answers most of my questions. It is not about superstition and some far fetched concept of universal love. When I practise what I learned from Buddhism, I can experience positive results. I'm happier and more at peace with myself.

I like Buddhism because :

1) it's logical, everything is explainable.

2) teach us everything is control of our hands, we have total control of our own fate, total freedom
The law of cause and effect told us : we will not experience what we have never done before. If we do not want certain thing to happen in the future, we better stop it now, it's logic. Ex: If one would like to have slim body, he/she should watch out his diet, what you give is what you get.

3) it's not a religion label, but a way of life, a teaching that we can apply on our daily life
we able to learn the basic moral in our life from Buddhism teaching and apply to the way we communicate with other people

4) it's very acceptance, regardless gender, age, race, it apply to all
all sentient being are suffering regardless male, female, transgenders, human, animal or spirit that we can't see. Buddhism will not judge but accept and share the teaching

5) have many layers to teaching to teach suits different people needs
logical teaching apply to everyone, no matter what's your background is

6) it's change with time, never got outdated
it's not a ancient text that we need to follow 100% and no other choice, but it's mixture of all 84000 and we mix and match to suit among ourselves

thanks

What i like about Buddhism is that it is so logical and most important it teaching can apply to any situation, any period/century we are in. It is so complete that it covers every part of our life just that we do not have the wisdom to understand everything.

It promise us if we follow what the Buddha had taught : Dharma, we can gain full liberation and no suffering and it is UP TO US, not depends on others or outer factor. Buddha taught us what is Karma and once we understand and ACCEPT Karma, we can create the future we want. This is very expiring as it means we will not "stuck" in the same bad situation if we ourselves do something about it.

That's what i like about Buddhism.

What do I like about Buddhism?

To me, before I knew much and practiced, Buddhism to me was a way of life, a philosophical set of rules to help us get by life. I didn't label it as a religion per se.

But to me now, Buddhism is a religion, becuase it increases your faith, and pushes you to be a better person, as does all other religions. It encourages you to make peace, harmony, be loving and kind. What I like about Buddhism is that it gives you a set of advices that is extremely logical in helping you solve the problems in your life. It makes you understand why these problems have arosed and how and what you have to do to deal with it, to understand it.

What I like about Buddhism is that it explains so clearly the laws of cause and effect, that you have to reap what you sow. That no one escapes Karma, whether you believe it or not, for the universal truth of causality, that your actions will result in a consequence makes so much sense. Also, I like how Buddhism is focused on compassion and wisdom - two very basic but extremely vital methods to you leading a life of happiness.

What I like is that you have a way out - your ultimate goal is liiberation, to get out of the cyclic existence of suffering. There is a way out - you just have to follow the footsteps of one who has achieved it.

Proven by the historical Buddha and the other and following Buddhas.

Buddhism encompasses everything we do, to the point that we can control our own suffering, and if we are really focused help change the sufferings of those around us.

Before Buddhism I would do things that make me happy, that I thought brought me happiness. I chased goals that I thought the outcome would satisfy me right through to my death, after Buddhism it became empty.

The more I read and studied the bio's of masters of the past, the stories of the mahasiddahas, and now the history behind Dorje Shudgen do I feel something changing, shifting.

I don't know what it is but I know it's good, something no other "religion" has brought me.

Onward with the path.

I have always thought Buddhism is not a religion but the way to live our lives. Buddhism tells us it is our choice to be who we want to be, no one can decide for us and no one can take whatever sufferings we have away. We are our greatest saviour and we are also our biggest enemy.

Buddhism has answered a lot of my questions regarding our human existence and the meaning of life. I like to read all types of books from different schools of Buddhism. Like dsiluvu, from my reading of Theravadan literature, I learned that arhats can see beings from other realms and teach them dharma! I'm fascinated by such stories.

But I really like Buddhism because it teaches the truth. The Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths. This is the basis of all Buddhist paths. If we understand the teachings and practice well, we will gain realisations.

I will echo world renowned scientist Albert Einstein who declared that although he does not belong to any religion,  if he has to embrace one it would be Buddhism BECAUSE IT WORKS !

