Buddha himself explained past lives where he was a bodhisattva. These people debating his actins ought to just meditate and gain deep realizatiins of the path they have affinity with and stop nonsensical dialogue.

I agree that we should just practise and meditate and then we will not be questioning the Buddha. 

The Buddha is perfection and it is us who do not have the realisation to know so.