Never in the history of Buddhism was a major war fought in its name. We are talking about  a track record of 2,600 years of history, so it has weight. My Guru said that the acid test to validate something or someone's character is through the test of time. Even scientific discoveries fail when subjected to much less time than this.
Eg.  When a brilliant scientist proclaimed the world was flat, and scared the hell out of sea farers, it was debunked rather quickly; when Dalton declared he had discovered the smallest indivisible particle in the universe , it shook the buddhist world for while until destroyer Dalton cut it in half and scientists continue to do so until today.
Frankly, its the scientists ego at work here hoping Buddha is wrong and they won't have to keep splitting things they can't even see. They will not succeed not because they are stupid. They have not realized the truth like Buddha did.

I like Buddhism because I feel that it is simple, easy and logical. I’m not a scholar in Buddhism nor I have a lot of knowledge. It does not lead me to blind faith.

Buddhism also help me to understand that things always happen for a reason and also problems that we have is self created.

Buddhism is applicable in ANY situation and it helps in ALL situation, that's why I like it and I would like to share with most of the people around me.

I was a free thinker before, without any enlightening thinking, there's always no firm and convincing answers for question like what is life about? Why earning money is the way to happiness? If I have happiness from money and material thing, why i still feel disappointed all the time? Buddhism answer all that and the knowledge grab my life to a steady ground, which I know where am i heading to.

What I like about Buddhism is that:

1. It is based on a experiential factor which encompasses, thought, action and feeling.
2. It is an individual spiritual path which is different from other "organized religions" which are based on instilling fear and detract from the beauty of their respective original "teachings".
3. It is something very direct, tangible and logical.
4. It teaches us to be responsible for our own actions (karma) and not blame the mystical or "fate".

I am told that Enlightenment exists and there are many who have achieved it.

I am also told that God's heaven (as in the christian faith) exists as a final place of rest, a place without sorrow and all is well there.

I have no self realizations that either one really exists.

However, why I like Buddhism is it's practical, logical and applicable on a daily basis. I cannot change the world I live in, the people and situations which disappoints to the point of breaking ones spirit. Without Buddhism, I'd still be in depression.

I was an atheist but now im a Buddhist.
Everything changed after i met my Lama. He showed me the Buddhism is something very logical. And I found all the answers which i've been searching for since I was 19. The anwsers i get from the Buddha's teaching never contradict with my lifestyle or the 'nature' of people lives. Buddhism is cater for people in any era, regardless your skin colour or culture. Buddha's teachings answer me about death, teach me about impermanence and compassion and even redefine my life.

These are what I like about Buddhism.  :)

I don't like like Buddhism.... I LOVE BUDDHISM! When I was young, I used to have so many unanswered questions about Buddhism but I couldn't ask anyone I know because they don't know as well. Dharma books in the country where I live were scarce and I had language problems with some of the Dharma books. When I met my root Guru, I was totally blown away by His teachings. He opened up a WHOLE NEW world to an idiot(me)! I knew on the spot that my questions will be answered. It's the logic and happiness that my Guru and Dharma brought me. I never knew life was so beautiful and so much less complicated when I practice what Buddha taught! May I NEVER EVER be separated from the TRUTH in all lives!

Most of us have exposure to religion from very young age and then we make our choice. I went to a christian school, (was very good at Bible knowledge studies), lived with a family that practises Buddhism and had many muslim and hindu friends.  Although we never discussed religion, I have observed their behaviour and the ones who are Buddhists seem to have the least restrictions in the way they led their lives.

So I go around saying I am Buddhist, without really know what is Pure Buddhism.  Until later I had the good fortune to met with Pure Buddhism and boy, I liked the way Buddhism turns all my fixed beliefs upside down.  It was a challenge for me to look at my life experiences in a whole new manner and how "things" could have been better for me and for those around me.

The learning path had not been easy but the beauty of Buddhism is that there are logical and very clever answers to the demonic ways of my thoughts and I choose to follow the path of such cleverness in the Dharma.

Now I proudly call myself a Buddhist and I hope that with time I can claim that I am a good practising Buddhist along the path of Buddhism to liberation of my mind. I love Buddhism.

Buddhism is very logical and everything has an explanation to it. The monks in the great monastery would debate on the theories until it becomes a truth. A truth cannot be wronged. That's how they learn in the monastery.

Buddhism doesn't have a creator like Christianity. Therefore, our fate is in our own hands. Where we end up is based on the actions we do. That's karma. And Karma will follow us wherever we go. We cannot escape! By understanding Karma, we will be more mindful in our actions and will not make any negative actions to receive negative karma. That will eventually lead to a better world.

That's what i like about Buddhism.

Well... what i like about Buddhism? A lot!

First of all, i like how logical it the teachings are. Somehow, after contemplating you'll understand why the Dharma says so and so.

Secondly, I believe in karma and reincarnation... although there are other religions that believe in it, Buddhist teachings has given me the clearest explanation I needed.

Third... I don't believe any entity can save me from all the crap karma I've collected... I believe in taking responsibility

Gosh! there's so many more!... But these are the top 3 reasons in my list  ;D

I like a Buddhism because it's realistic and offers a realistic view of life and of the world. It does not entice people into living in a fools paradise, nor does it frighten and agonize people with all kinds of imaginary fears and guilt feelings.Buddhism tells us exactly and objectively what we are and what the world around us is and shows us the way to perfect freedom, peace, tranquility and happiness.
Buddhism points out the futility of the worldly life and show the correct and practical path that Buddha discovered. It illuminate the way for mankind to cross from a world of darkness, hatred and suffering to an new world of light, love and happiness.

In my view, buddhism is the only religion that makes sense, and that I can follow. Not to be disrespectful of other religions but some religions have rules and regulations that have to be followed before you can be considered in that religion. There is then guidelines of what is wrong, what is right. And if you do the wrong thing you go to hell, do the right thing and you will be rewarded. But watch out he is always watching you!

Buddhism can be challenged, it can be debated, and this is part of the religion. This way it is common sense and lets you use sense in your life. More often that not, you will find that a buddhist quote or statement cannot be proved wrong, it just makes sense. It takes in the law of karma, something which again makes complete sense. You do something good, you will receive good. Do something bad and bad will happen to you. What is there not to understand about that? Buddhism factors in rebirth, something that has not been proven by science yet, but there are so many reports of rebirths, people remembering their past lives, and also lets not forget high masters who can take rebirth as and when they want.

Buddhism can be adopted into any life, it teaches the fundamental principalities of being alive. It teaches compassion. It teaches why we suffer, how not to suffer, and if you follow the religion properly you feel, and see results. Compassion for me is key, why use our lives only for ourselves, isn't it so much more meaningful to help others.

I can go on and on, but I will end there. I can talk for hours on why buddhism works for me. It may not work for you, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But be open to new ideas, why be closed, after all how many times have you not wanted to hear/believe something, and then find out it helps you so much or is the absolute truth. Give buddhism a chance if you aren't one. There are no initiations, no ceremonies, just a change of state in mind frame.

There are many answer to this particular question, for me Buddhism gives me a sense of making sense and logical. Don't mean to offend other religion. Buddhism is consider ' A Way Of Life' as well to many. We can adapt those teachings from all the Masters and Buddhas too in our daily routines. We do something good we will collect some good karma in another words if we do something bad, the bad karma will happen eventually in another form or time. Buddhism really required a lot of learning, understand and practices and it is just the way of life (A Reality)

Even Prince Sidhartta cannot escapes the path of learning before he became a Buddha.

What I like about Buddhism is the very fact that our fate and destiny are in our hands. WE are in control of our lives whether it's good or bad and not by some almighty powerful God who determines our course of life. The logic of cause and effect (karma) means every single person is responsible for their own actions and consequences.

When we take refuge in karma, we will stop blaming others and take responsibilities of our own actions, make a change in our attitudes (body, speech and mind), learn from past mistakes, accept, forgive, let go. In other words, if everybody practices real Buddhism, everyone will refrain from harming one another. There will be peace in the world.

what I like about Buddhism is everything is logical and can be explained, and also that it teaches us on how to gain control of our lives and make it more meaningful and enriching it with more than superficial entertainment and distractions. It is a set of instructions or a method on how to make our lives more than what it appears to be.

Other religions tend to explain their God as something that cannot be perceived but a Buddha can be perceived directly if we work hard…and it is not something that cannot be explained or that they work in mysterious ways. They do not and it can be explained with enough reasoning and logic.

Buddhism also covers on a lot of topics and also provides a very complete overview of things which gives us a clear picture on what to base our decisions on and it gives us the power and knowledge to change our lives into the direction we choose to mould it to.

In addition to my previous answer, I was thinking, and in short:

Buddhism is not blind faith, it is logical, things can be questioned, it has a lineage, there are living practitioners who are examples of what the practice can do.

My opinion is based on my own surroundings and personal experience of being a buddhist. I love how it reaches to a variety of people that does not judge their gender, race or financial status. Buddhism excepts people for who they choose to be and opens up choices for people who are different. From being rich to being transexual, I love how buddhism excepts us all as equals. It's teachings makes sense, it helps align my perspectives. Some other religions think it's sinful to alter their religion but the truth is that this world is getting more modern as it is and are unwilling to involve in something that they have to seek of unless it's mainstream. This is where buddhism gets really cool, my guru finds ways to approach his students by bringing out a new age methods by using music, social networks, art, gifts and much more to attract the eyes of people like us. It brings peace and does not discriminate who we really are. It brings the best out of everyone and enhances the compassion in you. What more can I ask for? :D I'm a happy child.

For me, coming into Buddhism or rather being introduced to it was the most liberating gift i ever received. No hard and fast rules . Dont need to worry about the other trappings like rituals and animal sacrifices! You don’t see Buddhists blowing themselves up, adulating martyrdom, embarking on bloody crusades, condemning and judging those who are different or don’t believe. Evangelising is fairly tame although does happen, which is far and few. So for me it is a healthier package than many others.

Like many religions, or religious philosophies, you can find good points in it as well as some points that can be debated (depending on how one interprets it). However, the good points are far more easily found in secular philosophies and in our daily lives; cultivating mindfulness, being mindful of living in an interdependent world, being mindful of our actions, etc.  If we direct our mind in a positive direction, we can transform whatever action we do into the path to enlightenment. In this way, the Dharma becomes part of our life in an organic way. Getting up in the morning is Dharma, eating and going to work is Dharma, sleeping is Dharma. By transforming our attitude in the midst of daily activities, our life becomes very meaningful. It is practical, logical and I love it. Well, it works for me and I hope for you too!

Buddhism is life philosophy.
I like about buddhism is that no one ever tells you that you have to believe this or that.
The Buddha Himself said that you have to test these things out for yourself, and if they are true to you, then use them.
Through practicing sincerely, buddhism shows a real impact in my life and it also open to new understanding from day to day, personally, buddhism teaches me to think OUT OF OUR BOX, once we abandon the thought of what you can and can’t do, it open up many nrew possibilitiies

In life, as a buddhist, I learn to face to Challenge ideas about how things should work. Sometimes when you decide how things should be you limit your ability to be effective in the world as it actually is.

i like Buddhism because it make sense. The teaching is very logic where we can find the answer. The teaching of Karma is very powerful in term of cause and result..

The teaching is guide and lead people to do in good action, harmony, caring, not harm other etc which is basic to be in social.

i think if everyone is follow Buddhism principle, our world will only have harmony and peaceful.

I like Buddhism because it is so logical and it make sense. It applies to every part of our daily activities and life whether we want to believe them or not.  Buddhism itself is not a religion but it is a way of life to rehabituate our negativities into positivities and hence becoming a better person.  It teaches us on how to gain control of our lives and live purposefully.

The law of cause and effect (karma) is something one should take refuge in and not dismiss it.  It is so logical and make sense.  How we want our life to be depends solely in our own hands.  Not the Buddhas or Gurus nor our parents and friends can help to take them away or dissolves them.  They are like shadow to us..it follows us wherever we go even to our future lives.   How else would I want to be?

I like Buddhism because it is not just a religion, it is our way of life. It teaches us to be absolutely selfless and the very motivation of our practise is to eventually able to help others.

Also the theory of all sentient beings being equal on all grounds. Whatever we are suffering or enjoying now is the result of our past doings, no one else (not even the gods!!!!) are responsible for our fate. It's all in the palm of our hands!  And we are able to a change our future and our fate! Isn't this beautiful?

What I like about Buddhism is basically the Karma theory. Based on the Karma Theory, I am in such situation because of my karma and my previous actions, and as such, I am responsible for what had happened. As opposed to the god theory, where I am here because of god's decision.

Also, in this era, most of us cannot accept things with just faith without explanation. I dare not say the entire Buddhism can be explained, but it is a lot more than the god theory (where most will require faith in the god without much explanation).

Also, the whole point of accepting the Karma theory is that we take things into our hands, and we can decide our future. I like the Karma theory where we go after death will depend on what I do today, instead of, where I go depends on whether I believe in some god or not.

What i like about Buddhism is if you want to gain something out of it, you better make sure you work hard on it. One has to work hard in life if we wanted to have some kind of achievement in our secular world and Buddhism is very much the same, and if we work hard and practice it properly we can even be enlighten. Everyone has the chance to gain enlightenment but it is all depends on how much effort do we put on it. Also it depends on our previous karma. It's an act of nature or what we called 'Karma' or cause and effect. It is so logical, not even Buddha Shakyamuni Himself be able to escape the cause of suffering before He gained enlightenment. And another aspect of Buddhism which i like is we practice to look into ourselves and learn moulding our mind to let go of our negative behaviour such as: laziness, selfishness, egoistic, anger and so on. I think we will become a better person and happier if we able to do.

And to add on on this, many of us seems to be like enjoying our lives, without knowing with this ‘enjoyment’, we actually create more attachment with what we have and brings more suffering for ourselves in the future, life is so impermanent, anything can just happen anytime, when we are in our ‘good’ life that time, we even have to practice more on spiritual, because we don’t know when the bad one will come, and with spiritual, at least we can still divert the cause of suffering and advance further in our spiritual practice.

What I like about Buddhism is that:

1. It is based on a experiential factor which encompasses, thought, action and feeling.
- Based on a self analyzing aspect... going in depth about the way we think, the way we act and in turn the way we feel. Whereby outside influences are filtered out in order for us to truly examine the inner workings of our mind.

2. It is an individual spiritual path which is different from other "organized religions" which are based on instilling fear and detract from the beauty of their respective original "teachings".
- We make our own glory or create our own "downfall". There is no "higher being" that rewards or punishes us. And we are not pushed into a "herd mentality" whereby one method has to suit all.

3. It is something very direct, tangible and logical.
The teachings are factual, logical and backed up with centuries old lineages.

4. It teaches us to be responsible for our own actions (karma) and not blame the mystical or "fate".
- Based on the fact that we are responsible for our own thoughts, our own actions and our own feelings. We are purely accountable for our path and practice.

I like Buddhism because
1) it is not just a religion, it is psychology, medicine, philosophy, science, universe.
2) it is very logical, karma is a universal law, it will not change because time has change.
3) it is a religion that talks about respect a lot.
4) it does not discriminate people, you don't have to be straight or 'normal' to be a buddhist.

I like Buddhism because....

1. Makes me think deeper. Like why on earth are there so much suffering in this world and why is it some suffer more and some less - Laws of Karma answered that one.

2. Gives me a solution and it can be applied directly, immediately, daily. Because for every problem we have, there is a solution, an antidote for that problem. It is our choice to take it and use or not.

3. Empowers me to believe in possibilities. Because Buddha said everyone is born with a Buddha nature and it is possible for you to change your destiny. No other religion says that as far as I know. No other religion gives you that possibility and the sky truly is the limit! There is always a choice, and you make it and your accountable for it!

4. Allows you to question and debate. In Buddhism it is actually healthy to think, check, ask questions when in doubt or unsure. In other religions... you are not, but to believe and just have faith. This stopped working for me when you see people you love pass away without warning and at the time they should not - supposedly.

There are many more reasons but these are the main ones that triggered me to accept Buddhism. I may not got it all right but at least I got on the road.

I like Buddhism because,

1) It makes a lot of sense to me. The teachings are very logical and mainly depends on reason and doesn't simply ask one to have blind faith.

2) It teaches me to be mindful, and sensitive to everything that's happening around me. And that we ourselves create the causes for what we experience, so every time we identify and reduce our negative thoughts and actions we become better.

3) It show me that we are in control of our own lives and we have the ability to change our lives. By choosing to change, anyone can start immediately to make their situation better. Because it is all in our mind how we view things as negative or positive.

Most importantly, Buddhism always stress the importance of respecting and existing in harmony with other religions.

Not only that Buddhism is logical and the way of life as many understood, Buddhism is also an all encompassing teaching of the Buddha whom has realised all things are achievable by all beings if we believe 100% on rebirth and karma.  How we want to be is just by the mere of our thoughts and our choice on how we want it to be, successful or failure.

Likewise, the fundamental teachings of gratitude, integrity, honesty, care, kindness, etc...is lacking in many societies and cultures.  We need to unlearn and learn - perfect and ingrained all of these (to name few qualities) into our mind stream.  Even if these basic requirement are not there what are we talking about peace and harmony and to benefit others when we don't even understand what is responsibility towards one's life.  Let alone universal responsibility.

One of the reason that I like Buddhism is - nothing is perfect and we should not perceive and grasp all things the way we think it should be and it changes every time.

Buddhism appears to me as teachings passed down since the time of Buddha Syakamuni. Personally I am attracted to Buddhism due to its reasonable nature that encourages practitioners to question the teachings and find out the answer, not just plain beliefs.

Buddhism pushes me out of my comfort zone to achieve more in both spiritual and secular life. Before knowing the Dharma, I set limitations to myself as to what I am capable of doing and to my surprise, looking back from now, some of my actions perceeds my expectations.

Buddhism teaches me ways to deal with the different experiences in life be it good or bad. The result is equanimity - a calm state of mind that accepts things the way they are and not judgemental. This assists me in controlling my emotions, specifically anger.

Also in general, Buddhism promotes world peace and religious harmony, something I have strongly believed in. It emphasizes on respect and non-discrimination towards other religions, something uncommon in this degenerate age.

What I really like about Buddhism is that it is very logical and it leads us out of this place we are deluded in. As much as I still can't understand the entirety of Buddhism, I dare say there is an answer to every question. In fact, logic should be the fundamental of all religions. Why? Simply because it is easier to convince a person with logic than with mystics.

All religions wishes for a person to improve, to be a better person, though at different levels. But the fundamental basis of all religions is compassion. Which is good..but not enough.

Buddhism goes beyond just logic. With logic, we gain a vast knowledge and understanding of our human lives and beyond (6 realms). With that understanding, we realize there is a problem, we are all suffering and will continue to suffer. But by studying the Dharma further, we also realize there is a way out!

The magic about Buddhism is that it is very direct. It shows us the problems and let us know there is a solution to it. But of course we have to work for it. This is where the logic kicks in again, we cannot expect the Buddhas to clear all our problems for us instantly. Never in life have we ever had our problems vanish just like that. When facing a problem, we work hard to come out with solutions and work through the obstacles, finally succeeding to overcome the problem. Same for Buddhism, we have to work for it. The ultimate goal in Buddhism is to achieve eternal happiness. So like how we tackle our worldly problems, we should also work hard to tackle the obstacles we face in achieving eternal happiness. The only difference is these obstacles are within us. Oh wait, there is another difference, the end result in achieving eternal happiness is much more satisfying and worthy than our worldly pursuits.

Another logic, the reason why we have Gurus here to guide us. Well, if I say there is a Buddha in front of you, would you believe? No right? But if I say there is a person in front of you who have studied the teachings of Buddha which was left behind since thousands years ago, that's easier to comprehend isn't it? In the Lamrim it is said that our Guru is the Doctor, the Dharma/teaching is the medicine and we are the sick patients. Very logical isn't it?

So yes, I like Buddhism because it is VERY LOGICAL.

I have read through most of the comments here and i agree with almost all the views. What I want to add is I like Buddhism because:

1. It teaches that the quality of our heart is more important than any super normal powers we might have like our ability to foretell the future, the strength of our faith or any extravagant gestures we might make. Its emphasis is on 'heart qualities', ethics and good behaviour. It teaches that we should try to develop our intellectual ability to the fullest and teaches us to develop love and kindness so that we can be a true friend to ourselves and others. This is supreme philosophy!

2. Buddhism has always been a gentle way of life and the idea of using force or pressure to induce belief is repugnant to Buddhists. It does not try to impose on anyone. I have not heard of any missionary Buddhist monks trying to convert anyone into Buddhism and impose their will on another person. Instead they share their knowledge and then leave it to the other person to decide if he/she 'accepts' Buddhism.  I find this very refreshing coming from a family background of a different faith.
